This dude's a real one for just giving us the answer to our question in like the first 30 seconds.
I've been wondering about this for years and I found out all about it in literally a minute
For real. Another guy started by telling us how some guy pissed on his shirt and cleaned a stain
From another era lol. This would be a 12 minute video normally on UA-cam with the same amount of information and an add for a nut trimmer.
The cameraman went crazy with this piece. “Let’s put a camera here, let’s put it in there, here press this camera”
I gotta admit the coverage on this piece was pretty entertaining for a really mundane topic.
I don't want this man touching my clothes unless he can personally guarantee that he will smell them with the same joy and enthusiasm he had for the jacket in this video.
drycleaners have high rates of kidney cancer due to occupational exposure to perchloroethylene, I don't think he or any of his workers should be smelling these clothes
I wouldn't want him smelling my clothes. Only me can smell my clothes!!!
Feels creepy n eew.
lmao. This man LOVES his job. Who gets that excited over laundry? bless his heart =)
Prince Blake He’s the head chief and you know he’s making good money. That’s why he loves it. He is at the top of the operation. Every business owner takes pride in their business even if it’s laundry.

They actually put a camera in the machine so we could see it bounce around lmao so immersive
Lol they call it organic because hydrocarbons are made up of only hydrogen and carbon. Not because "it comes from the Earth". They are using the word as a chemistry term.
Kathy's Chinchillas well by definition it’s a term from organic chemistry.🤔
It's illegal for them to say Organic now. Carbon is fuel from the earth

In Russian this process is called "Chem cleaning" as in chemical cleaning, which is a lot less misleading than Dry cleaning.
In Serbian we say
Hemijsko čišćenje ( Чишћење ) = Chemical Cleaning
Lemme guess... sounds similiar in Russian am i right?
The word Čišćenje in russian would be written to sound something like ( Чищенье ) if that makes sense? Xd
i mean...the term is misleading...i guess? but its entirely benign. there are only extremely niche cases in which the difference would come up. largely revolving around someone leaving something in their pockets. but even then there's a good chance it'd be taken out before hte actual cleaning so...
he has great energy and he definitely loves his job...
I wish everyone could enjoy their work as much. He's a lucky guy.
"Dry cleaning isn't actually dry"

It is dry. Dry is always with respect to water, atleast is chemistry. And this is totally the domain of chemistry.
Always wondered about this. Good explanation.

When I was a child, my aunt and uncle used to own & operate a dry cleaners in Brooklyn where we lived. Thanks for explaining the mystery to me as to what they were doing down there!
I actually work at a dry cleaner. Our process is a bit different but the actual dry cleaning is the same. It's pretty fascinating...
Can a mountaineering 60L backpack be washed by dry cleaning? It has a hard back and I don't think I can fold it to make it fit into a washing machine.
Would you recommend dry cleaning for vintage black concert tour shirts? Im beyond paranoid about fading. A lot of the shirts I’ve bought for the second time in my life, might not be as easy to find them a third time down the line so I’ve actually begun to consider dry cleaning for my shirt collection.
@@Bonanzaking did you find the solution to dry cleaning your black shirts? Hope you're kicking some ass
@@denverdanoreno the tabs on most of these shirts that have the garment care instructions appear to all have the no dry cleaning symbol. So I’ve pretty much resorted to hand washing and hang drying my collection.
This was one of the things I used to wonder about when I was a curious kid from the third world (there were a lot of "dry cleaning only" labeled salvage clothes). Forgot about it when I grew up and watching a movie just now triggered that old curiosity. Finding out nothing about it being dry was anti-climactic though.
The reason it is called "Dry-cleaning" is because the clothes go in dry and come out dry. Home washers are water and detergent based where clothes go in dry, gets wet, and comes out wet.
devdas Devdas I would guess it’s because some fabrics that are softer like silk and rayon can easily be damaged by regular washing and pressing.
devdas Devdas, yes. They use solvents. Kerosene is one. He implies he is using surfactants as well.
Jane Leelavathi This is not why. It is because it does not use water. Some dry cleaners don’t use a 2-in-1 process. Some dry cleaners take them out of the washing machines wet and transfer them to an actual dryer machine - just like most homes. Again, it’s because water is not used, but a solvent.
I love this guy. Not only is he a dry cleaner but he's also a good speaker
Smells delicious! (Eats shirt)
One of my first jobs in the early 2000's was as a front-end clerk at a dry cleaner's. I prepared orders in the computer, tagged the individual pieces, and sent them to those who worked the machines. When the clothes returned, I had to manually reassemble orders by searching through all the tags. The crinkled up, deformed, pain in the behind little tags. Then, bagged it up and put it on the front conveyer to wait for pick-up.
OMG, I am SO jealous of there being a handheld scanner now!
I love how basically everyone has heard of dry cleaning, but until clicking on this video, had no idea it was wet, myself included.
The organic solvent he’s talking about is called TCE. There’s another one I think called PERC. They’re the leading cause for contaminated soil and groundwater across the country. It’s carcinogenic. Practice used to be to take filters outside and hose them down with water to clean them. This became runoff into the local soil and waterways.
Perchlorate. Which is a shortened name for a chemical I can’t remember right now.
All these years of wondering but not caring enough to look it up...thanks guys.

