Goodluck guys! I'm a Game Dev and College Professor in the Worcester Area. It's always nice to see local devs trying some interesting stuff in the indie space.
As a game developer student, devblogs are the best way (for me at least) to learn how to roadmap games. This video is one such. It is always more helpful to watch people overcome mistakes than just following a tutorial. Not just at a technical level, such as blueprint, but also level design choices. Can't wait for the next devblogs!
* to make a game fresh and unique, doesn't mean use new mechanics that have never be seen. It could be something visual, something on the audio part of the game (like hellblade did) or the interactivity players can have with eachother in multiplayer games. Just imagine a typical fps game with some parkour on roofs, but players can catch eachother from some big heights, or a long jump. Doesn't that have the feeling of a fresh idea, although its yet an other fps? That's my perspective at least :)
The street size issue is why people suggest working on small POC parts of the game and refine later. If you only had 1 street and 2 building on each side, once you were playing you'd know and it would've taken an hour or less to resize the initial POC map. I've subbed, very excited to see the progress. These types of games have been my favorite since COD W@W introduced me and Call of Duty to zombies.
You guys are literally making one of my dream games. As a professional game dev working in the AAA, it makes me so happy seeing people making this type of amazing games that we don't see as much today, inpired in the ones I played the most during my school days. Keep it up
Haven't really had a god co-op zombie game I have liked since Left 4 Dead 2, so I am very interested to see what you guys make. Subscribed and looking forward to future updates!
This game has good potential, I love a good game I can enjoy with my friends and have fun. I played COD: BO2 zombies when I was a kid and I feel like this game can respark that feeling I hade then. Really looking forward to seeing you create and build this game and I would love to playtest it and help with finding bugs in the maps, etc. Much love from Sweden!
Wow, the environments look so good and aren’t overly cluttered or complicated like a lot of L4D2 custom maps, you guys are really nailing the creepy liminal space aesthetic of Valve maps. Dark and abandoned in a hurry. It’s also like Silent Hill
This game looks awesome, good job 🎉 I think that some muzzle fire/light could make the difference in a very spooky and day scenario like yours. I really liked the simplicity and minimalist touch with the great graphics of Unreal Engine. Keep up the good work ;)
I'm not a seasoned game developer, but I have a small suggestion. It looks like your game is heavily focused on multiplayer for fun. I would recommend adding as much interaction as possible between players, as well as between players and the environment. The environmental interactions will provide a significant boost to the game's experience. I'm sure you have already planned for this, but I thought I'd share my thoughts.
Best of luck! As someone in their 30s now, this is the era of games that I sorely miss. Something that makes these games so special is the mod support/workshop. I know you are a small team, but would highly consider mod support to prolong the life with custom maps etc.
wow this could be amazing and wish you guys the best of luck, I think one thing that makes left 4 dead stand out from the crowd in the coop zombie shooter genre is the atmosphere and also sounds, i think if you guys can nail that this could be what all of us coop zombie fans have been waiting for. Can’t wait to see how this games progresses
I loved how you want to keep the scope of the game centered in the coop and closed-open areas, this is a great decision that was taken. But I would recommend blocking the levels first and maybe creating a tool to help place the streets and buildings, cuz is better to lose 2 weeks of building this tool than 1 or 2 months of refactoring some levels.
The #1 thing you have going for you over l4d is not graphics, but the lack of any corporate push. If you guys flesh out the shooter mechanics, interactions, optimisation (make this game able to run on a potato), and don't let scope creep get the better of you, you guys could be pumping out tons and tons of levels during development and have a solid shot at l4d's success. L4d2 still has such an active community thanks to its level count + mod map support giving it heaps of content and its platform accessibility. That formula with a fresh look and a few fresh tweaks would hit pretty hard. I'd always wanted to make a l4d2 inspired title of my own but excited to see this come to fruition.
looking great man, can't wait to see it. Hope it turns out good, looks like it might i think the flashlight is kind of bad tbh, doesn't feel really good I know it's a completely different game, but the realistic flashlight mod for factorio is such a good flashlight. The difference between it, and vanilla, just makes the game feel so much better and more grounded
We understand the flashlight showcased in devlog 1 isn’t great. Changes to the flashlight have been added to our backlog so expect improvements in some of the next devlogs!
OOH this is amazing and i really look forward to this game releasing. I am a beginner in developing games and this just warms my heart and motivities me to keep going. as you continue making your game be sure to make every little thing smooth and have cool details and designs that will perk up the excitement!!
