- Jack Black never once thought Tenacious D should be a serious band. That's not to say they don't have a mission. The D is here to mock the serious bands.

'cheese blast' 'corn sauce' 'clown powder'
My thoughts exactly.
hes a genius
all these drugs and more can be found at your local Tenacious D minimart.
Every time he said one of these words, I broke out laughing. No idea how Sam Jones didn't just lose it.. LOL
I love JB :)
Jack Black has a way of coming up with terms I've never heard before but I know exactly what they mean.
So he is good at expressing himself.
He’s much more articulate than most people give him credit for.
Clown Powder
He's like Shakespeare
"Clown powder"
You can't listen to tenacious d and not acknowledge that they are insanely musically talented. To me tenacious d is a regular band that I would listen to anywhere. I can't hear dude I totally miss you and not think of like 8 of my best buddies.
todd suriano such an amazing sing. One of my faves
This is completely true. I saw them in Chicago just a couple of weeks ago and in terms of musicality and performance they are very much a "serious" band in that regard.
8 best buddies? Big respect.
I shed a single tear from all three of my eyes every time I hear “Fuck Her Gently”
👀 🍆
I can't stop getting sad with baby
"Hot blast of cheese" - Jack Black
Twitch I wish he'd give me a hot blast of cheese
when he said that, i thought he meant it was good..lol
Twitch jacks the man
Twitch “melodramatic corn sauce”
Great band/album name
I need Jack Black's vocabulary xD
Member Berry
member when Jack Black was serious?
Dao Yang nope
Fucking clown powder.
Dao Yang no i really dont
He’s the best at turning a great nonsense phrase that makes immediate sense.
How did the interviewer not burst out laughing as soon as he said, "Clown powder"?
John Smith because hes not 6
sarin royce Man this guys a buzzkill
you get a buzz from reading comments? what are you 6?
Elegant Butterfly - Kid, you need to lighten up
Brace Yourself Lighten up? what are you 6? hurr hurr hurr I'm mature
"It was just a hot..blast of cheese." lmfao I'm dead

No ur not...
@@skaggulkbergstrom2019 Yes he is, RIP
"I fucking love this band. They are the best band ever; PERIOD!"
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN... TENACIOUS.... DEEEE!
"Since the beginning of time, 'twas written in the stones that a band would come. Well that band has come, and now are here to come again.. In your ear pussies."
this is a serious afirmation or this is just a tribute?
“This uh next band asked me not to read this
But, goddammit, I'm going to read it anyway
Because I wrote it, and it's the truth”
That's not an opinion, that's a fact
melo dramatic Corn Sauce
Jove Mil Marc my fav genre
Make fun is in fact a serious thing.
Just look at Weird Al. The guy pours so much effort and research into everything he parodies to get every joke and reference right.
TinUser wierd other people think inversely
He who is tired of Wierd Al is tired of life
The Tenacious D movie is rotten.
You got to play to your strengths.. and Jack is a comedic genius, and not in a manufactured stand-up comic way. Funny is in his bones.
"Why aren't you a serious band?"
"Whaddaya mean, like, Pearl Jam?"
The funny thing is, that they have seriousness in their lyrics but clad in a comedic veil.
It's just another approach on how to express it.
I feel like The Metal is a pretty serious song .
Wonderboy, even with a few goofy moments, also has some pretty serious undertones
The Ballad of Hollywood Jack and the Rage Kage is beautiful
Wonderboy. Kielbasa. History. The metal. Pod. Fuckn bomb songs
@@juliananthony1226 Very awesome songs but not overly serious lyrics, not that they're bad, just not serious. My kielbasa sausage buttcheeks are warm. lol
Dude I totally miss you is
kinda serious too
In a weird way, he's made metal more accessible to a lot of people. Even if it's meant as a joke, homage, or mash up, the songs stand on their own.
2:30 - I can imagine a stoned Eddie being freaked out that that Jack is talking to him through the screen.
What Tenacious D are best at are writing serious songs but in the mindset of over the top ridiculousness. Wonderboy, Beelzebub, Training Medley etc.. are all so good because they’re written from the point of view from someone that’s serious about their craft.
