I'm Haitian and grew up in New York City. In the early 1980s I had cousins who lived in Belgium and France, and when they came to visit me one Christmas ('83) I planned to amazed them with this NYC phenomenon called Breakdancing. Imagine how shocked I was when I saw they were better break-dancers than me!?! They even had European magazines about breakdancers!! I was embarrassed but I begged them to teach me some moves. We must have broken 3 lamps and 2 vases in my mothers living room apartment practicing break moves that Christmas holiday!!!!!! Great memories!!
Kuriaki had the COLDEST windmill. I mean... his windmill was FLAWLESS. In the break dance battle in Beat Street he always stood out to me... even before I knew who he was. Kuriaki just seemed a little better, more smooth, a little more polished than other break dancers. Kuriaki is a Legend.
Absolutely the truth! Sadly his contribution as a B-Boy has not been given the recognition it's due. He was by far one of the best if not the best B-Boy. And a very good friend of mine.
Over here in Scotland, you had a windmill AND a “Kuriaki”- reserved for those B-Boys who could do a windmill using only the power from your legs to flip you, instead of your hand as you rotate across your front...
@@nycboy121 unfortunately Latinos in the US are forgotten people! It's always Black & White! There is never any mention of Latinos and the contributions they have made to America and American culture!
I started Breaking in the late 70's thru the early 90's, and that's because of the Rock Steady Crew. I built my style around Kuriaki and Buck 4. By doing so I had a ridiculously fast windmill and turtle. Even though I didn't think so, a lot of people in Columbus Ohio felt that I was the best in Columbus. I owe it all to Kuriaki and Buck 4. Thank you for existing and my peace be upon both of you.
This is a tribute that is well deserved, I'm 53 yrs old now but was a breaker n popper in the 80's and Kuriaki's legacy can not be overstated as although tragically taken from this world far to soon, thankfully through Beat Street in particular showed the world his skill and talent as a breaker is recorded as one of the greatest contributors and inspirations to making what is now an established and recognized worldwide form of dance, that also now has become a technical discipline worthy of inclusion in the Olympic Games! Hi, I read alot about Lorenzo, nice guy, I also read alot, dig deep, on his untimely passing....regarding why Legs won't ever speak of him, and how Legs gave up his location
@@brianglade848 hey Brian....yes that sadly is a rumor of which I cannot confirm. When Kuriaki was gunned down I lost contact and came back to the neighborhood about 2 weeks or so after his murder. I have not some with Legs since but that was the rumor circulating since that time. And Legs has never, that I know of, confronted it.
Kuriaki was the top man of B-Boys in the 80's, I can recall the windmills being the hardest to achieve. Everybody had their own move they was good at. Back in them days the young generation of Hip-Hop was taking the world by storm. Scratchers, burners, poppers, top rockers, breakers. New crews forming and challenging each other. The moves were so difficult to accomplish in them days. If your moves was of high standard you was soon recognized and word soon went round. When Beat street came out in 1984 the Rock Steady crew and New York City breakers were on top of their game, being know as the best in the world. Kuriaki's windmills were so flawless and so smooth. Watching this tribute you can see how advanced the man was of his time. He was just so awesome. B-Boys of today who have become so advanced over the last 30 years when watch this tribute should respect the era and respect Kuriaki how breakin was back in them days. RIP Kuriaki "windmill king"
I knew Kuriaki was dope but man, as far as 80s power goes he had it all. That one armed entry into windmill is sick. Really too bad that he died so young which then led to there not being too much footage of him, I could watch a 30 minute clip of this stuff. Who was the Rams player, Jack Youngblood? My man was lit like a Christmas tree. RIP Kuriaki and Buck 4, legends never die.

Respect from Ireland....
I wonder what he would be like if he lived, and what he was like back then. He seemed like a really sweet lovable boy with a great smile. One of hip hop's great pioneers. Forever a Legend
he would have been seen as a total legend nowadays I think as he was way ahead of his time back in the early 80s...he was easily the best bboy in RSC and one of the originators of the so called powermoves...
Rest In Peace Kuraki a Legend

I grew up watching this guy on beatstreet and then we would go get some card board and lay in on the sidewalks in philly and practice his moves. Sad to just find out about his passing! Legends never die! Rip!