Here a couple of little thingis I think: Bullet hole effects should be bigger, bullets create big holes, also the sound design for shooting should be louder, I know game is in early beggining, just some recomendations I thought! Keep the great stuff
One important thing is style; Every game needs to be unique, no-one wants a bland game. For example, the image of the survivor or whatever in the bottom left looks very bland and flat, you could try adding some style, maybe some like sketch-type picture. But either way I am very excited to see the development of the game!
Awesome work, respect for the initiative and approach to this project! Just some small feedback, it would be much more satisfying for a player to have an animation when turning on the flashlight, either by attaching it to the gun or holding it somehow. Can't wait to see what you guys will do for the zombie AI! :)
I noticed that you didn't list Back4Blood among your inspirations and I hope that means that you have taken a close look why the supposed spiritual successor to Left4Dead just didn't measure up. I think this video ( ua-cam.com/video/EdRLNUGmFC8/v-deo.html ) did a great job capturing what made Left4Dead such a masterpeice that still holds up today. I wish you guys the best of success. There's nothing I want more than a worethy successor
It's funny how much i appreciate Working doors or a flashlight. after i started making games, i've begun to grow a great appreciation for being able to do the small things. And i sincerely want to make a high quality Zombie game too. I'll sub and follow because this looks amazing. Right up my alley. One day it'd be nice to work with a small group of indie's to make an amazing game.
Hey Guys, Love this idea, we don't have many good zombie games as of late, one suggestion for the roads, instead of using a load of planes, why not use a mesh spline, it would make it easier to set them up, you could even have them overlay on top of a landscape, this way you wouldn't need to move the whole map if you need to change them :) anyway looking forward to seeing more
Looking good! I'm not that interested in the game per se (not that into shooters, multiplayer or zombie games) , but I'm very interested in the journey. Consider me subscribed!
I share this opinion with AAA games being very lackluster, also my love for l4d been playing it a long time I can't wait to see this game's vision come to life I'm really excited already just seeing how you guys are so passionate about mashing the old with the new i really hope support picks up i know for a fact when this game does get released I'll be playing it with my friends cause we love games like l4d and killing floor i wish you guys all the best i can't wait to see the progression keep up the amazing work and this is one of the only games I'll be looking forward to the release. for such a small indie team you guys are doing amazing keep it up heaps of support coming from Australia.
The weapon view model should be lowered and kinda snugged towards the bottom center to take up less space on the screen. Otherwise it will cause a so-called S.T.A.L.K.E.R effect where the weapon would sometimes cover upto one third of a screen and would result in a very akward feeling while moving around which we already see here.
Hello, fellow animator here. I think you should move the camera a bit more forward. Try only showing the wrist or 1/2 of the forearm since it looks awkward to look at and it clutters too much of the center screen. Goodluck on your game development. We need more zombie games like this again.
A feature that might be a good idea is if a zombie is at very low health, you can do a special mlee attack that wouldnt waste any bullets and would have a cool animation to it like in doom 2016.
Awesome video! So far I am really loving the game idea and gameplay of your game. I'm a huge fan of Dead Island and Dying Light games and any games similar to those I really like. Your game already looks and feels good especially the player movement part. Also the bullet hit decal on different materials is spot on and looks good as well. Just subbed. Looking forward to your next devlog. Keep it up! :)
I just started deep diving into godot (was messing with unreal before) but still relatively new in game dev. I work professionally as a software engineer so love the coding part of games. Love this devlog and definitely will be following. Wish i could help out as i love your vision on this game but ill sit tight and watch the progress lol.
Hey if you’re looking for some horror ideas. I think for the atmosphere you’re going for would have a zombie that stalks you throughout the map. Like you see the shadow at the top of the stairs as it runs away. All for it to jump scare you at the end before the safe room. You have a really great idea. And can’t wait to give it a try
some possible good additions could be more feeling of actually shooting a gun like camera shake slightly and for the flash light it would be better if the light bounced a few times or add a shallow layer of light around the current existing one because it would be useless i mean the flashlight
and if possible add a very unique title screen that would make someone think o yeah this is the title screen for this game i mean make it original dont use a generic title screen and pause screen
thanks for the feedback! A lot of these features are in really early development so we are just focusing on getting the core mechanics down before making it pretty. These features will be heavily improved in our next devlog!
