PC optimization is a complete disgrace. 4VRAM was enough for a long time to play decently. Now even with 6 the game doesn't even open. This is going too far and if today there is something that really changes the industry in this sense. We will be changing graphics cards every year because they are already becoming obsolete.
8GB VRAM has been a thing for 250$ GPUs way back in 2016 (RX 480). 4GB was the entry level in 2017. And the last major (RT) GPU to launch with less than 8 was the RTX 2060 -- six years ago. Even the rather crap RTX 3050 launched with 8. It's a step up, likely due to the raytracing, but not that severe. Of course, RX 7600 and RTX 4060 kinda cards should have 12GB by now. If RTX 5060 and RX 8600 still have 8GB a decade after the RX 480, people should boycott them.
i mean its 2025 almost, the real issue is nvidia doesn't put enough Vram on gpus to make you upgrade sonner. The fact that we may still have a 8gb 5060 its crazy.
Still though, it is not possible that games like Cyberpunk, which although it came out disastrously, are currently better optimized than all the games of this year, even with Path Tracing is just a simply master peace. There are no excuses to allow this, even at the game purchase level.
I've had this game installed and ready for the last 3 days, so that I could play this as soon as it launched... Thanks for the 6GB VRAM on my 3060 laptop Nvidia.
@NoSpamForYou iirc, it had the same number of cores as the 2060S, but the 192 bit bus from the 2060, so it was actually a slightly different configuration, not just larger memory modules. I've seen those 22GB 2080 Tis people have made, so if you can desolder the memory and replace it, that'd probably work, but a lot of effort!
I was so ready to play this on my 1080ti, I swear I saw it in the hardware requirements before launch. NOPE.... I have a RTX 2060 that needs a repair but now I am less excited to repair it for this game. Thanks for the upload.

It works on steam deck with 7.5gb vram consumption tho. It is weird that game restricts itself only to vram and see no use of spare ram, so vram-less AMD APUs actually have better compatibility
It's a limitation of vulkan api. Doom Eternal had similar issue that even if you miss like 100mb of VRAM it will just crash while most of other games would continue working without problems.
For some reason NVIDIA app dozen pick up this game automatically despite with the latest driver. You need to add the the game executable file manually and then it will launch. But still you should respect the minimum requirements as stated. This workaround won't guarantee you will get very playable experience despite low textures and shadows in all places however. So if anyone just finished the game with 6GB, please confirm that so others will aware that 6GB is definitely not "dead".

@@emanuelefusco4466 If the game can’t even run at the lowest settings on modest hardware then its poorly optimized. Optimization techniques have been lost to time. It's obvious, how can some Devs get a game like gears of war running on an Xbox 360? There is nothing special you can do to get it to run on that hardware, so the designers designed their art style around the hardware. A good analysis is silent hill, using the fog to hide mesh load in, that camera distance from the player is to hide horrible geometry. Modern video game graphics have gotten to a point which we live in a luxury that particles can use individual light sources, realtime shadows with color blending shadows, subsurface scattering (where light shines through objects), all at the low quality preset. But with this, becomes a complex process which why people like game developers have jobs in the game industry. They are essentially the people who know how to optimize 3D graphics and code to let you run the game at low settings and not notice a major difference in fidelity. They usually just tack on the extra graphics presets for the long term for when hardware can eventually run it and it's just us turning on postfx options and engine features. The developers (tech artists) came around because at the time when video games were very indie and new, they were already optimized for the very harsh low power hardware but as tools became more easier and less archaic to use, the more we think less about the game performing well on systems especially when they are just expected to run well regardless which is reckless thinking, you don't need more than 1-3gb of vram if they know how to optimize and utilize texture streaming.
@@chiboy_speaks you answered yourself, when it was released (7 years ago) it was a GPU for 1080p. It's been a few years and to play new titles (assuming the 6gb of vram allows you to) you have to make a lot of compromises.

