Team John. Babymetal for life
I do understand what Simon felt. I was like "WTF!? What are you doing to my music!?!?!" when I first listened to early Babymetal songs. I was in rage - I have been a metalhead all my life.
But when I closely examined Babymetal, I found that their music is basically metal, they were a lot younger, no metal base and with pop dancers experience. But they don't get scared and run away from the dark-energetic-powerful metal music character. They embrace this music, put their unique elements and youth experience - they enrich the metal music.
Watching their video, performing "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" at Sonisphere 2014, I opened up and finally understand them.
Unlike the traditional heavy metal bands I know, where the musicians dive deep into the powerful tornado of metal, Babymetal is like surfing on the powerful wave of metal! And I finally started to enjoy their music. Language is not a problem since both English and Japanese are not my mother tongue, so I have to work on the translation to understand the meaning of every song anyway.
I don't focus on the differences, I focus on the same spirit of metal Babymetal brings: the over-whelming energy, the dark distortion and explosive beat of metal music.

I'm on Jon's side :D. Also, having been to almost 300 gigs (only 9 more to go) I can safely say Babymetal are in my top 5!! for sheer energy, adrenaline, tightness and overall craziness! They do the work of professional athletes just from the dance choreography, and leave the crowds completely drained by the end of it. The Kami Band are masterful musicians that can literally play ANYTHING on their instruments, plus.... come on, how could anyone NOT have a gigantic smile on their face seeing the adorable and talented trio smiling and having a great time, whilst working hard. It's pure genius in my opinion. On paper, mixing Jpop with Metal sounds like a DISASTER, but with how they execute it all, and not to mention the composition of the songs, it somehow not only works, but it excels! The heaviness is there, the polished instrumentation is there, the catchiness and clever melodies are there, the cuteness is there, the stage presence is there and the FUN is there.
I find that fun is missing from a lot of metal these days, aside from bands like Steel Panther and a few others. Look back at 80's metal for example (not necessarily just the hair bands) but metal in general back then. It wasn't just music, it was a PARTY. Babymetal brought the party atmosphere back in spades, and done something very fresh, new and remarkable in music. I've never seen anything like it in all my years on earth lol. Sure, there's been imitators and copycats since 2010, and fusing this stuff is more common now than when Babymetal started.
Jon, drag Simon to a bloody concert of theirs! And if you haven't seen one yourself, get ready for it. The only way to 'get it' if you're ever going to, is to see them live. The concept and music videos might not resonate with some people. The epic nature of their live shows (especially the big stadium gigs with all the bells and whistles) cannot be denied \m/. They're doing only Download, as far as UK dates so far (until more are announced soon hopefully).
The fact that you guys gave it a fair reaction and didn't just trash them for trashing sake has my upvote. It's not for everyone, just like any other band in the world. Some will like it, some will not. But to try to deny that they are a force to be reckoned with right now and grabbing global attention with their sheer talent would be foolish. Their live shows are god tier in terms of production and energy. The best I have ever been too. Respect to you guys for being honest and still giving them another try. kudos!

Definitely, that was my thoughts, and as a big anime fan, I love baby metal for basically making several awesome anime intros.
Dominic Pontin dude legit when I first listened to them I got hooked because it’s literally a combination of anime openings and metal, 2 of my favorite things.
I would recommend Sis Anger or Akatsuki (live is even better). Su-metal is an absolute treasure as a vocalist
So I'm Team John on this one. I was a Jpop fan for almost a decade before I started liking metal, so maybe i'm bias lol.

Team Jon for sure. When they played a music festival here a few summers back they had bigger mosh pits and more crowd surfers than bands like Trivium, Lamb of God, Gojira, etc. The backing band is 100% legit and whether you like their voices or not the 3 girls are non-stop energy and headbanging for the entire show.
I know how Simon feels about BABYMETAL cos I was the same as you when I first listen to there 1st album.
My first contact to BABYMETAL was Butch Vig's tweet about "Gimme chocolate!!"s official music video and it was shocking that Japanese are doing interesting and funny things again (I was bored to all music scene).
So I get HYPED and bought there 1st album, listened to it and got shocked again but in a bad way.
My impression was "OMG this is so childish and ANIME vibes all over it, f@#k I want my money back."
But few month later, I saw there LIVE fancam and I was blown away.
I forgot which video that was, but YUI-METAL's dance move was crazy and energetic back then, so it might be Year 2015's Rock in Vienna.
They were singing in Japanese, face acting and choreography that translate lyrics to audiences, and of course band sound that neutralize Anime-ish electronic sound, it was amazing.
Ever since then, I'm a big fan of them so maybe Simon may come to like them, too? Who knows. ;)

Team John all the way. I think you should listen to Ijime, dame, zeitai from babymetal, not sure that’s how you spell it but the voices are less intrusive and blended more smoothly in this song with a really epic vibe. I’m pretty sure you’d like it.
i get it...as a metal fan i kinda resisted babymetal at first but then i realized it was more about the show. i do enjoy the music and i saw them live in dallas, tx this past weekend. it was honestly a top five live metal show of all time for me and i've been to plenty...mosh pits and all. keep up the good work. love the videos. #teamjon

I love BabyMetal, but I come from a long background of Japanese culture and anime. I also love Heavy Metal so BabyMetal is two things that I adore smushed into one. The lead singer Su-Metal, is incredible and can sing her ass off. They are also killer live.