Looks really awesome so far! Only criticism I can give is to try and make the reload animations as "out of the way" as possible. I always find it frustrating when a reload animation covers the centre or centre horizontal third of the screen, it stops your vision in front of you and is just generally annoying. IMO reload animations should take place off to the side, so there's as little obstruction to the player's view as possible.
@Broken Chair Studios If I was you I would be thinking in this aspect. Just want to see your studio succeed. 1. The lights are still on in your game, does that mean the zombie outbreak just happened? 2. Maybe have a kickass intro making it realistic to power grids. 3. I hope this finds your studio in good health. If you need a game tester let me know. I'm also on my Game Dev learning journey.
So far, you guys got some pretty good groundwork. For a 2-man team, it's pretty impressive! Are you guys planning to have some sort of discord where you can get feedback and set up play testing groups? If so, I would love to join it! Can't wait to see what comes next!
Hey, thanks! We are planning on launching a discord in the near future. Once the game is in a playable state, we will absolutely be looking for testers!
Hello guys. I think you can improve the torchlight, because at the time you recorded the video it seems to me a bit too claustrophobic, in a way that's almost annoying. I was thinking that maybe you could create a less bright area around the torch because in this way your eye can more likely passively gain information from the surroundings without directly pointing in one direction. In this case the claustrophobia would continue to be a major factor because you would still directly look objects to make sure they're there.
Awesome video. Really good devlog. I like the concept and really enjoy this genre of games. So this is right up my street. Have you thought about using PRAS procedural recoil system for your weapons ?
looking forward to it! try moving the guns more to the right in 1st person, it's blocking the view and a bit distracting. since u are using a powerful engine anyways, try focusing a bit on the lighting in the game design, specially the flash light and also the dark areas, use post prossecing to give yourr game a unique tune and look. good luck!
Can't wait for more updates! The zombies landscape has been plagued with games that are initially pretty cool, but replayability is meh at best (yes COD I'm looking at you). TBH felt hopeless for gaming until Helldivers 2 came out and my passion was reignited. This game is also getting me excited to see what you guys have in store for the future! Super ambitious and I love it. Can't wait for the beta! PS. I hope Jason does ALL the animations and is a playable character, cause I want to make him do dumb things in the game (it's Amilcar lol)
As much project safe room is a good name but it makes it sound like a base building/defence hold out game as in it takes time as its a project and the focus of the game is safe rooms but this is just my interpretation when i see the games name. The ideas are looking bright. Cant wait to see it come together keep up the great work 👍
Project SAFEROOM is just the codename for the project before we announce the actual game name. The full game name announcement will be soon along with our steam store page!
This looks very promising! I'm another indie dev working on a fast paced arena FPS. I've got tons of Unreal experience, with the majority of it being multiplayer experience. If you guys ever need help with anything multiplayer, whether that's how to achieve something or optimizing, or anything regarding FPS game feel, feel free to reach out! I love helping other people in Unreal as much as possible!
The sparks on the wavy metal linger too long like lava. The animations for the left hand interacting with the gun feel slomo. The flashlight would add a small amount of ambient light outside of the most bright circle area so you wouldn't be in quite pitch black (test this irl and you'll see) it takes away from the experience as is. Great progress so far and i love your vision, i too am starting a game due to the industry's absolute fumble of responsibility to make anything worth a damn.
Looks like it could be a lot of fun. I wonder what things you will do differently from games like left for dead. I don’t know anything about game development but it seems like a really hard thing to do for your first game, but if it doesn’t turn out the way you wanted it to you will probably be much more skilled developers on future projects. It’s really nice to see two people have more passion than most big game developers. If you succeed then it looks like it could be a fantastic game that could potentially compete with something like helldivers 2. Speaking of helldivers it will be cool if you could dolphin dive.
Hey guys, love some of your background philosophy that's going into creating this. I share similar values for my own projects. I'm from the Salem, nh area and I've been doing unreal engine and VR for 8+ years now. Hit me up if you ever run into any trouble or need help / advice. Happy to share my knowledge.
Obviously you said the maps are going to be linear but do you think there might be a survival mode like in Cod feel like I haven’t had a good survival mode since black ops 2
Goodluck guys! I'm a Game Dev and College Professor in the Worcester Area. It's always nice to see local devs trying some interesting stuff in the indie space.

