Funny you said "that's kinda Florence" because Florence + The Machine were Ethel's favorite band growing up and she performed with Florence in stage multiple times and they got a song together
I absolutely love hearing people's thoughts on this album. Preachers Daughter was the first piece of Ethel's music that I listened to. It's like a gateway drug to her entire discography. There's this quote about art about how it's supposed to "disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed" and she embodies that 100%. She is bringing something so special and unique to music right now. But yes there is Ethel Cain Lore lol. Briefly, Preachers Daughter is the story of Ethel Cain's death from start to finish. Ethel Cain is a stage name used by Hayden Adhedönia and more importantly, Ethel is a character in a much bigger story. Hayden has confirmed that she wants to write an album for Ethel's mom (Preacher's Wife) and her mother as well. She's also huge into cinematography and eventually wants to adapt the ECU into movie(s). If you look further into the lore, most of what is relevant to know comes straight from Hayden. She's very active online and talks about the lore often in interviews. Ultimately tho, this album is a masterpiece whether you have it or not but, it does add some context lol
The preacher speaking at the beginning of the first and last songs is actually Ethel’s father speaking at her grandmother’s funeral. They bookend the album by first talking about motherhood and ending talking about death and eternal life.. family and religion. I can’t wait for The Preachers Wife and The Preacher’s Mother… a trilogy that will explore religious and multi-generational trauma
i have lovedddd this album for a long time but just recently i did a proper deep dive for a UA-cam video and the story is just astounding. she is so incredible!
August underground is when Ethel’s character is dying and Televangelism is when she’s ascending into ‘heaven’. Def look up each song’s meaning! It’s a whole story that flows. Gives you a whole new perspective. Loved your reaction though!!
i’m laughing so bad at “is there lore 😤” LMFAOOO check through all the genius annotations & you’ll understand more, you got the grasp of things though!!!

I was there, I’m not good or evil, simply I am - it’s DEATH

I need you to go back to genius for the last song and read the meaning of the lyrics for me cause I feel like something major jumped over your head 😭
After my initial listen I went back and did a deeper dive into the story, so I definitely understand it more now!