@@ChainFTW Funnily enough you might actually be able to on linux since the RADV amd driver implements emulated raytracing on the older gpus that doesn't have it
@@ChainFTW well the driver should technically support it on a rx 580 and any other GCN gpu (it supports all RDNA and GCN gpus) but how well it would work in practice is another question. Keep in mind since it's emulated they have to make up for the lack of hardware acceleration for the parts of ray tracing stuff that the later cards have dedicated hardware for with the main gpu cores which will result in an extra performance hit. I am quite curious to what extent it works though, would be interesting if it's playable on some of these cards on linux but not windows. nvidia does (or at least did have) support for some emulated ray tracing on the top end 10 series cards on windows as well and it was pretty slow, not sure if that works in this game though or if it's still available.
@@olnnn Alan Wake 2 seemed kind of playable on the 500 Series on Linux. Gets 30 fps most of the time. It would be interesting to see what kind of performance the 500 series provide.
i think deliberately stopping games that are below minimum requirements should not be allowed it should be up to the player to decide if their computer can play the game
It's limitation of vulkan API. It doesn't support advanced memory management with shared memory and so on. So with vulkan all memory that game allocates as video memory must actually be available on GPU. There are some workarounds but they are either hard to implement or would damage experience for users with sufficient amount of memory. So there is no reason to spend development time on far from good experience.

This game is very optimized. As long as you have enough VRAM it works with great performance and visuals. There are multiple games that work on low vram gpus, but actually struggle in terms of performance on basically any GPUs. This one isn't like that.
Strange thing is that I saw this running with an iGPU (780M on Ryzen 7 8700G) in another UA-cam video, because more VRAM could be assigned from RAM. It's weird that an RTX 2060 can be worse in modern games than an iGPU because of limited VRAM. Those VRAM requirements are rising like crazy these days, making it difficult to understand that NVidia paired their mobile mid-range GPU solution with 8GB VRAM.
Damn, so this is like an early game made specifically for the RTX 5000 series. As seen from the other GPU reviews, even the RTX 4090 struggles to get 60 FPS (and only does so because of DLSS)... I guess console is the way to go.
Crazy how devs nowadays just don't care anymore about optimization. Not everyone can afford a 800.- GPU. If they want to get a larger market they should make some effort lmao
Try to find "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle | Benchmarking on RTX 3050 Ti 4GB VRAM" here on youtube. I don’t know how much you can trust that video, but everything works for him. Perhaps it's the Resisable Bar support, or something else.
Could of been before they implemented that update that had ray tracing and path tracing in it on 9th, alot of benchmarks with 1080ti's and all lower cards were working then and some now are not, so maybe the RT and PT are allocating over 6gb from the start so it crashes...
Okay this is sad. It only has been 2 years when 4GB VRAM wasn’t enough to run newer games anymore and now 6GB VRAM isn’t enough anymore as well. Well, I guess 8GB VRAM GPUs really must have that much luck to be the new minimum VRAM to run any new games for the next 3/4 years instead of 2 years before 12GB VRAM becomes the next minimum.
Hey! Did you try to run it with the latest patch on a 6gb card? I see there are some tests publised, when people successfully run it on 2060 6gb recently.
This should probably be a wakeup call for NVIDIA to STOP PUTTING 8GB VRAM ON 60 CLASS GPUs given how even 8GB GPUs are getting utterly destroyed in this game.
It's weird tbh because I also forced 720p low through the file, but I tried deleting some other cache files and it worked that way, meaning it launched and I didn't get an error. Shader preload was the problem for me.
Try checking if you have the high resolution texture pack DLC installed, and if so, uncheck it. The high res textures are optional so disabling them should help a ton (texture streaming pool just changes the memory pool of said textures, not the quality of them.) So disabling the DLC should be similar to using low texture quality in other games. In GamePass it asks you if you want to install the texture pack as well. IDK how Steam handles it. That could be worth a look
Not surprising really, this game is probably using an updated version of the Wolfenstein New Colosus Engine. And that game was really iffy with VRAM usage. Basically if you didn't have 4GB of VRAM, you were going to have a stuttery experience
Apparently you can fix the issue by adding the game to Nvidia Control Panel and rebooting. It might honestly be a driver issue in addition to being VRAM limited. I saw another gameplay video and it looks like you can hit 40-50 fps, but the textures (especially foliage) look muddy as hell.
I'll be testing the 4090 again with PT, not the lower end cards that I've already tested, they aren't capable of running PT properly, it requires 12GB of VRAM. I'll test many other cards with PT though, throughout the week 🙂
There is one channel ( Christo Gevedjov) that shows game with rtx 3050 6gb, arc a380 and mobile igpus like 740m 760m, 780m. Wonder how if its fake or they allocated more ram to use as vram?

