Amaravati Now Sees A Dramatic Turnaround | After A 5 Year Lull Created by Jagan || ETV Special Focus

- The capital city project, which was dumped by the YSRCP government to take forward its three-capital agenda, is again up and running with the TDP-led NDA dispensation in Andhra Pradesh, with the active support of the Union government, taking it up with renewed vigour and making efforts to start works costing ₹45,000 crore in Januray-February 2025 Till the NDA allies - TDP, Jana Sena Party and BJP - swept to power in the 2024 general elections, there was no light at the end of the tunnel for the Amaravati project, which was off to a flyer with Prime Minister Narendra Modi laying the foundation for it in October 2015, as former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy thought of having three capitals instead of one. As a consequence, Amaravati had lost its sheen. After a five-year gap, Amaravati witnessed a dramatic turnaround after N. Chandrababu Naidu took over the reins as Chief Minister in June 2024, and works had since moved at a fast pace. The 29 capital villages were a beehive of activity as the Interim Government Complex, the High Court and various other buildings had been constructed in an expeditious manner between 2014 and 2019.
Growth centre
This was evident from the World Bank (WB) approving a $800 million loan for the Amaravati Integrated Urban Development Program (AIUDP) as per the request made by the Government of India (GoI). The WB said the AIUDP was aimed at establishing the capital city as a well-managed, climate-resilient growth centre in Andhra Pradesh that would generate employment and improve the lives of its current and future residents, especially the most vulnerable. Besides, the HUDCO committed itself to lend ₹11,000 crore for Amaravati.
A few weeks earlier, the State Government had given an undertaking to the Supreme Court that it would complete the capital city development in three years, having “firmly concluded” Amaravati as the single capital of Andhra Pradesh, to clear the path for it by having a batch of writ petitions disposed.
The government is now in the process of inviting tenders for capital works costing more than ₹45,000 crore and commencing them in January-February 2025.
The Amaravati master plan, which was prepared by London-based Foster + Partners, remains largely unchanged, and this is poised to start taking shape in the coming months.
Mr. Naidu is pulling out all stops to complete the ambitious project of constructing the core capital, which will be spread in 217 square km. The government is thus expected to take a big leap soon in developing the capital.
