As someone who grew up in that era, I can assure you that the Beatles represented a style no one had ever heard before. They exploded out of the radio, sounding completely unique. By taking the best of R&B, skiffle, rockabilly, Motown girl groups, and putting it all together in a fantastic new way, they changed pop music forever.

Agreed. One thing that is generally missed by reactors to the Beatles is the music "environment" in which they appeared. Just take a listen to some of the UA-cam videos of top songs in the years leading up to the Beatles and you can see how different they were. Songs don't exist in a vacuum -- you have to consider the time frame and the world around them to get a proper perspective. I'm convinced that so much new music appeared in the 60s and 70s because of the general unrest caused by the Vietnam War, the racial inequalities and subsequent demonstrations. They weren't just restricted to the U.S. -- it happened worldwide. As things calmed down the music seemed to stagnate -- fewer good bands and good music.

@@hurricane1951It was also generational change. The music-buyers are those between childhood and marriage/kids.
And if one goes back and listens to the music of 1962-63 it was stagnant, moribund. Major Lance, as example, had two dance song hits about the "Monkey". The music for both was exactly the same -- the only thing "different" were the lyrics.
And Chubby Checker's last hit was the Gadawful "Hooka Tooka". And then there was that screechy "French Nuns" thing.

Totally disagree, that is a Beatle rookie mistake. Paul's Am-Em template which he started on Things We Said today, set the table for a hundred melancholy rock songs to follow, Eleanor Rigby? Yeah, that's light. You cannot pigeonhole the Fabs. John's great upbeat songs are too numerous to name.

Glad you noticed the cover. Back then it was VERY different from the typical cover of a pop music band. And, sure enough, this is the first cover the group had direct input on.
There was a lot of cross pollination going on in those days. Back to the cover --
"Impressed with Robert Freeman's black-and-white pictures of John Coltrane, Epstein invited the photographer to create the cover image.[10] Harrison later said that, whereas the cover of Please Please Me had been "crap", their second LP was "the beginning of us being actively involved in the Beatles' artwork ... the first one where we thought, 'Hey, let's get artistic.'"[11] The group asked Freeman to take inspiration from pictures their friend Astrid Kirchherr had taken in Hamburg between 1960 and 1962, featuring the band members in half-shadow and not smiling.[12] To achieve this result, on 22 August 1963, Freeman photographed them in a dark corridor of the Palace Court Hotel in Bournemouth, where the band were playing a summer residency at the local Gaumont Cinema.[13] To fit the square format of the cover, he put Starr in the bottom right corner, "since he was the last to join the group. He was also the shortest".[14] McCartney described the result as "very moody", adding: "people think he must have worked at [it] forever and ever. But it was an hour. He sat down, took a couple of rolls, and he had it."[13] The original concept was to paint the picture from edge to edge, with no bleeding, title or artist credit - a concept that went against music industry practice and was immediately vetoed by EMI. The first album to carry an edge-to-edge cover was the Rolling Stones' self-titled debut, released five months later.[15] EMI also objected to the fact that the Beatles were not smiling; it was only after George Martin intervened, as head of Parlophone, that the cover portrait was approved.[15] "

The Beatles were ground breakers in that they not only wrote their own songs, but just as importantly they played the instruments as well, to this point that had not been done in pop/rock music. Obviously they went on to be trend setters in many other areas too, clothing, hair style, willingness to change their music from album to album, usage of different instruments and orchestration, and on and on. Excellent insight as always, Syed.
There's a song on the "Sgt. Peppers" album called "Getting Better" that was mostly Paul's creation. He had a line, "it's getting better all the time " that needed a response line, to which John added, "it can't get no worse". That says everything about the Lennon & McCartney ying and yang dynamic you spoke of.
Paul was lighter; John was darker.
John was more of a risk taker; Paul kept the band more true to their roots.
Paul was more steady; John was more eccentric.
The Beatles were John Lennon's band. He gathered the members and was a natural leader that the other 3 looked up to. After the halfway point of the band's recording career, Paul gradually became slightly more dominant as a song writer as John's interest began to fade. Paul, however, was not John's equal as a leader, and Paul caused friction with George and Ringo as he became more dominant.
The biggest influence on the Lennon / McCartney partnership was each of them on the other. Neither of them would have become as great creatively without the inspiration and healthy competition they provided each other.
On a personal note: John and Paul were both geniuses as song writers, but Paul was more likely to write a song I didn't care much for, and John was more likely to write a song I loved. It could be because of what's called "the tortured artist effect". John was more open in expressing his emotions, so he was easier for me to relate to.

Some of the difference can be understood by comparing their childhoods. Paul’ s family, though lower working class, stayed together and Paul had a pretty happy childhood. John’s parents had a difficult relationship and he suffered for it. After his parents split he was raised by his strict (but kind) Aunt Mimi. He missed his mother, Julia, who visited occasionally. When he was 17 Julia was struck by a car and killed which devastated John. Besides his darker moods John also had a more pressing need for a strong woman to fill the void of missing his mother. A lot of his music reflects that.

