Do y'all not realize how good this beat is? Jesus christ NO I.D. didn't get nearly enough credit for his work on this, deserves to be in the title of every song.
Word. Beat is ahead of it’s time big up NO I.D
This sample is from Quarteto 1111 and the song is Todo Mundo e Ninguém.
1970's cult classic from Portugal, reciting a poem from our dearly Gil Vicente. Go ahead
I said it in a previous 444 song and I'll say it again, NO I.D. IS A PROBLEM
This has a Pete Rock feel to it.Great track.
Bet he got that bag he deserves💰
My favorite Jay-Z song. The production, the rhyming, the flow. The running, the culture, the hopes. The maturity, the professionalism, the fulfillment. This song is perfect.
I couldn’t agree more. Perfect song!

My son was conceived while I was living on Marcy, my only son. This song is special to me. Real talk.
I lived on Flushing Avenue for years. Have you read a novel called Escape From Marcy? You probably haven't...it's not well known. If you haven't, check it out. I heard the author is trying to get in touch with jay to possibly do a movie. Good read!!!
Blessings to you and your son. From me and my two boys. ✌️

Every true hip hop fan should fall in love with Marcy Me. This song is better than any other track off this CLASSIC
The fact that so many of us thought something bad was going to happen to the child just speaks volumes in itself

Proud of being Portuguese.
Good song Jay-Z 👏❤️
Just came back from watching "Uncut Gems" and found out the Safdie brothers directed this music video.

"Assume a virtue if you have not..." Very important for Success in life. Jay is the Goat for being able to effortlessly weave deep philosophical quotes into his rhymes.
Can you elaborate on what that actually means please
@@nohatenohypenohatenohype9779 It means to take on a quality or characteristic that you may not possess but would like to. Like if you are not naturally brave or fearless, but want to be, the term Jay used prompts you to do what it takes become brave or fearless. To Assume those virtues. Not in a sense of pretending but actually attaining them.

It's sad that through the whole video you're hoping the wrong person doesn't get shot because that's what we're used to.
weird you say that when no one is the video was doing anything wrong....so what is it that we need to do better?
bigstU25 correct
bigstU25
I am from the hood south side chicago wild 100's lived here 27 years since birth. and i know exactly what the video is about. and its not a matter of us having to do better. its a matter of police not stereotyping black people in general. whites commit the same crimes at the same rate if not higher. yet you will not see helicopters following innocent white around looking for someone armed with a knife. we shouldnt have to be careful or in a higher since of alertness simply because when they see black skin they feel threatened. should be able to go from point a to point be without being harassed, with your logic your blaming all black people for a few criminal elements. thats like saying all white people need to be on high alert and know more about the law and walk on egg shells because a few white kids shoot up schools and churches. yet you dont see them telling there people that...stop blaming black people for the perception of racist whites.
I really was thinking that the whole time. Very profund, old sport.
Allen Ragin for real thats the beauty of it
Sometimes I listen to this song and think it's the most beautiful Hip-Hop song ever. But never hold on to the thought for too long because most people wouldn't even list it in Jay's top 20 songs. But it might be. It's perfect. From the lyrics, the story, the history, the references, the culture, the bars, the production, the chorus and the singing, even the singing in the outro is perfect. "You couldn't change me if I wanted to. I'm a take this with me to the moon."
That's the beauty of Jay z. He's been in his prime since he came out in 96. It's hard to tell when he was at his peak and when he was at a low.
He says his worst album is volume 1 In my life time, but it's on that same album that you have tracks like "where I'm from", "a million and one questions", "streets is watching".
His other bad album according to critics is "kingdom come", but that album has great tracks like "lost ones", "show me what you got", "minority report" and others.
The man has atleast five classic albums, atleast because personally I think it's more than that.
I thought I was alone. Love you for this comment bro! 👌🏾💯❤️

