Truly, truly incredible! And never in my life have I heard English spoken more beautifully than listening to Sir David. I am deeply grateful for having discovered this treasure.
My pilgrimage was in 1972 and as a student of architecture I visited all of these cathedrals... understanding only later that it was a spiritual pilgrimage as well. These videos are a treasure.
@@rosemarymccarron3887 Does that matter? They are Christian whether Catholic or Anglican. We all know they started out Catholic and the violent conversion of the reformation. That’s well known history. In common with many people I love our cathedrals but am not religious and do not care which flavour of Christianity they belong to.

What magnificent examples of architecture! Thank you for creating this series and choosing Sir David as the narrator. I don't think, for me, I would have found this nearly as interesting without Sir David's wonderful voice.
All these cathedrals are beautiful, but I was mightily impressed by Gloucester Cathedral's fan vaulting. I have been to several southern cathedrals like Winchester and Wells, but I have never seen such beautiful ceilings! It's such a wonderful miracle that they, as well as the Great East Window, survived the reformation. I was quite surprised to learn about the earthquake that damaged Lincoln Cathedral. I don't usually associate northern England with earthquakes! I was astonished to learn where the Venerable Bede is buried, Lincoln Cathedral, as well as St. Cuthbert. I'm so glad they were left alone. This is such an excellent program, thank you for posting it!
The fan vaulting at Gloucester is stunning. The Venerable Bede is buried at Durham, as is St. Cuthbert. I've been to all the cathedrals featured in the series.
@@stephengraham5099 You have been so lucky! I wish I could say the same. I have only been to some, and they were in the first part, so watching these has been a treat!
@@BlueSaphire70 I live in London so have excellent rail connections and I booked well in advance to get the cheapest ticket. I have visited some by motorcycle as well. My top three. Lincoln, Ely and Durham.
Thank you for this brilliant series. In my mind, I can imagine the thrill of the awesome beauty at the moment the Bishop elevates Jesus, truly, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament during a Pontifical High Mass in any of our former Cathedrals, especially Lincoln. For the Church and the salvation of souls...❤🙏🙏🙏❤
David I love your voice and the shared experience of going through these beautiful buildings. I feel uplifted by this experience.. thank you and God bless.
Thank you for this excellent video. I am so tired of watching other videos which are nothing more than drone shots of roofs. Your video is well organized and beautiful. It is a pleasure to see internal shots of buildings (cathedrals)., as the interior of these cathedrals cannot be imagined.
What a fantastic series. I really enjoyed this. Although a slight correction. Lincoln cathedral. It wasn't the tallest building in Europe. Lincoln Cathedral in Lincoln, United Kingdom was the tallest building in the world for 238 years, from 1311 to 1549, after a spire was added to its central tower. At 160 meters (525 feet) tall, it was taller than the Great Pyramid of Giza until a storm destroyed the spire in 1549. I would like to see sir david suchet carry out further historical programmes.
Lovely documentary about Great Britain's cathedrals so beautifully handed down the generations in faith and historically. I love my own cathedral in Lexington, but only built in 1967.
These are wonderful videos! At the same time, they are sad reminders of the past when England was Catholic, and in full communion with the Holy See. English Catholics, like all Catholics , went on pilgrimage in order to visit and pray at the shrines of the saints asking their intercession. The dissolution of the monasteries under Henry the eighth, and the public destruction of the shrines and relics of the Saints, along with the adoption of the radical errors of protestantism by the founders of the “ new religion” ended any real connection with the pious Catholic devotions of the past. That there are those today, who while still embracing “ the new religion established by law,” wish to recapture Catholic devotions of the past is very admirable indeed. However in the opinion of many , it is too little, and too late.
This series unwittingly reveals an implicitly protestant and modern sensibility. The narrator informs us that the purpose of a cathedral is to serve its community, with no apparent awareness that their service to the community lies in offering prayer and especially the Mass. The "historic church consultant" assures us that while *we* go to cathedrals for "big services," the medievals went "to seek salvation." Why would we got to big services if not to advance our salvation? For aesthetic edification?
It's a question why the King wanted to reform only the church, destroy the invaluable items from historical times but did nothing to end monarchy, let alone "Reform" it.
Great series, I have loved them all. Just a tad disappointed that there was no mention of the Bishop of Durham who, in the last years of the 20th century said that he did not believe in God. A sew days later Durham Cathedral was struck by lightning and the roof severely damaged. Just saying.
I'm sorry, but the music was far too loud. It was at just the right level in the first episode. Such a shame. Lincoln Cathedral was indeed the tallest building in Europe but it was also the tallest in the world. I was surprised that the famous Lincoln Imp grotesque in the Angel Choir wasn't mentioned.
Great Britain should keep intact it's Ancient Ancestral Inheritance Of Old 🗝️👑Roman Gothic Architecture solemnly, along with proliferate The Old Roman Gothic Architecture into it's application of infrastructure indeed 👁️⚖️, because the old architectural designing infrastructure is the identity of any nation's enormous bonafide impression, that acquired the belligerence from entire human civilization
A great series but the script they've given David Suchet sounds like a cut and paste from various guide books, including endless trite comments about peace, tranquility and simplicity. Plus, a reference to the Book of "Revelations". They must have slipped that in after the Book of Revelation when God was looking the other way.
St Cuthberts body was 'removed' during the Reformation? Do you not mean his holy shrine was desecrated? These cathedrals were holy places. Please tell the truth Sir David.

These great cathedrals were built by the catholic church until henry 8th stole them from the church.

Durham... ❤❤❤
Lincoln was actually the tallest building in the world with its spires not just Europe.

I'm not sure you have to repeat the opening every episode. The actual "episode 2 " only begins after 4" of watching the opening! Pity!
I was hoping to see a list of the music that was included throughout, but I don't see it.
3:56 - I have never heard this version of this hymn (He Who would Valiant Be) in this acapella format. I love it. Where can I get the recording?
❤thank you 😅
does anyone know the name of the boys choir hymn that started playing around 16:16? THANKS in advance !

the fire of York Minster some say was a punishment after the nomination of a black liberal bishop !
Why do the choir sing repent rather than the correct word relent? To be a pilgrim.
They were once great Catholic cathedrals until Henry 8th stole them from the church. This presenter should be saying catholic instead of christian.
Thank you for this journey. Incredible...
Tut, tut Suchet, it is Revelation, singular. John had a revelation, not several. It's really irritating when people get this wrong, it's not that hard
..... you must be fun at parties.
@@Mrs.Karen_Walker actually I am.
The first three minutes and fifty-five seconds is a waste of time. Thank you, producer.
A waste of time according to you
love the cathedrals religion not so much x
Reformation should never have happened.
The Reformation had to happen. Mother church was corrupt. She still is.
These are just wretched henry viii protestant churches lacking any semblance to its former