Jack and Kyle put themselves into the headspace of being wizards when writing a song about a great wizard battle - as opposed to thinking ‘what would a wizard do?’ - they become the wizards themselves.
This ^
I want to see Jack Black being interviewed by Chris Jericho. XD
O
WONDERFUL
"Dude I totally miss you" is probably the most serious song the D ever wrote. even if Jack wont admit it, I think that one can hit you at the heart, even if it packs a ton of cheese.
Hollywood Jack and Wonderboy too.
Theres darkness behind the D.
Thank you, Jack Black, for so many smiles and such laughter into this world. They ask "why are you not a serious band"; we SERIOUSLY need your humor, and your heart is full of laughter. Thank you for sharing
I don't understand what is serious music, Zappa was serius even when the lirics were hilarious! Humor is an important part of music!
^This - I think Tenacious D is Zappa's spiritual successor more than they are Weird Al's
Tom Waits also has absurd lyrics in a lot of his songs and is considered "serious". I think it's just because Jack Black is a famous comedy actor that people take the band less seriously. If the D was all he did, then they would be a serious band that just liked absurd lyrics.
They are a band I love, that makes me smile and has vocal and instrumental talent... I don't really care how other people see their music, I love it and place it about what other people might consider a "serious band."
Honestly, what constitutes a "serious" band? Are comedies at the cinema not "serious" films? Do they not make a statement using stereotypes and contemporary issues in society in a satirical way?
Jack and Kyle are certainly jokesters, but the comedy in their music, the lyrics that seem to be sung "as I go", and the sometimes inane subjects, all add up to an experience that can be compared to having a conversation with a friend, rather than going to see an artistic performance. Yes we hear a lot about sex and dicks and fast food and religion and weed, but guess what, that's the kind of stuff most people think about most of the time.
When you first hear Tenacious D, yeah, it's funny. But you do like the music, and after a while, it's like having a friend tell you a cool story, or watching a comedy that you know by heart, but that still gives you that cozy feeling.
satirical maybe
That's the most pretentious thing I've ever good damn read
I think his meaning is the opposite, it's pretentious to think comedies are not "serious."
Yargk Some aren't.
You think Dumb and Dumber is supposed to be serious? lmao
"Theres not enough Tinatious Ds"
I think that all the time
Devin Wordell English, it's a wonderful thing
"There's not enough Tenacious Ds"*
@@JohannesVanDerStuyvebode Tinnitus D, that's what you get after standing to close to the stage at a Tenacious D concert.
Jack Black looks posh af in black and white.
IMO - the line between parody and "real" music is in intentions, descriptions, marketing, and many aspects of the whole. In the music itself, however, there is no line, it is a gray area that pretty much encompasses all music. I understand what Jack is saying, it's his music, he says it is conceived and presented as comedy, then it is so. But as a musician and a fan of The D. and many other styles and artists, I have to call attention to the fact that parody music is every bit as good as "real" music, for example, Tenacious D., Dewey Cox, Spinal Tap, The Mighty Wind -- all great music...now the other side, Bowie, Boy George (who I just saw Jack perform and awesome version of Hello I Love You with - inc. Robby Krieger), Marilyn Manson, Lady Gaga, Kiss, Elton, Rammstein, Liberace, Prince, (the list is very very long)...these are a very few examples of "real" musicians who's act is so over the top as to completely blur any lines. I guess I'm trying to say that Jack and Kyle's parody (and performance) is so musical, and so many great musician's music (and performance) is so "over the top" that it is not unlike parody, that the line disappears. I'm not going to fix my rambling sentences. I can't form this into coherent thoughts at the moment I guess ;o) - hope someone understands what I'm trying to say ;)
totally
in France we had a band of 3 comedians in the 90's that made comedy (of course ^ç^) but also parody songs ... and damn those songs are still great today! (and back then were even better than the originals (so not to mention tehy're also better than today's shit))
+David Miller
and how is that relevant to the topic? ... wait ... it ain't
so please go spread your dumb hate somewhere else (like on a highway for instance ;))
I love when talented people do what makes them happy, and they are successful at it, instead of having to conform and be miserable.
"not enough tenacious D's" indeed.
As a lifelong TD fan, I love their stuff because of the talent, and it's goofiness.
They're unique in what they do, and it's amazing.
