In that time I imagine that most of the models with which we really concern ourselves will be highly sought after. Look at how the rere models are already being sought by collectors. From what I’ve been able to glean from the market, even those are being phased out for another period of time. So who knows, in 15 years we could be talking about the 2012 Lunchbox as a “classic”.
The first Carbon Tamiya Buggy Frame was the Avante Hop-Up kit, it was the same as the egress's and offered as a hop up part for the Avate, alongside the new front/rear swing arms, steering kit (that came with frame) these at first came out of the same material as the original frame is memory serves and then later Carbon Fibre (I used to race at the same club as Jamie Booth back in the day and also raced Tamiya).
I bought the hornet, bigfoot, double dare and several others as a kid from towerHobbie's I've loved rc all my life still do. I confess I'll take the brushless stuff now hands down. It runs forever and is water proof.
Take the avante any day. What a beast. 26 years haven’t changed that much. If they could’ve built more reliability into the avante they’d still race them! I like the trf though, less moving parts and a lot stronger. But I’d still take the avante.
Brilliant going mate I really enjoyed this I’ve been following you for quite some time and I always enjoy your videos keep up the good videos always looking forward to seeing more 👌👌
Its like Arnold and body building , anything new will only be a classic , everything that follows will be forgotten. RC was new in the 80's and that's why we remember them all...
Really like these videos. I've always wanted a Tamiya kit and I found a Top Force and RCMart has that and the new CC02 chassis. Now I can't make up my mind which I want.
Get a Top Force. The DF-01 is a fun vintage chassis. There's sort of a list of great Tamiya builds that one has to try. The DF-01 is on that list. CC-02? Couldn't care less. If you want a CC, get a CC-01.
have you located the Tamiya Hop-Ups kit, that changes out the front and rear spider geared diff's over to adjustable ball diff's, and comes with a few other mod parts for the motor mounting plate/heatsink..... ? Changes the entire performance of the Avante, as I have mentioned in one of your older videos about the Avante.... I remember the kits sitting on my workbench back then, having the thought, that the geared diff's are fine, and will play with them later... months went by... once installed... and once adjusted..... changed everything how the Avante handled and cornered, launched, etc.... so worth it!!!!!!!!!!! 28 years ago, the full kit was only like 30 US bucks....
I think the biggest issue with the suspension on the old one is the geometry of the front shocks. Having them laid down that far leads to some really undesirable effective spring rate and damping characteristics. I don't know what lead them to do that but they had to know it was a bad idea. Its also funny that they have regressed from shaft drive to belt drive.
It’s all about aerodynamics hence modern buggies all look very similar. The Avante’s body doesn’t provide much downforce with its curves (but looks great) not good for racing. Probably one of the reasons it performed average in racers back in the day.
RC PATAPOUF Already done buddy, I’ve just done 3x videos on the White Impact including putting it through it’s paces on the gravel 🚗💨💨 Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
Because traction is getting higher on today's tracks most new race buggy's are shaft driven and run gear diff's, belt drives are becoming a lot less popular, so a lot of the late model buggy's have more in common with the Avanti
My opinion is that new things are far inferior in any way - made just so a product has to be made , while vintage things were made as an exercise of engineering that had to be done in the best possible way and last forever... :)
I don't like belt driven rc cars and for me the Avante is a masterpiece of engineering consider it's time. Maybe she's not the best track permorfer but her charm is unbeatable. I have a Hobbytech Nxt spirit and a couple of Mugens and none of them deliver me the fun i have everytime i drive the Avante. They just feel like super-precise fast machines...and empty ones.
Have you owned and raced a TRF503? Those belts are perfect for the job. Six years on and I'm still racing my 503 and it keeps up with anything else just fine. It's worth noting that Tamiya didn't stop TRF offroad because they could not win, they simply did it because they wanted to focus elsewhere. The TRF420 is one hell of a touring chassis. TRF offroad or not, Tamiya TRF knows what they are doing, and if they wanted to get back into offroad racing, they could do so.
Too bad Tamiya doesn’t put out another super scale car so that you could compare it to the tgr. I still have mine, thought of getting rid of it two times, but I’m going to hold on to it.
Bases on track performance the TRF is an obvious choice, in 26 years no one will even remember it but they remember the Avante wven with its limitations they qill always remember the Avante.
The TRF503 is already expensive. The only one I have seen on e-bay is almost $2500. The body and chassis on the Avante are works of art. The TRF503 chassis looks very utilitarian and the body is butt ugly.
I'm ignorant, but I don't understand why all the modern buggies all have that pig ugly sloping cab design,i mean put different paint wheels and stickers on it and it could be anything.I love the vintage Tamiya, they had so much style and personality. But hey ho,thats an old fart that was raised on 80s' Tamiya from Beatties.
No excuses with time moving on vs aesthetics - the 501 and 511 shells were rather nice and they were the actual Tamiya shells for these TRF 4WD buggies. The aftermarket Proline shell is ugly and others like Yokomo, Kyosho, Schumacher all follow suit with these ugly can forward designs. Great video nonetheless 👍🏻
Exactly. The 54133 is what should have been on it for comparison, not that boxy cab-forward nonsense. Ithe 511 shell is a gorgeous shell, espeically in some of the PS "anodized" colours.
If you look at the past few years tamiya has re-released a lot of it's back catalogue of cars mainly buggies and mostly for us old farts out there🤣 but all of them got character eg.. the hornet (my fave) was blisteringly quick out of the box for that period but shocking suspension and cornering made it a handful but that was the fun of it.. you can now pick up a cheap brushless and lipo car and it would rip it apart.. it's the same here with these buggies, the new one no doubt will be like sh*t of a shovel but got no soul like the avante which still looks awesome naked even today.. can't see new rc cars being re-released in years to come, can you?
Savyboy Bajabuster Yeah you make great points buddy 👊🏻 Regarding the new cars being re-re’d in the future I really have no idea. I’d say not a chance but with Tamiya you just never know lol 😂 Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated 👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends The belt system in the 503 is incredibly smooth. A well shimmed shaft setup can be equally smooth, but there is something cool about the silent nature and extreme smoothness of the belt system.
I just got a 1988 avante and can’t stop looking at it. It’s amazing the thought and engineering that went it this car. Love your comparison.

Thanks for watching my friend it’s much appreciated 👊🏻
I absolutely fell in love with the looks of the Avante in 1988!! All of the golden era cars are amazing to me.
The thing about Tamiya models is that they’re timeless. They’re stunningly engineered and the quality shows.
Jub
Totally agree, however I’d imagine that in years to come the 503 will be sought after too 😊👊🏻

I’d never thought of it like that, but yes you’re right buddy. That’s pretty crazy 😊👊🏻
The only major gripe is the plastic on the vintage models, crack here super glue there
The avante is just stunning. Absolutely stunning.

Oh wow that’s awesome my friend and very cool 😎
Those Avante original carbon chassis’s are mega rare to find.
Thanks for watching 👊🏻
To be honest, in the looks department, you should have used the TRF503 body. Modern, but still very much Tamiya. Hate the boxy cab forward designs.
thank you! from japan!

You can do more on this type of comparison, hot shot series vs. TT02B, hornet/grasshopper vs. DT03, TA02 vs. TT02
