Excellent work. I think you are the first guy who found the root cause of the problem. And yes, drilling a "heat relief" hole is a great idea. I have one other suggestion to add: Using spray adhesive and tin foil to line the inside of the reflector. The tin foil dissipates the heat very well, and cannot burn off.
Thank you SO much Sir!!! I was afraid since GM was charging more for this that there was a LOT more to it that replacing the assembly. Going to order the ones for the wife today. The wife was complaining last week that the sun will be coming up later very soon and she didn’t like riding with the brights on. This truly has helped me out!!
Thanks for posting. I just bought a 2010SRX a couple of months ago and ordered new bulbs for this exact problem. Now I know to send those back and save up for the entire assembly.
This video was SO helpful At first, my husband thought I was imagining things. Right now, I have to drive with my bright lights on. Wish I knew someone who could replace the headlight assemblies. I doubt any commercial auto repair place would do this if I bought the assemblies on Amazon. :(
Thank you very much. Just bought a 2010 srx4 from auction. Asking everyone for a week - headlights, headlights, that's all I heard, but I'd replaced them already. You answered in 15 min flat..... Minus the lunch 😂
Really appreciate you making this video and explaining in detail. Our SRX's right headlight just died and I thought It would be easy to change it but I guess not.
Thanks so much! My headlights have been annoying me since 2011! Your the best! I drive with my high beams on and get them replaced often and have complained and looked up complaints but this explanation is the best ever!! 😘
Thank you. I am having this problem on my 2014 SRX. Changed the bulbs, not fixed. Looking at getting new assemblies, but now I am also going to the dealer for reimbursement.
Thank you for this informative video. My 2016 is so bad I’m afraid to drive at night. People get angry if I use my high beams. I’m a widow and just didn’t have a clue as to what the fix could be. Shame on the dealer who sold it to me without divulging this defect.
It's not just GM. My Toyota solara has the same problem. I'm buying aftermarket light fixtures which are like 180 bucks apiece. Upgrading the bulbs for cooler LEDs.... when I can afford it. Right now I have to drive with highbeams on!😡
I got denied because I only had an invoice and not a receipt. Kinda thought it was the same. I installed the LEDs and the brights are awesome but the dim is no more than a running light or fog light. I'm going to replace the housing after seeing what you discovered. I don't have fog lights on mine but does anyone use their fog lights with the not so good dims? Just curious if it makes a difference?
I got I got the same ones that you got. One question did you have to adjust the bulbs or the lens because I had to take it to the dealership because the Dim were shining too low pointed to low.
Last year GM did a recall on the SRX headlight assembly, I have a 2014 Cadillac SRX and called my local Cadillac dealer they got my car in now my headlights work great, two hours and no charge.
Bought SRX 9/2020 to replace my car from an accident. Fast forward, over the last months I noticed my headlights were dim. Yesterday told by dealership about head light assembly malfunction that GM is aware of. Quoted me $1572 to fix. Cant right now and wont be driving at night. Reached out to Cadillac no response yet. First Cadillac and last. GM needs to make this right.
This is CRAZY! My friend was in my car yesterday and swore the lights were off. I said - no they're not. Looking forward to daylight savings time ... spring forward.
You don't have to remove the bumper to replace just the bulbs. You do have to remove the top and side screws on the bumper to replace the headlight assembly.
I bought some Amazon headlights for my chevy s10 it's a 96, I got what I think were originally for a semi truck but the shape and size were a match for my stock ones so I got em. Insanely bright lights, so bright that semi trucks would literally stop infront of me on the highway if I got behind them. 😑 happened 3 times in one week.
On my 2006 SRX I found that thoroughly cleaning the inside of the reflector socket with chemical parts cleaner and then with alcohol and finally applying 2 very thin coats of mirror finish paint (Rust-Oleum Mirror Effect #267727) and 2 new HID bulbs solved the problem. That was 2 years ago, and they are still working fine!
@@MrRv8pilot No. Just place it in small container with something like Purple Stuff cleaner for a few minutes. Flush it in clean water until ALL cleaner residue is gone. Dip or spray with Alcohol and blow dry with warm to hot air until completely dry. Hang part with wire or cord and apply VERY LIGHT 1st coat of mirror paint. All you want to do is to provide a good surface for 2nd coat. Apply 2nd coat of mirror paint being carefully NOT to overstay. Take your time and give at least 30 seconds between each pass of spray coating. If done right, an almost mirror like surface will show! Then reassemble unit and mount it back on vehicle. Light coats will prevent paint from bubbling when bulbs heat the plastic housing. Good luck!
I added the after market fog lights to improve the vision. Should be a recall since it's so dangerous. The interior delaminates from the plastic because of the heat of the halogens.
Thank you so much for this very helpful video. I can't find the name of the aftermarket headlight assembly you bought from Amazon. Can you please let me know.

