National Anthem of Wallonia (Belgium) - Le chant des Wallons (Li Tchant des Walons)

- "Le Chant des Wallons" (Li Tchant des Walons in Walloon, The Song of the Walloons in English) is the anthem of Wallonia, a region of Belgium.
The original words, written in Walloon by Théophile Bovy in 1900, were in 1901 set to music composed by Louis Hillier. Performed for the first time in the city of Liège, the song quickly spread to other parts of French-speaking Belgium and established itself like a "national" anthem for Wallonia.
When, on 15 July 1998, the Walloon Parliament approved a law defining the official symbols of the Walloon Region (a flag, anthem, and holiday), it was a French version of Li Tchant des Walons that was chosen. However, the lyrics adopted on that occasion are not a direct translation of the original: the number and order of verses differ, and they diverge significantly from the original Walloon text in places.

That’s what I’m currently doing ! My family comes both from Flanders and Namen (or Nameur in Walloon) and seeing one of my native language dying makes me sad. Long live Belgium and it’s culture 🇧🇪

I've never heard the Walloon dialect before. Not sure if it is still spoken in Wallonia. While I'm a Flemish nationalist who believes Belgium should split up, I do respect Wallonia as our southern neighbor, and I like your anthem. If anyone from Wallonia is reading this, you guys should be proud of your dialect & your anthem. Never forget about those.

@@bestrafung2754 Joining the Netherlands can be interesting to think about financially and in terms of language. However, there is a major difference in mentality (even more than with Wallonia), especially with provinces such as North Holland, South Holland, Utrecht, and Flevoland. Those provinces are very woke and believe me, most Flemish citizens are allergic to woke. That is why an own state would be more interesting. It won't be easy in the beginning, but with a down-to-earth mentality, it should work.

Is Wallonian a separate language or a dialect of French? And are this languages mutually understandable?
It's a dialect, wallonian is part of the languages d'oil, it's a group that encompasses most of northern France dialects, and also from which modern french comes. For intelligibility if you're a native french speaker you can get some words by listening really carefully, I have a bit of an easier time as someone living in wallonia of course even though none of my family members spoke walloon ( most spoke Luxembourgish or Lorrain )
