    Just want to say, some of my favorite UA-cam channels also take breaks during the winter, whether that be just Christmas through the new year, or the whole month of December. You are absolutely right, your family, your farm and job, are both vastly more important than uploading. You also have a much busier time in winter I'm sure than some other types of channels. Basically, don't worry about it. You don't owe us anything.

    I regularly see wild chickens in the jungles of SE Asia. They always roost very high in the trees, except when they are brooding. My bantams at home roost every night and the mothers hens encourage their chicks to roost as soon as they have wing feathers.

    Thanks for answering my question on ventilation and moisture, I really appreciated the time to explain it in those terms and making the question about smell that I didn't express, also answered in there too. I never thought of ashes for a dust bath. I am learning some great things from your gifts of sharing videos, thank you for service and sacrifice ( from the Book of Mormon: 17 And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.) I think that roosts in the chicken tractor could be a good thing for me. We can get a lot of rain, and chickens hate to stand in water. I will obviously have to move them to steeper, dryer terrain if we get heavy rain, but the weather can change really fast some times.

    • @simeonandalex
      @simeonandalex  7 років тому +2

      Yes, that would be a pro of roosts in the chicken tractor. The con for me is that if they sit on the roosts they will not cuttle up and stay warm in early spring when it is cold at night.

    • @frodehau
      @frodehau 7 років тому +1

      I don't think it would be responsible of me to start as early as you do because we have so much wind and rain here on the south west coast of Norway. That weather is a really bad combination for chickens.
      Ducks are a much better fit for me, but I think the market is a lot smaller.

    • @tulipsmoran5197
      @tulipsmoran5197 7 років тому

      You wouldn't put roosts in a tractor but in their sleeping house.

    • @frodehau
      @frodehau 7 років тому +1

      Tulips Moran The style of tractor that Simian use doesn't have a 'sleeping house'. But I have been thinking about doing that. A mobile coop and fencing instead of tractors. No floor inside.

  • @blackwater4707

    The best thing I ever did for my chickens was put a roof over their run. It is bone dry and even though I let them out to forage and moonscape the garden, their run never smells. The coop does not smell either but I manage that differently. Honestly, there is a lot of information behind how the deep bedding system works. If people don't understand that they should do some research, not expect you to justify and explain everything.

  • @adelalukacova7982
    @adelalukacova7982 7 років тому +1

    Inspired by your video about deep bedding I have applied for my chick in the greenhouse during the winter. It works very good. My husband was sceptic and expected bad smell inside, he didn´want to believe me. Now he is very good surprised, other fan of deep bedding :-)

    Coming from Midwest from family of Ranchers/Farmers, chickens have roosts. I've not seen any deformation of any kind in chickens roosting. Their nature is to "roost" in trees. Perhaps your experience with your chickens is a product of long cold winters. However here in Midwest US the predator threat would be very high on chickens or any birds that did not roost.

    • @battles146
      @battles146 5 років тому

      not sure what area of the "midwest" you live in, however most of my mother's side of the family were farmers in the saginaw valley area in michigan - most of whom raised many chickens in addition to their other livestock - we never had chickens that roosted in trees and preferred to roost in their chicken sheds and under it during the warm weather - any chicken here that attempted to roost in a tree would be food for owls and hawks - but then maybe your chickens were of a different breed that were capable of flying high enough ????

    Whould you mind to give temperature at the beginning of each video? Maybe just onscreen text of temp and humidity. I am trying to compare my north shore oneida lake,ny climate to yours. Btw we get alot of snow and winter is nearly a 5 monrh event. Most other homesteaders aside from lumnah acres are in much warmer climates.
