Thank you for your video - my husband and I will be taking the Autotrain for the first time in the next year -- no more white-knuckle driving through the states where the 70-mile speed limit doesn't even have the status of a suggestion.
The Auto Train is an experience. I have transported cars five times back and forth via the AT. I, however, will not take the train if I cannot get the sleeping accommodation. Family Room, Bedroom, Roomette. What is the difference you might ask. The family room has the largest sleeping capacity. The family room gives you access to both sides of the train but doesn’t have a bathroom. The bedroom room is smaller than the family room but has sink, toilet, and shower facilities in the room. The sleeping accommodation is bigger than the roomette. The roomette is smaller sleeping area and no toilet. For example, I’m six foot six inches. My toes touch the end of roomette and my head touches the other side. As I’ve alluded to my size, there is plenty of legroom in coach seating and you can recline the seats pretty far back. But, people will be walking through the car all night. I’m a light sleeper and have difficulty with this. I made an error booking my trip north last year resulting in my being forced to cancel my roomette and travel coach. I am happy to report that the coach car was quieter overnight than it was when I traveled coach years ago. Seems like the car was more insulated.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, we probably will opt for the bedroom the next time we ride the train. Even if we don't use the AutoTrain. To be honest, the drive from Lorton, Virginia to New York City was a bit more congested than I like at my age! So, a train with a bedroom all the way to Penn Station would be ideal!
@@theworldspinsfineonherown You are welcome; I took the Lake Shore Limited from New York to Chicago. I attempted to save money by going coach, on the return trip I decided to forget about the budget and upgraded to a roomette. I just couldn’t get comfortable enough to sleep. That’s a nineteen hour trip and in coach I experienced every hour when it was time to sleep in coach. One return trip in the roomette, I slept the entire time. I wish you safe travels on all of your journeys. 😊
Thank you for writing and our apologies for taking so long to reply. Coach was okay. We did see some families with young children. I think the ride went well for them. Being able to get up and visit the dining car made it a lot more enjoyable for us so I'm guessing that is true for families with young children also.
Thanks for helping with my decision. After watching your first trip up and you mentioned you might get a room back so I contacted Amtrak, for an extra $600 plus we could do the smaller room. One night not worth it. Flew to Europe a few years ago in coach, I’ll deal with one night. Again thanks for the video
We're taking the AutoTrain on 2/5/23 south, spending time in the Orlando area to attend a national convention, then driving home so we can stop in the Destin area to see relatives. Last time we were in Florida was 50 years ago when we honeymooned in Miami Beach! Thanks for your documentaries...
how do you check in? do you park your car first. then walk in to the station and check in. then walk back out to your car and get in line?....or do you take your car through the check in line outside first and then you walk in the station and then check in physically? how does that part work?....thenks for the video...
We pulled up to the line that stated to wait. Then an attendant came out and instructed us pull ahead, the person in the booth verified our reservations, then we pulled up to the place where we exited the car leaving the keys in the ignition. Then we went inside to check in and wait for boarding time.
We arrived at about noon on both our trip north and then south. Probably a bit earlier than necessary but we were concerned that unforeseen circumstances might happen (which, thankfully, they didn’t!)
Great couple, great video.

Thanks for sharing.
Great videos, I'll be riding in August
How do you get a seat assignment in coach. Do they give you your seats at check in? Loved the video
Thank you for writing. Yes, we were assigned the seats in all of the Amtrak trips we have taken so far.
How is couch sitting, do you recommend, I’m traveling with my three kids , 6 , 11, 12 , thank you for your response.

What time did you guys get to the station

From when you checked in to when you needed to board the train and then depart, how much time would say it took?
We checked in at noon which is kinda early. The train boarded at 3:30 and the train departed at 5 or so.