Family Feud is good too
I’m right there with you. This easily one of my favorite jay z tracks
His Vocals are always so clean. No back ups, very few adlibs. Just clean raw raps, no reverb, clean up front in the mix. True skillz.
just noticed that
2:46 is one of the best shots I have seen. It shows the compassion that the guy has for the kid, exhibiting the classic "neighborhood kid" relationship. The man even shrugs, as to say "Come on dude, you think I'm going to make you give me back this little amount of change?". He's just giving the kid a little pocket money, but for the kid that little amount of money is like winning the lottery.
i was honestly thinking this and my heart pours for the season everytime. as i am trying to comprehend what it meas to me i realise so much can be said about it yet i cant get the words out.
The way the music and vocals ease up on that scene too. I love it

This guy is so important to hip hop. He kept it 100 all the way through. He stuck with boom bap and lyrics and refused to jump on the autotune hype train and somehow still managed to be the richest and most succesful rapper through the generations. LEGEND.

This video brought back so many memories of growing up in Jamaica, when ur dads (big homie) would have u run to the shop (corner store) then gave u the change on ur return. As a kid that was one our main hustle, u actually felt like u earned it, was such a great feeling.

You shouldn’t just assume somethings deep from the way it looks, otherwise everyone would believe Xxx’s lyrics and music is actually deeper than it is. But yes you’re right that it’s mainly the flowy piano instrumental with the typically Jayz excellent film making, as the lyrics of the song are a nostalgic rose tinted look back for Jay on his younger life in Marcy projects and growing up around street dealers, and then later becoming one. But the video itself with the overwatching eye of the police floodlight, kind of shows an alternative meaning to the song on top of how history can’t be repaired only the future can, and how Jayz was never born one, but bc of where he was born he’s almost destined to become an American Gangster, as Denzel is also reffed in the lyrics. Also the floodlight is taken to be seen as the lens that the police and mainstream media might see dealers or black people generally as subjective and very concentrated on one aspect, being close minded. Yes the quality
Entire album was brilliant, as I’ve personally never seen such a personification of white and black, and culture all wrapped up into one rooftop and one police helicopter in any music video, well done to Jay z.

The video 👌. I could be reading to much but in my opinion the young boy represents young Jay Z who got out to the world and came back home with more than food. He came back with the spotlight on him. He really represented BK to the fullest.
Was anyone else holding their breath til the end, hoping the little boy didn't get kill. I almost started crying because I was so afraid that was gonna happen..
No I was not actually crying, being a mom myself it's the fear of young black children being targets that tugs at my heart. This song has brought tears of joy to my eyes. I love this song, makes me appreciate the efforts my parents put in raising me.
I don't think anyone realize what Jay Z just illustrated. As this child's raised around this type of settings he's easily exposed to a lot, Violence, hardship, Cruelty but since he's a child, doing small favors for his people makes him feel like loved and Secure enough that he ok with it because he knows that this is his family so to speak. The moral of the story is wherever your grew up around is what your going to be used to and the sad thing is that he might do the same, the money he's getting is like a gateway, these favors will just get bigger and bigger as he gets older....

This literally has two meanings, depends on how you want to look at it, the light represents represents the stereotype that the ethnic male/female are always up to something that's illegal, or the light can represent gods presence over the little boys life in a rough neighbourhood, somewhat like a 'messiah' cause he is trusted with the money and welcomed with open arms to the party. I only got that vibe from this line alone; *"Lord, we know who we are
Yet we know not what we may be"

F A M E R indeed friend..indeed
Nicely sum up salute too you
F A M E R THANK YOU. The shit that kills me is u hear ppl talk about "lyrical rap" 🤔 it's like saying "contact oriented" tackle football or some shit!? there's certain elements that need to be present in order to fall under the umbrella of the definition of Hip-Hop.. all this other shit is a spinoff or sub genre.. but since they have NON hiphop ppl steering the boat they got ppl thinkin crazy.. kids should understand the true definition of hiphop. not this anything goes shit. ppl w/lil in front of their name claiming they're BETTER THAN BIG AND PAC? if ur reading this, and think I'm on some "oldhead" shit or just don't get it... Listen to Black Thought freestyle.. and then 25 more tracks from him. THAT'S HIPHOP. Google the elements of hiphop. and I fuck w/Uzi and a few new different types of dudes.. but it's not supposed to be next to Mobb deep or Nas or Jay-Z.. js