I just bought used a 2014 kia Sorento LX and have the same issue, low beams are too dim, even after replacing bulbs. Ive learned it may be the chrome inside the housing has melted away. On amazon i see some that look like chrome inside and others that look dark so I'm hesitant to buy them. Also need to change to LED,less heat.
Buy aftermarket headlamps, I got so frustrated they didn't do anything to address this I ended up buying a pair from eBay, they look cool and they got LED DRLS which looks awesome, and get the Sylvania ZXEs, they're very bright and kinda look like HIDs.
Don, do you have the contact information of where to submit for reimbursement of repair costs? We have reported to NHTSA and looked to see if there was a recall but our VIN # didn't pull any recalls. Thank you
Voltage on the rh side of most gms run higher than lh. Both rh and lh reflectors would be produced at the same time under same process by gm supplier. My guess is true failure is not enough metallization and lack of in process top coaton on reflector to begin with, burnt completely off when HID was installed. all the plastic is high heat polycarbonate . the missing metallization on the back of the reflector allows for heat to escape .
My 2012 SRX Has this problem and just got the middle finger from the Service Dept at Sunset Cadillac in Sarasota Florida. What do I do now? Replace both head lights?😵💫
Bad customer service is a business decision! The good news is that these headlight assemblies are reasonably priced on amazon and not that difficult to change. I installed the ACANII brand on my wife’s SRX when ever I did that video and she still happy
Yes, you have to replace both headlight assemblies. After watching this video, I now know for a fact I am going to do this job on my MIL’s 2015 SRX. She drives with the brights on at night because the low beams have become so dim.
So it looks like the best fix is to replace the headlight assembly and install LED bulbs. They run a lot cooler and should slow down the deterioration of the reflective material.
Correct, I put halogen bulbs in my new after market assemblies because that’s what I had on hand. But after doing this postmortem video I believe you are correct LED’s would be best.
@@joeganns2510 I believe you can buy LED that at direct replacement for the halogen bulbs but if the reflective material is burnt off your headlight assembly reflector the LED’s will be worthless.
Thanks. Same problem on my kid’s Camry. The projector mirror surface had the exact same issue. Failing for whatever reason. Thanks for the video, maybe add some tags for #headlight #projector #mirror #dim #onedimmer so others can stumble on it!
Hey Don, If the new assemblies fail on you I recommend getting ahold of the retrofit source. The are a us based supplier of aftermarket projectors and the quality difference is night and day compared to the OEM. I have a friend with a 17 Duramax and he changed to a Morimoto set from there. I would be willing to bet the output is at least double the factory with a ton more light brightening up the ditches.
@@MrRv8pilot stock H11’s from the other lights. I noticed a difference in the shop immediately. Im sure was same issue. I was going to cut open as you did and said the heck with it. I need to recheck it when it comes back in. Maybe they are aimed too low. Who knows. No worries. I did as I was asked to do. Lol
Thank you!!! Been trying to decide which route to go - just try new bulbs or replace the entire assembly with the Amazon after markets. Already had the dealership replace the entire assemblies last year and right back to being garbage! Difficult to see even early evening when leaving work now that it's getting dark much earlier. Absolute 💩. So disappointing Cadillac does jack for this issue.
Don, I saw where someone recommended LED lights. I've done that on my Chevy Traverse and its great. I have a 2012 SRX also, with the dim headlights. Are the LEDs the way to go, or are you saying a new headlight assembly is necessary also?
Yes, new headlight assemblies are required. The design of the bulbs (LED or Halogen) require a concave reflector to direct the light forward through the lens.
I got a set of 6500 K color LEDs to replace both low beams in our 2013 for $100.00. But I still say the designers and the company officials that won't admit that's it's junky work should be ashamed of theirselves.

