I worked in pineapple fields as a teenager here in Hawaii. All the local workers used thermoses to prepare hot food for lunch hours later. You're talking 24/7 harvest operations, so 'lunch' could be in the middle of the night. This was in the mid 60's. A stainless steel thermos was a valuable item in those days. I have cooked this way at various times through my life.

Hi I did the steel cut oats in a little large mouth thermos. I also cook rolled barley for my 30 yr old mare the same way. I bring a gallon of water in a stock pot to a boil and dump 3/4 of gallon of the barley in pot, turn off heat, put lid on and place in a styrofoam box and stuff some old towels and put the styrofoam lid on. It's nice and ready for her the next morning. Thanks for this idea!

I am such a huge fan of alternative cooking methods that conserve fuel and water so I'm loving this video! After watching this you inspired me to thermos cook some oats with brown sugar, raisins and Chia seeds without using any fuel at all by using the solar heated water that I heat to boiling in my camp chair solar cooker. I also had gluten free elbow macaroni for lunch cooked in only an inch of water above the pasta which can be applied to cooking any type of noodles. Took less than 15 min. start to finish.

    • @RobertWitham

That sounds like a great oats recipe! Solar cooking is definitely something I want to try. Several people that I follow online have mentioned it recently and it sounds like something that I would enjoy.

Thank you for posting this! What a concept! Definitely will practice it! I remember my first camping, it was my birthday and the wind would not let my water boil to cook my oatmeal on the butane burner. Took forever, so I ended up starting a small fire w little scraps of wood to finish cooking! Then I had to deal with cleaning soot on the pan n my hands and fingernails!

Robert, Thank you for sharing your thermos cooking. I recently tried a cold cook method for oatmeal that is easy and virtually no work. It may not work for you, but I find it convenient. Place water and any spices or fruit and oatmeal in a resealable bowl. Seal and leave overnight. . Cooking required, less cleanup and breakfast is ready when I get up! Safe and Happy journey

If you use old fashioned oats, they don’t need soaking, or cooking. Place spices like cinnamon and fennel, powdered coconut, crushed walnuts, sesame seeds, etc. I add two scoops of “Lean”vanilla protein powder (has loads of vitamins and minerals in it), some powdered milk, and a tiny bit of salt. Mix the dry ingredients well. Add hot water. Stir and eat - meal will satisfy you for many hours. And full of fiber. Yum!

Joanne, I would think it might be ideal on that kind of a trip. The two big keys that I have found it using a high quality Thermos (or other brand) bottle to hold heat and pre-heating the bottle with boiling water for about five minutes before adding whatever you want to cook.

An alternate, but much similar method that I used in cyclo-camping using a methanol mini stove. First, boil one litre of water and make two cups of coffee. Next, use some more hot water into instant oatmeal with 1/2 bag of trail-mix (nuts and dried fruits). Cover the ceral (soup bowl) with your bread plate so it swells well ( about 5 min). Save the rest of the water by putting the pot into an insulated bigger pot (a tupperware lined inside/out with self-stick foam/aluminium about 1/2" thick ) . Don-t kill the flame. Toast some bread while sipping somme coffee. Have you cereals and toasts and when time comes to wrap-up and pack-up for the road, you still have enough hot water for a second cup of cofee while working. Cut the middle-man, the thermos! :)

Two quick notes on Thermos cooking should you decide to try. You want a good quality Thermos bottle (I have heard particularly good things about the Nissin brand of bottles) as the food needs to stay very hot to cook. The plastic models just don't cut it. The second important detail is to pre-heat the Thermos with boiling water for about five minutes before loading the food and liquid to cook. I recycle that pre-heat water for coffee usually :)

Just a little tip you might use is to make a cozy from reflectix for your thermos and it will keep it even warmer longer. I use this idea for my French press coffee pot and it keeps that second cup warm for me. ATB Louise

I don't do it as often these days, but I found it particularly convenient in a small vehicle like a minivan. It was also handy just around camp though as I could throw some steel cut oats in the Thermos and not have to spend a lot of time on preparation.

Thank you for the video! When our children were little I used to take whole wheat berries and crack them in a blender, then pop them into a thermos with boiling water and let them sit overnight. (cook while you sleep hahaha!) Wheat is a whole grain and takes a bit of time to cook so the slow thermos method was perfect. The next morning, breakfast was ready in a jiffy. Add in some butter, cinnamon and honey and the kiddos loved it. Will have to revisit that cooking method now that you have reminded me of it!

