  • Chris Johnston and I interview the one and only Frank Gambale! Frank gives a detailed interview about his unique and highly original style of guitar playing that revolutionized the instrument. He also shows us his equally unique tuning that allows him to play keyboard voicings on the guitar which would be impossible in standard tuning.

So are you, Brett. You would've been a great alternate option for Megadeth post Chris Poland 😮
I love Marty, but I've also often wondered what would've happened had Dave gone with another jazz/fusion based player.
I'd love to see what you could come up with for alternative solos on the Rust In Peace album.

Excellent interview! Love Frank, as his teaching material really helped me understand music theory while I was trying to get to that next level. Interesting note about the "Gambale Tuning". I bought Franks transcription of my favorite piece of his, "Table for One" after I learned about the tuning, and then restrung up a guitar to play it. Years later, becoming an Allan Holdsworth nut, I was able to discover Allan doing similar stuff with the Synthaxe! Of course, Allan never told anyone. He used tunings like E standard, but the notes go in reverse pitch order, so now the highest pitched string, is where your low E would be. Or making every other string and octave higher or down, and even incorporating those ideas in 5ths, or 4ths. It was mostly for lead stuff but not so much chord work, but eventually later he did on Flat Tire. This is actually very easy to do with the Synthaxe, just like Frank discovered with the VGA. Another funny note, is Allan also used these same tunings on the album he did WITH Frank, Truth In Shredding! I'm not calling Frank a thief or anything at all, because as far as I know, Allan did all of his solos, guitar and Synthaxe, at home without Frank present. I think he was trying to keep it a secret :).

great knowledge and understanding of theory this gentleman, not a lot of melodic simple genius in his playing style like most excellent theorists, its almost impossible to find an outstanding theorist with outstanding originality and melody in their playing, a wonderful fellow

Thanks Brett for a wonderful interview. Frank is such a beautiful stylist and innovator, his style is so addicting and draws you into wanting to devote yourself totally to it and live it but I find if you just take a few bits and pieces and add them within your technique it’s very rewarding. Peace and thanks for this once again enlightening interview.🙏🏻🎶✌🏻🌍

Franck was the first I heard saying it right, "Moods" ! And that's what they are, very different worlds and soundscapes, according to the 'mode'.
Indian Music is a great example, they can spend two hours in one 'chord'!

Great interview. I can testify Frank has a heart, very generous and inspirational. Very interesting to learn about his piano playing background in this interview. Frank has been very good to me as a piano player and never mentioned his time with the piano. Also love all the background on his time with Chick. Was great when you were with Gambale on the MVP album.

Great interview, also cool to hear the Derek Sherinian shout out (43:11 for those interested) - as a widdly-diddly lead guitarist I have to admit that I find a lot of keys solos kinda lacking in feel/attitude/whatever you wanna call it, but Derek knocks it outta the park with that stuff. His tune "The River Song" contains the single most intense note I've ever heard played on a keyboard (ua-cam.com/video/Xe9h6puvtKg/v-deo.html last note of the solo).
But yeah, I've been practicing that sweep sequence in the final chorus of Little Charmer (one of my personal fav instrumental guitar tunes) for a decade plus at this point - not too far off getting it now!
EDIT: btw if you, like me, ever wanted to heard Holdsworth playing over a metal tune, check out Day of the Dead by Sherinian - I think it's pretty neat.

Curious as to whether one can use a 24 gauge plain steel string for the second string and a 17 gauge nickel wound for the 4th string? Or would these changes in string composition make both the 4th string G3 and 2nd string E3 to lacks in tension to coherently translate?
    Thanks--

I'm not a fan of too much jamming improvisation, I love it when a lead guitarist makes his guitar sing like a vocalist, I don't mind shredding as long as the guitarist can make his guitar sing. Otherwise, it's just a lot of kaos to my ears, or the guitarist is just trying to wing it by jamming out. That's why I prefer the vocalist's approach to the guitar 🎸 I've heard Frank's music and I think he tends to jam too much sometimes rather than make his guitar sing, just my opinion. Other than that he is a gifted guitarist 🎸

Very interesting interview... Frank is brilliant!! since I've seen this video I've started to try to use his personal sweep picking cocept in my phrasing :) Brett and Frank have complementary phrasing techniques... Exactly like Holdsworth and Gambale decades ago.. I hope for a new album with these two amazing guitar players!

There was none of this around in the 80s. The best guitar players were the ones with a great enough ear to figure out how to do what sounded impossible. I knda miss those days a little because now eveyone gets to know how to be killer due to having direct access to great guitarists and what they're doing.😁