Adding clown powder to corn sauce creates magic.
Honestly tenacious D is a serious band to me. They got some true bangers, and Dude I totally miss you is a right masterpiece
I think the sad truth is that Tenacious D could have worked as a "serious" band if Jack and Kyle were this age in like... the 70's.. where this kind of rock music was regularly topping charts. Today's music industry and the kind of music the mainstream, average listener craves is all one of a hundred different variations of pop music, and its been pretty much that way since the 80's. If they wrote "serious" songs they'd have a following, for sure, but I don't think they'd ever top charts like people think or hoped they would... that's sadly not the reality of the music world we live in today... but once you add in that "clown powder" that Jack refers to, suddenly it becomes something more than just an awesome metal inspired cover band, it actually elevates their music, performance, and stage presence, at least in our modern world.
But yeah sure, if Tenacious D was writing and playing hits around the same time as the original greats, they'd have easily been considered gods of rock like Ozzy or Zeppelin, no doubt.
Well The Ballad of Hollywood Jack and the Rage Kage was a really emotional song, they can do serious if they want to and it turns out amazing
Tell you what though "off camera" is probably the stupidest name to call a video of any kind. Not to mention a series.
ManyPerspectives word. my thoughts exactly
I thought it was clever, since they're interviewing people who are often on camera in a more casual way, but it actually is on camera, so it makes it funny.
Is it stupid or did you miss a joke?
Jack Black makes terms up on the fly and i’m here for it.
"There's not enought Tenacious Ds". How right you are Jack.
You can take a not serious band seriously. I mean I do- it's legit songwriting, production, and performance. Not to mention how good they both are at what they do. Jesus Ranch and Warning are the killer combo, they never get old. I'm not saying you should see them as geniuses, I just think they need to be appreciated just a little more.
His straight face when he says “hot blast of cheese” hahahahaha
HAHAHA I had a SCIENTOLOGY ad before this HAHHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA I guess Imma scientologist
Why does his weird vocabulary make so much sense... lmaooo
Rize of the Fenix was a fantastic album.
I love his voice. i love school of rock
That's what makes them great, pure uniqueness
I'm glad he clarified that he wasn't ripping Pearl jam lmao
And very cutely I might add
Do whatever works for you...its doesn't matter what people think..
The comedy fan in me feels so vindicated by this. Music fandom always seems so self-righteous; it's therapeutic to watch JB tell off this self-important d-bag with "Uh, yeah, it's more important for us to do comedy"
ohp droped my corn sauce
He hit it right on the nail. “There’s enough serious bands. There’s not enough Tenacious D’s.” I’ve always noticed that about them. Tenacious D has always stood out and that’s a real band. All of these bands are the same. They’re the meaning of rock n roll to me, to say fuck it and be themselves. “We’re that band at school that no one listens to”
on: Ronnie james dio: this is your life; tenacious d does a great job of covering "last in line". I have a couple other tenacious d albums. I almost fall off my bicycle when the rest of the songs shuffle thru my phone. this is your life is a Ronnie james dio tribute album. tenacious killed last in line. its one of the best covers on the album.
Parents keep your kids off clown powder... it ruined my life.
I think tenacious d is serious music
Sometimes I don’t feel like missing someone or being in love
Sometimes i just dont want a hear those motivational lyrics
Y just want to “f*ck yoyo ma “
Tenacious D is to rock what Steel Panther is to 80s metal.
Tenacious D and Steel Panther are all I need
They need to tour together.
The world would be in perfect harmony
Fuck yeah.
Eric Neuls You should listen to Spinal Tap, they influenced both bands.
There's a lot of great bands that play serious music, but not many bands that can do what Tenacious D do.
Their music is phenomenal.
*thur
without the clown powder, we would have never had The Metal. and without The Metal. . Metal \../
This is so dumb. It's like asking a stand up comedian why they don't have any more serious bits.
Haha, exactly !
I wouldn't say so. Stand up comedy is a pretty common thing, music comedy is not. Tenacious D are quite a unique band, that's why people are gonna ask why they are not "normal", like everybody else.
B Rad it's not like that
Carlin had some serious bits. No one took them seriously, but they will when all the food is extinct and we have to resort to eating each other. Then we'll see who gets the last laugh!
