    I just discovered orchids. I love you. Seriously. Thank you for helping me find the bravery to repot the orchid I was given when my daughter died. I don't want to lose it.

    A couple of the roots on my orchids are cracked (looks like someone snapped it in half), but the roots are still functioning and growing 😊 Also, I found the prettiest white mini phalaenopsis at the bargain store by my house. I originally bought her for the living room but I discovered that she has a beautiful fragrance and pretty pink stems on the flowers. Not a fan of white phalaenopsis but this one is a keeper.

    Thanks so much for this video! I am trying growing my phals in leca. I have them in small clay pots with the long slats for drainage. Placed them in a water reservoir tray so they can always have that moisture available. (Similar to the level at which you put the holes in the plastic pots. So far so good. I have never had any luck with phals so I'm glad that most of them are at least still alive. Please continue your videos on semi hydro as I find it very helpful and I'm sure that others do as well.

    I love phals for their roots! Sturdy, sends a clear message when it needs water, doesnt seem to care when it's repotted.
    I bumped a new zygo root (which seem to be really sensitive) or something and it just decided to give up and die off. Root was fine one day and then brown tipped and dying the next. Plant needs to calm down, IMO. 🤣

    How do you water these pots? I see there are only 2 holes for drainage on the side of the pot- does this medium require some water to remain in the bottom of the pot?

    Really love mini phals... I always get Them with Moss, but the roots is always dead it seems or rotted away... Phal that grow in Moss dont seem to like bark and All the roots die and the plant make New ones or it is just me? New sealand Moss seems to be hard to find near me... So i May try these leca beans.. I mainly grow phals so i think, this Will be the Best way to grow them. Thx for tips, keep up the good work. 👌Btw Are these 10~20 mm the leca u use?

    Sure do love those pots! Hoping the garden centers by me will start to bring in the plastic ones now that they're gearing up for the season!
    I just re-potted a couple of phals into moss - maybe I'll put one into s/h & see how it goes.
    As for removing the bark, I find soaking the mostly-bare roots helps to gently get rid of any clingers - I might have to do this several times to get everything off, but since they slough off so easily, its worth the extra time I may spend..

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 років тому +1

      Hi, soaking does help particularly the thick rooted orchids, but those don't get much damage as it is so.. no real need for soaking if we are not dealing with pot bound orchids. But the damage is pretty severe on thin rooted orchids no matter how soaked they are.

    hello dani,
    I have noticed that every time I repot phal from bark or sphagnum moss in to semi hydro the root start to rot or fungus grow on them, even though I use hydrogen peroxide and I also soak the plant in 10% bleach solution. what should I do to prevent fungus investing my plant?

    • @chanteuse1978
      @chanteuse1978 5 років тому +1

      lavenderiasis 10% bleach is really strong, and orchids dislike chlorine. You may be inadvertently creating a problem, if the bleach is damaging the roots that would make them susceptible to fungal and bacterial infections

    • @R3VIV3YOU
      @R3VIV3YOU 5 років тому +1

      lavenderiasis please don’t soak them in bleach don’t even spray with peroxide. The roots are like orchids organs you gotta be gentle and kind to them. I never have problem repotting to semi hydro I only soak and gently wash the roots with my finger using warm water.

    • @AliceSpaxxx
      @AliceSpaxxx 3 роки тому +1

      I also think the 10% bleach and then on top of it soaking it in it....could be the source of your problem. Or at least it can not be healthy for the orchid. Orchids are very sensitive!

Because of that dry climate I have not dared to purchase Burrageara Nelly Isler for many years which I have always admired at Ikea. I watched many of your videos in the past month and I found out you also like Nelly Isler and you grow it in semi hydroponics. Do you think she will be happy in semi-hydro if the climate is dry? Using colored pots, how will you know if the water reservoir is empty? I just got a new Phal and put it in semi hydro with a colored pot and it's drinking much more water than my others. Any suggestions on how I can keep on eye on when I need to water again, without being able to see through the pot?

    • @paulsaunders6492
      @paulsaunders6492 6 років тому

      Sara Endres if the reservoir is empty, the beads will dry out and change colour. You could put your fingers over the two holes and hold the pot up to the light; with luck you'll be able to see the water level. Failing that, just pour water on top until it runs out the holes.

      I tried the clay pebbles from IKEA. One phal is doing great in it but in a traditional way. The other one in SH has rotting roots but I am not sure if it is related to the pebbles, this phal was very stressed out(after flowering from grocery store) before I repot it. As long as I can see, the wicking ability is good. The size of the pebbles is 8mm-16mm mixed. Hope it helps!

    Hi Danny! Helpful tips! I have a question about Phal roots: what are your thoughts on leaving the inner root "string" and just removing the dead velamin around it? I've heard some growers do this as a way to keep some roots on a plant that doesn't have too many or just in general. Would the roots still take up water without the velamin? Thanks! 😊🌺

    • @alanm9523
      @alanm9523 6 років тому

      Unfortunately, the root doesn't function without velamen

    • @milenaa5054
      @milenaa5054 6 років тому

      Al C one of my orchids have a big thick root but somewhere on it's middle (length wise) velamen is missing and that inner string is visible so it literally holds onto that string. Can that root live like that or will it die with time? :-s

    • @alanm9523
      @alanm9523 6 років тому +1

      Milena Andjelkovic If it’s a phalaenopsis the root can still live and branch out but it’s more vulnerable than an intact root because of the open wound and it may die off sooner. Usually it still functions unless it’s really bad and more than half of the root is missing velamen
