A bit of context for anyone stumbling on this video 10 years later XD.
Adam's dear friend named Gabi asked Adam if he could make an ATM for one of her friend's senior thesis projects. This other friend had worked and saved up for a year now for this project, and Adam was given a budget to make an ATM prop. He totally blew it and never asked anyone for help. Gabi calls him and tells him that she wants him to account for every penny in the budget. He goes to the house where they were shooting the project to go pick up his tools, and everyone is waiting for him.

It's comforting to hear someone famous whom I positively revere own up to their own all too human failings, and be able to chalk it up to lessons learned...

Failure has an astonishing amount of power. When you fail or make a mistake, it's not that you necessarily learn more but you learn it hard. By failing, you get at least a bit of a sting. The harder it stings you, the more you remember that mistake.
There are some mistakes I make that I keep making and they are the painless ones. I forget them and repeat them. But when a mistake hurts, you bet your ass I won't do it again.

Who is "Gabby" and what did Adam do that killed their friendship?

I think it was a case of wasted materials, so when he says "from every model I should have painted..." it means that he bought the materials in order to paint them, but did not actually paint them. and on something like mythbusters when they're doing alot of projects at the same time, wasted materials can become quite alot of money, so he had to remember all the materials he had bought but not used and account for all the money he spent. hope this clears it up.

I was wondering through most of his monologue what the point of it all was, then he finally tied it all together and made his point fantastically: as the title explains. Thanks for sharing. 5 stars.

He is very vague about it- he didn't do several things that he was supposed to do. But it REALLY REALLY doesn't matter. Pay attention to the lesson.

  • @aakla

I think this is about him taking a job to build an ATM for a play or TV spot for a friend's college final or something and Adam couldn't pull it off but didn't want to admit he couldn't do it causing the friend to fail her class. NOTE: I heard it a while ago once so some of the story might be off.

to all those wondering what he did wrong, the entire story is told on a talk he did at The Amazing Meeting 7 and trust me it was pretty terrible, he also tells another failure story.

walker percy once wrote, that the word boredom may find its origine in the french word bourrer, what means to stuff, so the bored personality is the one that is stuffed with itself and i think that is what i am getting here, the rest is opera kitsch, bad opera kitsch, to be stuffed with that, and get something out of it, you have to believe...in opera kitsch. apart from that this speech gives boredom a real bad reputation that it does not deserve!