You say that like stand-up doesn't seriously face real and current topics
"Why don't you guys make serious music?"
"You don't think I take my music seriously?"
Theres a million serious bands, there is only one D
I could totally have imagined him doing some type of cool Pearl Jam singing in School of Rock.
I'd love to be in one of those "more Tenacious D's"
He had to stop himself saying 'clown sauce' and changed it to 'clown powder'
Holy shit. Perhaps without acknowledging it, that “because we’re not” is as deep and as motivational as one of those spiritual speeches we all have heard and tried to interpret. That’s awesome, thank you!
Jack has seriously tasty rock voice and he is talented.
Tenacious D will never be a serious band because all of there music is based on rock cliches, it's not just the lyrics that are comical, it's the musical cliches they put in - you know they're coming, and you know when in the song they're coming, and that's what makes them funny to listen to.
"Melodramatic corn sauce". I NEED that album.
Same with Steel Panther lol
Because they would rather make original music that a few people like rather than shit out the same 'love story' garbage this world has heard a million times.
CORN SAUCE AND CLOWN POWDER
I love this dude. He would be able to handle whatever came his way.
I love the band just how it is. They are amazingly talented but I feel like they are making the type of music they were meant to make, like he said. Can you imagine an alternate reality where they never made songs like Tribute, but instead more serious songs? I'm so glad they made that song and all the others
Damn it.....I gotta get me some clown powder.
Sam Jones is constantly like - Right....right *looks weirdly away '* right... *awkward chuckle '*............... :|
Fuck yeah Jables!!!!
....because no one would take them seriously?
And then you hear the cover of Last In Line and you realize that there's an unbelievable untapped potential within the band. I can understand though.
Mmmmm.... melodramatic corn sauce... aaaaarrgggghhh
The brilliance of The D is that, musically, KG and JB are really really good. For me, the comedy comes from the seriousness and talent with which they play their silly, yet genius songs.
Doing something absurd in a totally serious way, or doing something serious in a totally absurd way. You’ll always find comedy.
hot blast of cheese
There are plenty of amazing "serious" bands. Maybe what we need to respect more is a unique comedic band.
Comical metal or heavy cometal
I consider the d's music to be serious.
So many nights spent jamming to their albums. So much enjoyment.
If the music hits, it hits.
It's a serious comedy band
clown powder
Two of my favorite bands are Tenacious D and Spinal Tap. Don't sell yourself short just because your music has cheek, Jack. 'Tribute' is pure genius.
2:17 , 2:20 , 2:24 haha I feel like the host was trying to find an argument to convince Jack from making that serious record xD
Couldn't agree more with Jack. There is enough "serious" bands. Tenacious D are amazing what they do so there is no reason they should do something else entirely
theres enough serious band, but not enough tenacious D's.. DAMN SON
Sean Penn, "why aren't you a serious band?"
Jack Black, "why aren't you Jim Carrey?"
Tenacious D is just a regular band....
Jack Black is amazingly hilarious my god
Mumbling Eddie is NOT a master of anything. Famous...yes. Master...no.
"Uh..why don't you play serious music?" As opposed to being the the greatest rockin' band in the universe?
I was a radio announcer when Tribute came out. I knew that song was going to be big, so I played it as much as I could. Joke song or not, that song rocks!
Music is best when it's genuine. Jack Black and Kyle Gass wrote music that genuinely expressed who they are as people. They are goofy kids. They are not Kurt Cobain or Eddie Vedder. That's why their serious song sounded goofy. It's just not who they are.
I don't want any other Tenacious Ds. I only want this Tenacious D, and lots and lots and lots of them! Give me Jables and Kage, or give me death! ... No, better give me The D. Loads of, and a little extra Jack.
what? Tenacious D's songs aren't serious? They seem fucking serious to me. Seriously AWESOME!
Presidents of the USA, funny lyrics, unbelievable concert, great musicians and most important great music.
There’s no difference between Dr. Demento stuff (weird Al etc) Mr. bungle, Tenacious D and, supposedly, serious music. It’s all the same thing. Musically, it’s valid. And that’s all that matters.
‘Dude I Totally Miss You’ is a song that makes me cry when I hear it.