I have heard of cooking wheat berries in a Thermos, but have not yet tried. The steel cut oats are really easy with the Thermos though. I don't know that I would want to cook it on the stove because it takes so long, but with the Thermos I can prepare it ahead of time and eat whenever I am ready. Definitely a convenient way to eat healthier.

I have done this quite a bit. The best is to use dried food. I have a food dehydrator. Virtually anything that has been dehydrated cook fine in a thermos. For things that require milk, (like porridge, Knorr Sidekicks ) I use powdered whole milk. I even add powdered eggs and dried fruit in oats.

Coffee jar wrapped with a towel works fine. Pasta takes 15 minutes without preheat. Add pasta (broke in half) to jar, fill jar with boiling water, put the lid on tight, wrap the jar in a towel then set the wrapped jar in in a container to keep it upright. Salt to preference after draining excess water.

I know about the hay bale one. Apparently they used it years ago but I first read about it from Cold War nuclear fallout shelter literature. They basically heat the pot and food up to temperature and put it in a wooden box full of hay INCLUDING the top. Obviously the pot needs a lid. I think my mum mentioned my nana doing it.

I found the Thermos option quite helpful in a small vehicle especially during hot weather when I didn't want to run a stove inside for long but it was too windy/buggy/etc to cook outdoors. It does help with saving fuel too because it's just a matter of boiling water and then letting the hot water do its thing. I have seen the wonder bags and thought about trying them in the past, but the size kept me from trying.

I make my oatmeal, grits, and cream of wheat like this in the morning for work. I don't preheat and it's still warm/hot enough. I've done it the night before and the oats were still warm enough to eat in the morning, but I don't usually eat until maybe 3 hours after I leave out.
I've heard of people making rice and even stews with it, but I haven't tried. Would definitely preheat first making other foods.

Thanks for the thermos cooking demo Robert! Makes me hungry for some oatmeal this morning. Rice, quinoa, oatmeal and potatoes are not only extremely healthy, easy to prepare and clean up after, they are some of the least expensive foods you can buy. Not to mention easy to store as they require no refrigeration. Funny you mention the glycemic index, as many of us have to watch our blood sugar. Now before any of you tell me how bad carbs are for raising blood sugar, please watch some video clips on UA-cam by Dr. John McDougall and Dr. Neal Barnard. I have tried their eating recommendations and have both lost weight and lowered my blood sugar eating the aforementioned carbs. Seems the thermos cooking method will be perfect to cook these foods. Thanks again Robert. I always watch your videos first in my lineup of vandwelling youtubers!

    • @RobertWitham
      @RobertWitham  7 років тому +2

Thanks for watching! I first learned of the glycemic index a number of years ago, but it does seem to hold true for me. I am not diabetic (fortunately), but do have to use some care to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Quinoa and steel cut oats definitely work better for me than rice and rolled oats. (FYI, I'm not really a "foodie," but do try to exercise some care with my diet.) The Thermos works really well for me to cook quinoa and steel cut oats, and is really convenient in the van.

Love this video. You do you videos a bit different than other people in that you provide a lot of helpful detail. Gottlieb makes one of the very few good thermoses and it holds heat and cold for over 24 hours. Don't let the plastic exterior on the Gottlieb thermos fool you. :)
Love that you can cook the better Steel Cut oats.
I believe Quinoa is a complete protein. It has a nice mild nutty texture. I had a bag of it that I didn't use because I didn't know how to cook it in my home without a pressure cooker. Lol!
I like the coffee filter thingy you use. It's quick, easy, and tastes good. For the coffee connoisseur lover on the road check out the Aero Press (on Amazon). My entire family has them. It makes everything from Espresso strong and *flavorful* coffee down to a regular brew. And it's mechanical, inexpensive, and lasts forever.

Just subbed. Saw you on Bob's video. Just this morning I hard boiled eggs. I heat the eggs and water in a sauce pan w/ a bit of baking soda (peels better) to boiling, shut off the heat, cover and let sit. 15 minutes later, perfect boiled eggs. Same principle. I love your set up. Some day I will be out there, too. Collecting all the info I can.