I'm a simple man. I see a devlog, I click! This looks very promising! Can't wait to see more!
LOL, the literal exact same reason I clicked on the video. Love seeing other indie devs and their projects, especially when it's in unreal!
It's not until you start developing a game you realize just how big a feature "working doors" really is.
Looking good, will be watching for this one
Looking good gents, can't wait to see what this turns out to be.

i'm starting my journey myself, for now its just for fun and learn, its really nice to see anothers people start, best of luck for you guys
for the beginning o the game does look incredible!! I looking forward to see this game complete...
It's awesome to see more of these types of co-op games in development, best of luck!!

this looks sick, cant wait to see the next devlog. good luck guys!
keep on guys, i have recently finished my simple 2d game on unity, now going after simple 3 d
All the best ❤🤗
I hope everything goes like how you want it and that your game succeeds.

looks cool. It would be great if you guys add small details in the map to explain the lore. For example how the zombie apocalypse started.
The shooting animations at the last section look like the generic unreal engine slop you see on steam.
Thanks for the feedback!

@9:36 when the characters are changing direction while walking it looks like there gliding.

Yes, we are actively implementing a PRAS recoil system as we speak! Look out for devlog 2 for a lot of updates on our recoil system.

looking forward to it!
try moving the guns more to the right in 1st person, it's blocking the view and a bit distracting.
since u are using a powerful engine anyways, try focusing a bit on the lighting in the game design, specially the flash light and also the dark areas, use post prossecing to give yourr game a unique tune and look.

PS. I hope Jason does ALL the animations and is a playable character, cause I want to make him do dumb things in the game (it's Amilcar lol)
That is a great idea! We'll have to get Jason in here as a playable character!
Love it. Can't wait for it
nice video!
Superbbbb
good luck to you
As much project safe room is a good name but it makes it sound like a base building/defence hold out game as in it takes time as its a project and the focus of the game is safe rooms but this is just my interpretation when i see the games name.
I am early wating for this game to play, love from India
As an indie solodeveloper at the moment, I hope you guys can reach steam lunch.
Gotta say, this already looks better than B4B.
I look forward to seeing more!
The only thing that doesn’t look that good is the flash light since it’s so small but that is probably easy to change (I don’t know if it is)
Maybe add some shakescreen when shooting
i love it
Good luck
Got a sub from me. Interested to see how everything goes and good luck!
Looks very cool! What method did you guys use to solve the weapon clipping?
Thanks! We created a material that renders the first person arms and weapons first before everything else so it never clips
@@BrokenChairStudios thanks for the reply!
Are you guys using procedural recoil or baked in with animations? The recoil for the AK seems a bit much, but could maybe be tweaked
Yes, we’re using procedural recoil. There’s definitely lots of improvements we need to make with that
Very good
I am waiting ❤❤❤❤
5:22 im nevere using that restroom
Hey brody!
We got some cool features being worked on behind the scenes. When they're ready we'll make sure to share them!
@@BrokenChairStudios I will be patient
your voice is similar to Jays from the Kubz Scouts 😁
This looks really cool, are you guys coding in blueprints or c++?
blueprints!
+1 Good luck 🍀
Hey guys, love some of your background philosophy that's going into creating this. I share similar values for my own projects.
I'm from the Salem, nh area and I've been doing unreal engine and VR for 8+ years now. Hit me up if you ever run into any trouble or need help / advice. Happy to share my knowledge.
Will you be having flashlight inertia?
Obviously you said the maps are going to be linear but do you think there might be a survival mode like in Cod feel like I haven’t had a good survival mode since black ops 2
Our base game won’t be round based survival. But, we aren’t opposed to adding it as a secondary game mode!
Looks Great! I've been dying for a new co-op experiance. Will it be on steam?
Yes, this game will be available on Steam!