Well if you wanna react to more from Babymetal I'd highly suggest "Rondo of Nightmare Live at Budokan" if you wanna see a little more of the show they put on and the Live band that is just stellar.
Or Road of Resistance, Karate, Headbanger if you wanna go for official videos. Road of Resistance was made in collaboration with Herman Li and Sam Totman from Dragonforce. Headbanger is an older song from the first album that I really enjoy, and Karate was the first single from the 2nd Album.
Or for my absolute favorite song: Akatsuki. A beautiful metal-ballad that is Su sings solo.
Oh and I wanna say that I'm not a fan of "Distortion". That song just doesn't "click" with me.

@Jon: if Simon likes Dragonforce, get him to give Babymetal's Road of Resistance (Live in Japan) a try - it's written in cooperation with Herman Li and Sam Totman and features Su-metal in goddess mode demanding a wall of death as well as the girls getting a cult-like sing-along of the crowd.

I've always thought of Babymetal as a live experience, seeing them perform is incredible. After a while though it grows on you and you end up loving the singing, even if you didn't want to. I think some of Simon's point of view comes from thinking it's "uncool" to like Babymetal, so comes in with a bias from the start. Watch at least one live performance, preferably "Road of Resistance" to see if it changes your mind.
If you do more Babymetal i'd recommend Megitsune or Karate.
Wow, I like your video. I hope you can react to Akatsuki - BABYMETAL. Akatsuki can make you think about Gothic metal but it have more hoping and more loving or something like that.
It's hard to make a metalhead like BABYMETAL at the first time, but i think you will change your mind about this band. They're really awesome.
I'm a huge Babymetal fan and I'm the kind of guy that listened to Slipknot,Sepultura,Metallica,Anthrax etc. But something about their energy just captured me. Plus the music is really good. Sure it's not for everyone and if it's not for you that's cool.

Love the reference that after guitar hero your room goes up. After trying 1 month to get to 95% through fire and flames on hardest difficulty, I was seeing whole world moving down for whole week. I even dreamed the goddam button colors.

I used to hate the idea of Babymetal, back when they were the meme of Gimme Chocolate I shunned the idea three dancing Japanese girls could be in the genre of metal, however the second album and new songs I find absolutely phenomenal. I'd recommend songs they've done that are actually very musically complex like Tales of Destinies (very instrumentally driven) and Rondo of Nightmare (less musically complex but the vocals are very very nice on that). It's strange to say it, but their catalogue of music is more diverse than most metal bands and they're yet to release Album #3, which is quite impressive imo
There are really great tracks on the first album, too. That is, after all, the album which begins with _BabyMetal DEATH_ and ends with _Ijime, Dame, Zettai._

Great reaction guys. Team Jon for me! You should react to "Road of Resistance Live" on their official channel. That's the song that made me a Babymetal fan after a year of thinking they were just a silly (but fun) gimmick. The guys from Dragon Force helped write Road of Resistance, so Simon might actually like it. Also, Simon might like the live version of "Ijime Dame Zettai" on their official channel as well. I suggest you stick with live versions of their songs where you can, because most people agree they sound way better live.
I think the reason you might not care for the singing portion is because you dont know what they are saying. the reason i say that is because a lot of other heavy metals bands usually have 1 or 2 decent songs that have singing in it like this but its in english and it gives you more context to the song.
I think they're better off not knowing the meaning of the lyrics. Babymetal's lyrical content can be garbage at times. I'm thinking about "Song 4" in particular
razman257 You know the meaning behind that song? They're criticizing a popular and really feared japanese superstition about death, and turning it the other way, taking something "evil" and transforming it into something positive with fun lyrics and puns. It's actually a really clever way to do it.

I’m not even a metal fan, but I have heard of Baby Metal and was curious. This song came off as an anime opening, a video game track, a drum & bass EDM track (with a metal aesthetic), etc. I don’t think one needs a whole new genre to excuse the song, one just needs to come to terms with the singing on the hook aiming for a slightly different aesthetic.

I feel the same to. I was like "I like it because the riffs are sick and fast, but also somehow dislike it because of the vocals". Sometimes it can workout but only in some of their songs.