Why not water? I never put something that says dry clean only in the wash but what happens if you do? Does it shrink?
Depends on the material. Like you wouldn't put a suit jacket in the wash because it would ruin the wool
i once contracted scabies from wearing a band uniform in college😔. they were supposed to be dry clean only. i suspect it hadnt been cleaned after the previous season\last game or maybe someone with scabies had tried on the uniform during fitting. idk.
after that happened, whenever they would give us our uniforms the evening before the game, i washed mine in the washing machine with cold water and regular detergent. the band uniforms are a thick, stiff fabric so it was just fine.
@@kaykay1kc BTW -- Scabies are tiny microscopic mites that bury themselves at the bottom of your hair follicles in the pores in your skin and they feed off of you and they excrete a chemical that causes you to itch your skin until it bleeds and these microscopic bugs multiply as fast as lice do! Believe me, you're never gonna want to have to deal with something like that. It's a nightmare! And it can become dangerous because the severe itching can turn into an impetigo infection! And, then that can get into your bloodstream and you can die from it!
@@kaykay1kc I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm sure it must have been very traumatic and something that you'll never forget. It wasn't anything that you caused. I would have just asked my parents to buy me a new one that's never been worn! And, hearing what happened to you, which is just horrible -- I think that it's best that each student who's joining the band to purchase their own!

I run a dry cleaners.. solvent is highly toxic, first rule when dry cleaning is you do not leave that door open as the emissions of solvent can cause dizziness, sickness and in extreme cases death. The fact he smelt them AS soon as they came out shows me he probably doesn’t dry clean himself but managers the store which is fine but smelling it after etc is just so toxic. The machine completely soaks the clothes in solvent which then heats up and the remaining solvent is vaporised. The dry cleaning machine is really smart and if business insider wants a look at dry cleaning further I’m sure Timpson or Johnson Cleaners would be happy to give an in-depth view on how it all operators and how it’s run!☺️
Totally agree with the comment under me but for some reason after 33 years of living I had a absolute wild hair up my @ss today to the urge to look up andwatch/ see this process of dry cleaning..

I'm a Millennial so I've never dry cleaned anything, but when my Nana took in her blouses I always thought it was some sort of powder they "sprayed/soaked" it in like dry carpet cleaning.
I am a more well-rounded person after viewing this.
You've never dry-cleaned anything? Not even a suit? Not criticizing, just didn't know that millennials don't use dry cleaning.
@@animalblundetto8440 Yeah, I know. I'm so ashamed. 😉 I just haven't ever been in a circle of people that wear suits (besides the few in church). And when I look around, it's typically those that are 40+ years old that are picking up dry-cleaning. Are you Gen. X?
Older millennials are now pushing 40, so there's certainly a subset of the group who could be using dry cleaners. I'm one and I have used it a few times (but was never a regular, mind you).
@@silvasilvasilva Yes, though I am being facetious. People enjoy the humor that revolves around a Millennial being somewhat of a dunce, or underachiever (I'm sure you're quite aware of it, being a millennial yourself).
As for age actually being related to dry-cleaning: Those that dry clean typically need it for special occasions. Those attending formal events, on a regular occasion, are probably in the "upper class" sector of society. And it typically takes you until your 40s to reach that upper class sector (typically).
*We will eventually be the "Boomers" dry cleaning our clothes and Gen Z will marvel at this video. Circle of life.*
@@MyFortressConstruction Only too well! But this "social" phase can even happen earlier: For many people, there's a point in your late 20s to early 30s when all of your friends will be getting married, so dry cleaning is the way to go to keep using the same few "occasion" pieces over and over again (where I'm from, you don't expect guests to spend as much for a wedding as I know to be the case in the US, for example).

I bought this dry cleaning at home kit, where you put you spray the problem areas of your garment with a solution. Then you put the garment in a bag with wet dry sheet like cloth and put it the dryer. I thought this was how clothes was dry cleaned, since it is technically dry. Since I had the at home version, I hardly get stuff dry cleaned at the Laundry mat. Very interesting to learn it’s placed in a solution and maybe it’s good to get it done professionally!
The at home kit is still great for in-between professional cleaning and for items not worn on the skin, like wool coats. Dry cleaning is expensive on the regular.
Thank you for the thorough and concise explanation. I just got a great deal on a very expensive suit, now I feel relieved to know that the dry cleaning process also sanitizes laundry.

I don’t think the guy in the video is informed - he said the chemical is called organic because it comes from the earth. How stupid is that. Any high school chemistry student knows organic means the compound is carbon based.

There are home dry cleaning kits that you can buy online. Idk how good they are though
It’s a bunch of carcinogenic, nasty chemical solvent. Not something you can exactly just run through your domestic washing machine. Half of the appeal of dry cleaning is that you skip all of these laborious steps anyways. You simply drop off the dirty stuff and walk away with the clean.
