Keep in mind that naval ships cost at least five hundred million a pop on the low side, 13 billion with a B on the high. That mean losing even a single one would cost five hundred million minimum. So it’s a simple question of whether to use a ten million dollar missile you already bought for this express purpose, or lose a several billion dollar warship

@@thanosianthemadtitanicDOGE is going to destroy us because he doesn’t understand the cost of human capital. It isn’t infinite. Just ask Amazon who have some warehouses they’ve had to shut down because they ran out of people they would hire after everyone who lived in the area who was willing to work for them did and then left and weren’t willing to go back. And those are just grunt workers. They’re not the ones with the highly specialized knowledge that you need to keep around and up to date on the technology they work on because if they leave, even if you hire them back, they won’t know what they would have known if you’d kept them. The loss of expertise is not something you get back easily - it’s gone for years or decades and may never be able to be gotten back.
This is fine if the world were to just continue to run on autopilot like it felt like it has over the last 50 years, but that wasn’t actually running on autopilot - that’s what real leadership looks like. Invisible until it’s gone, only then do you realize what was lost.

Firing bullets into the ocean for "practice" has always seemed just extravagantly wasteful to me. Not because of the immediate $ cost of the ammo being fired, but because that's metal that's irreversibly lost to human access (the way things stand now).