@@Gods-Elect I'm sorry, been very busy. The LED bulbs did help, but I really think the better option is to get some aftermarket parts that are NOT from gm. One video showed that the reflective part of the headlight assy basically melts away because of the high temperature from the halogen bulbs. ( I forgot if it was a thin layer of chrome or aluminum, but either way, after it melts away, the housing really needs to be replaced.) Anyway, good luck and have a great weekend.
Don, would it be wise when I get the new assemblies to also get LED bulbs and replace the halogens before I put the new assemblies on? Since led burns about 300 degrees cooler?
Wait until your Traction Control light, ABS light and Brake light come on which is due to a bad ABS module, and GM knows about it as it's very common with this model. I was told by the Dealer that GM stop making ABS module for this model and they couldn't find any used part to replace it with and then charged me $250 dollars for diagnosing the issue in which I've already told them that it needs a new ABS module from the very beginning. The car only have 40K on it, and I also have to replace the liftgate module due to water leaking from the sunroof drainage to the spare tire well where the liftgate module sits. I then drilled a hole in the spare tire well, so the water can drain out. I also replaced the headlights and the taillights myself. The ABS module needs to be replaced by the Dealer because it needs to be programmed and no other shops can do it even if they can find the part.
I just bought my first cadillac. it's a 2008 srx and the headlights suuuuuck I csht see shit. might as well have no lights. Just trying to decide what to do
Thajk you. Fantastic explanation! Have mine for 9 yrs and 176k w DANGEROUS headlight output identical to your garage door demo. Your trailer absolutely validates your theory and explains the why regarding the problem. Cadi's class action law suit is an ABSOLUTE JOKE and an insult to anyones intelligence. (Talk about not taking ownership,,,, AND negotiating a ridiculous outcome that had to have been approved by a bogus judge...) Primary consumer of the brand is older generation and selling the car for years w this well known and dangerous problem speaks volumes about the business side of the co. (Car has done me really well, but headlights have always been issue. Wife (age 52 w good vision ) won't drive it and gives me grief when I offer it to my 23 yr old son to drive if his use might involve nightfall.) I have chinese HID's I've been running fine for ~3yrs, but output is same situation as your stock demo, just ~20%(?) brighter. (Improved from dangerous (stock), to fairly dangerous (HID)). I did Night Hawk stock replacement before that, w almost zero improvement. Your knowledge transfer gives me confidence to know HOW/WHY an aftermarket assembly will work better. I will replace for safety (me and next owner), looks (as current assemblies (like most 9 yr old plastic clear assembly covers )cloud and yellow requiring cleaning every 6 months), and improved resale value (or at least give me comfort I'm not selling 200k+ mile car to young kid that is really dangerous after dark). This is obviously one of my few hotbuttons - because: 1. I know untold qty of older folks have been getting financially reemed at the hands of Cadi and the stealerships over this topic. 2. The ridiculous resolution Cadi negotiated and the courts allowed in the class action law suit (this was just icing on the cake for any well informed SRX owner...)
Thank you. Just a quick question. I found the assembly on Amazon. Could not find the brand you used but found a set for $305. It says Halogen bulbs only. And I think it even comes with halogen bulbs(according to reviews). But will LED lights work in it? Or is there a specific assembly that I have to get for LED to work. Was thinking using LED to extend the life of new assembly. Thanks again
Will do. Will the LED bulbs go right into the new assembly or will I need a kit? Also as of now it looks like I have a low beam bulb and a high beam bulb in each assembly. With LED will it be a combo bulb and only need one bulb per assembly. Or will need to purchase a LED for low and another LED for high. So still two bulbs per assembly. Thanks.
@@gregmarek731 use the Amazon function for your make and model and they should fit. Now for the High beams, If your model is the same as mine you can use the halogen bulbs that are supplied with your new assemblies. It’s only the protractor beams (the ones behind the thick fisheye lenses) that get to hot.
Did anyone get the ACANNI "black" version? and did the work and fit the same as the shiny chrome ones? I need to order and find a body shop to install before we get in an accident. Don, I have followed with much interest your outstanding precision and detail for all you do. Just a comment on the Cadillac tech (as well as the Blazer lack of competence in its manufacture). This is the premiere GM brand and the headlight tech has evolved over the past 150 years - yet this issue persist. In looking at the new Hummer EV (at $115k for the top model); I wonder how much confidence the buying public will have in GM expertise in electricity.
Robert, The Hummer EV caught my eye as well but like you, I am apprehensive about buying from GM. Especially this early in the Hummer EV program and at that price! In my humble opinion it's not the lack of engineering evolution that bothers me its the lack customer support. Dim headlights on your premium line car with a class action law suite and they still won't pay the replacement cost. I think I would spend the 100K on a Tesla!