It Won’t Be Long is such a great album opener and All My Loving was the first song they played on their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show on February 9th 1964 which was when 73,000,000 people in the US tuned in to see The Beatles for the first time and from then on there was no stopping them. Obviously they were huge in Britain by then but we in North America had only just started to hear their music a month or two before that TV appearance and the hype before and after was huge. The British Invasion was on and we were all better for it. Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys Pet Sounds album were hugely influenced by The Beatles 1965 Album Rubber Soul which Wilson considered to not just be a collection of songs but a cohesive, artistic musical statement. Keep up the great work and enjoy your Beatles journey Syed as we enjoy your perspective and analysis too.

But "IT WON'T BE LONG" was NOT the album opener in the "MEET THE BEATLES" album in the U.S. It had the same cover photo, but the track listing was different from the UK "WITH the BEATLES" album. The OPEINING track on the U.S. MEET THE BEATLES was their first hit single in the U.S. "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND," followed by "I SAW HER STANDING THERE" (which was on the UK "PLEASE PLEASE ME" album), then "THIS BOY," "IT WON'T BE LONG" was the 4th track on side one. The UK "WITH THE BEATLES " was not available in the U.S. then.

@@patticrichton1135 Capital Records messed with the original albums. The British releases all have 14 songs each which was mandated by law in the UK. I’m not from the US and I prefer and always refer to the original Parlophone releases because they were released with the songs and the order the Beatles intended. That was why It Won’t Be Long was placed first on the original album. Because it is such a great opening track.

But the black-and-white (see also "Revolver" cover, by Hamburg friend Klaus Voormann) was based on black-and-white photos by Hamburg friend Astrid Kirscher, which John said captured "the spirit of The Beatles".

The thought is, that you may need to go back a few years and listen to the music that everyone was listening to before the Beatles broke.
In the UK there was the supergroup of Cliff and the Shadows, the skiffle bands, plus the remnants of the rock roll and crooner eras.
The Beatles exploded onto the scene and was listened to almost everyone, as everyone listened to the radio, as many still didn’t have tvs in 1963.
The Beatles suddenly was everywhere, and almost every track of their albums were played on radio back then. Once the Beatles broke through, then many bands were signed up who were already gigging, like the Rolling Stones, The Animals and the Kinks, plus the other Mersey Beat bands from Liverpool, and loads more.
Today things are so different, it’s another era and another world, and honour to you that you are taking this journey trying to understand, even though you never can, although you will get a perspective of the development of the Beatles music, and that remarkable progression from 1965/66 and 67, when they changed everything and brought music into the modern era, which we still live in (musically speaking) today.

I remember buying With The Beatles quite a long time after I'd bought Please Please Me (this is going back to the late 80s and early 90s), and I was immediately struck by how "different" the original songs on With The Beatles were, especially considering they were written in 1963. They didn't follow the standard chord progressions or melody lines of most early 60s rock or pop, and there were even a couple of songs that I wasn't sure if I liked or not at first listen - they just weren't going where I expected songs from that time to go. The second album was the one that got the first serious (and sometimes over-the-top) reviews and commentary from older critics and journalists, eg. the "Aeolian cadences" and all that.

A good rule of thumb listening to The Beatles. Whoever sang the song, wrote the original, raw lyrics. It was Lennon and McCartney for a reason. They would work these raw lyrics together: syntax, meter, rhyme, etc. They uniquely were always open to each other's input. The music is The Beatles. Showing up with the lyrics and a very basic tune, the magic then took place, with every member adding their touches. George Martin was the conductor, using velvet gloves with his vast knowledge of instruments and sounds, answering their questions. The Let It Be documentary vividly shows the process at work.

‘All My Loving’ was not released as a single in the UK or the US. Nevertheless it reached number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964 due to people crossing the border to get it in Canada where it was released as a single, as it was in Australia. In those countries it was a #1 hit. It was also one of Lennon’s favorite McCartney songs.

The Beatles first single in the UK was released in 1962. All of the Beatles earliest hits in the US at the beginning of 1964 were released in the UK in 1963. The Beatles may have been aware of the Beach Boys at this time, but they were not among their influences. The harmonies you are hearing were influenced by the Everly Brothers.
Producer Quincy Jones complained that he couldn’t figure out how to classify the genre of music to which their music fit. This is because their music is its own genre, Beatles music. It is unique to them. No one else can really do it because it requires their unique genius to make it.

This was my first Beatles LP; their musical evolution was fascinating & had me rushing out to buy their next albums as soon as they were in the shops. There were always one or two tracks on each one that pointed the way, so to speak, & they were usually obviously Lennon style ones; as you say, darker, less straightforward, unhappier with life. The 2nd track - All I've Got to Do - is John comforting himself with a delusion about a girlfriend which he knows is really only wishful thinking. Which is pretty damn sad, & indicative of their increasing emotional range.