@@Ce_Mw yeah, but that game is 4 years old and was developed with the last generation in mind.
Different engines have different requirements. The engine this game uses has been VRAM demanding for a long time.
I m wondering how the mighty GTX 1080 Ti handle this game :D
Because it's not really possible :D and there is one DLSS that renders the game at a lower resolution and thus the game needs less vram
The game won't even start
its 11gb bro,1080ti is the best valuable gpu ever
1080 ti doesent have raytracing its just a shitty gpu
It won't even start
I use 2060 6Gb (Undervolt until 70W) + R5 3600 + 8Gbx2. Work fine on default setting. TAA dynamic, All Low, 1080

So my 4050 is essentially dead at this point. 6 GB VRAM in a 40 series GPU is just a scam, didn't think I would care about it as much but now I do.
Such a cheap marketing move that forces people to buy new graphics cards...
I've had this game installed and ready for the last 3 days, so that I could play this as soon as it launched...
Thanks for the 6GB VRAM on my 3060 laptop Nvidia.
That weird 2060 12GB that was released during the pandemic GPU shortage, its time has come!
Exactly that is why bought it
I bet the 6GB cards could get upgraded to 12GB with a heat gun and download the bios of the 12GB variant.
I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS! So it won't run on RTX 4050 laptop either
That means in future RTX 4060 and RTX 4070 laptops will struggle as well as they have 8GB Vram
a lot of RTX 4070 laptops cost around $1500
i bought my 4070 laptop, now i will never buy a pc, console, laptop. Thanks nvidia, you have lost your old customer.
@vave2607 Damn, I've bought an RTX 4060 laptop (which right now is excellent still) but speculating that in future it won't be able to run AAA games so quickly I wouldn't buy a gaming laptop or gaming PC again but I will instead only buy consoles for gaming

This is a very disturbing trend with AAA games these days it needs to stop. The RTX 2060 should be more than capable for a game like this!
the rtx 2060 is almost a dead GPU. People tend to forget how many years have passed but this GPU is practically 7 years old and even at launch it was just a mid-range GPU.

Tf u mean dead gpu,it’s still a full capable gpu,and btw it played most games maxed out at 1080p when it launched

I am quite curious to what extent it works though, would be interesting if it's playable on some of these cards on linux but not windows.

i think deliberately stopping games that are below minimum requirements should not be allowed it should be up to the player to decide if their computer can play the game

The RTX 2060 12GB should support it I think.
Crazy how devs nowadays just don't care anymore about optimization. Not everyone can afford a 800.- GPU. If they want to get a larger market they should make some effort lmao
Crisp do you have one machine where you swap the graphic cards for benchmarking or do you own multiple machines? Just curious, thanks! Abraço!
*Unreal Engine looking with excitement*
Hey! Did you try to run it with the latest patch on a 6gb card? I see there are some tests publised, when people successfully run it on 2060 6gb recently.
The game runs on RTX 2060 6 GB without any patches.
Best video ever!
Thank you so much!!!
Oh god… I just got this for my cousin who has a 2060 laptop I need to call him before it blows up 😂

Not surprising really, this game is probably using an updated version of the Wolfenstein New Colosus Engine. And that game was really iffy with VRAM usage. Basically if you didn't have 4GB of VRAM, you were going to have a stuttery experience
There's a big difference between having a stuttery experience and not being able to launch the game at all.

Your going to be testing the gpu again on the 9th with the path tracing patch
I'll be testing the 4090 again with PT, not the lower end cards that I've already tested, they aren't capable of running PT properly, it requires 12GB of VRAM.