Suzanne’s, if it has projector beam headlight (most likely does) and if they have not been replaced, based on the response to this Video they will be a problem.
@@MrRv8pilot I confirm. I do have the problem with my SRX 2016 bought in Canada. Thank you so much Don for this video so well done. I am in the process of choosing an aftermarket assembly from Amazon and Led lights.
I was dumb enough to buy it and now I had to change the bulbs and it still has a low beam light to where it is dangerous to drive at night. Regret buying it from the dealer who said this one had no issues.
Great job. Good information. Do you think the chrome housing be re-chromed? Or painted with a heat resistant paint? But my big question is do you think it could go back together after taking apart? I just replaced the buds two day ago. Wow, what a pain.
Gino, in my opinion that would not be worth the effort. Just replace with aftermarket and be done with it. To much trouble taking the front bumper on and off to be experimenting with re-chrome or high temp paint. Ours aftermarket headlights are still burning bright after much use.
I just replaced the halogen bulbs with led, very little improvement. Looks like replacing the headlight assembly is the only fix. You're right, replacing the bulbs was a pain, especially the driver's side.
Nicely documented. Well explained and sufficiently detailed. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Above and beyond, for sure.

It's not just GM. My Toyota solara has the same problem. I'm buying aftermarket light fixtures which are like 180 bucks apiece. Upgrading the bulbs for cooler LEDs.... when I can afford it. Right now I have to drive with highbeams on!😡
The Ford dealer said myself Escape needed an engine . just went in for a oil change.. That was about 40000 miles ago.
I do if i think of it and yes it does make a difference. Let me know if you try it and what you think?
Using gas lanterns would be a big improvement over Cadillac's POS oem headlights.
Thank you! I like to get to the 'failure point' as you call it, Great work.
Thank you. I have a 2016 SRX and was wondering what was going on. What was the aftermarket assembly’s called?
Acanii is the brand I used. I just looked and they are still available from Amazon for $285. Mine are still working well. Don
@@MrRv8pilotthanks!
I ordered the same ones. They get here Thursday. Thanks again!
I got I got the same ones that you got. One question did you have to adjust the bulbs or the lens because I had to take it to the dealership because the Dim were shining too low pointed to low.
@@robertr804 I did have to adjust mine.
I bet this applies to '07 and newer Cadillacs. Thanks for the info and video.
Last year GM did a recall on the SRX headlight assembly, I have a 2014 Cadillac SRX and called my local Cadillac dealer they got my car in now my headlights work great, two hours and no charge.
What state are you in?
@@saward5826 Oregon
I pay $1720 to Central Cadillac of Ohio, and after 9 month GM send me a check for this.
Thanks! Great video - appreciate the assist…Happy Thanksgiving!
I cut them open with a wiz wheel, I didn’t see any way of getting them apart without destroying them.
I bought aftermarket, or the used car dealer I bought the 2014 SRX dealer from bought aftermarket bezels like you did but they did not help.
Anyone know if it's the same story on the first generation SRX? Having the same problem but it's both sides.
Did you cut the assembly apart to clean and apply the paint?
@@MrRv8pilot
No.
Good luck!
What were the headlights you purchased from Amazon?
I added the after market fog lights to improve the vision. Should be a recall since it's so dangerous. The interior delaminates from the plastic because of the heat of the halogens.
Very detailed! Thank you man I going thru this right now
Pop in some LEDs from headlight experts 3yrs ago never had another issue. Same car
Interesting, was your low beams noticeably dim before you installed the LEDs?
Really thorough video and explanation. Thank you!
Thanks Kelsey
Thank you so much for this very helpful video. I can't find the name of the aftermarket headlight assembly you bought from Amazon. Can you please let me know.

I just bought used a 2014 kia Sorento LX and have the same issue, low beams are too dim, even after replacing bulbs. Ive learned it may be the chrome inside the housing has melted away. On amazon i see some that look like chrome inside and others that look dark so I'm hesitant to buy them. Also need to change to LED,less heat.
Hey Don, how did you remove back plastic part on headlights? Having similar issue
We cleaned the hard water off the cover and worked great.
Thank you so much for the help.
You're welcome!
So it looks like the best fix is to replace the headlight assembly and install
LED bulbs. They run a lot cooler and should slow down the deterioration of the reflective material.
Correct, I put halogen bulbs in my new after market assemblies because that’s what I had on hand. But after doing this postmortem video I believe you are correct LED’s would be best.
@@MrRv8pilot will the LED fit the headlight assembly without the kit?
@@joeganns2510 I believe you can buy LED that at direct replacement for the halogen bulbs but if the reflective material is burnt off your headlight assembly reflector the LED’s will be worthless.
It's not just GM. My 2015 RAM has the same issue with its projector lamps. I've heard the shiny coating burns off at around 6,000 hrs run time.
I would be willing to bet the output is at least double the factory with a ton more light brightening up the ditches.
good info, thanks Tom.
I just did a set of these for somebody. I noticed a difference with new lights but they still aren’t happy with the low beams.
What type bulbs did you install?
@@MrRv8pilot stock H11’s from the other lights. I noticed a difference in the shop immediately. Im sure was same issue. I was going to cut open as you did and said the heck with it. I need to recheck it when it comes back in. Maybe they are aimed too low. Who knows. No worries. I did as I was asked to do. Lol
Robert, it must be the alignment. We’re still running the halogen bulbs and are happy with the performance.
So if I take mine apart like you did can I get it repaired or rechromed?
Thank you!!! Been trying to decide which route to go - just try new bulbs or replace the entire assembly with the Amazon after markets. Already had the dealership replace the entire assemblies last year and right back to being garbage! Difficult to see even early evening when leaving work now that it's getting dark much earlier. Absolute 💩. So disappointing Cadillac does jack for this issue.
What is the new model #
Hey Don….I’m having problems with the Q touchscreen….some of it does not work…and suggested…I have 2013 srx…
Any suggestions Don…
Nope no idea
Don, I saw where someone recommended LED lights. I've done that on my Chevy Traverse and its great. I have a 2012 SRX also, with the dim headlights. Are the LEDs the way to go, or are you saying a new headlight assembly is necessary also?
Yes, new headlight assemblies are required. The design of the bulbs (LED or Halogen) require a concave reflector to direct the light forward through the lens.
Thank you! We have the exact same vehicle and the same issue.
Great Job!! Thank you for taking the time to do this. Send this to GM! So did you end up using LED lows? If so, which ones?
Thank you, no I put the halogen back in (so far so good) but probably not a bad idea to use the lower temp LEDs.
I got a set of 6500 K color LEDs to replace both low beams in our 2013 for $100.00.
But I still say the designers and the company officials that won't admit that's it's junky work should be ashamed of theirselves.

I'm sorry, been very busy. The LED bulbs did help, but I really think the better option is to get some aftermarket parts that are NOT from gm.
One video showed that the reflective part of the headlight assy basically melts away because of the high temperature from the halogen bulbs. ( I forgot if it was a thin layer of chrome or aluminum, but either way, after it melts away, the housing really needs to be replaced.)
Anyway, good luck and have a great weekend.
I think it's funny how many of these are passenger side. mine is the same right now passenger side as well.
I’ve noticed that as well, strange!
Great walkthrough. Did the same exact steps.
Thanks great walkthrough!
Don, would it be wise when I get the new assemblies to also get LED bulbs and replace the halogens before I put the new assemblies on? Since led burns about 300 degrees cooler?
Yes

The brand is ACANII, at 6:53 has the Amazon page. Don
Will these aftermarkets work with the active motion system.
Im not sure but if you order replacements for your year and model then they most likely will work.

You watched the video, you know what to do now!
Hi, what brand of aftermarket headlights improved the brightness?
Amazing video thank you very much extremely helpful 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
This is obviously one of my few hotbuttons - because:
1. I know untold qty of older folks have been getting financially reemed at the hands of Cadi and the stealerships over this topic.
2. The ridiculous resolution Cadi negotiated and the courts allowed in the class action law suit (this was just icing on the cake for any well informed SRX owner...)
Well said,Tom

wonder if you can powder-coat that piece ? that would make a better fix.
I don’t think powder coat will take the heat, but let us know if you try it and it works.
The mirror finish is probably from a really thin layer of aluminium.
The stock lights on my 2017 Ram 1500 were also very dim! I swapped all my lights with Morimoto lights -
Yes I believe LED will work and that's the combination I would recommend. (new light assemblies + LED bulbs) good luck and let us know how it works.

Yes, Halogen and the wife is still happy 😀
Nailed it. Thanks a lot !
Are they still reimbursing to fix these?
They didn’t reimburse me and based on the comments left for this video I don’t think GM has paid to fix a single headlight.
