Mayumi Tanaka is LEGENDARY. I still can't believe she's been voicing Dragon Ball's Krillin since 1987!! Her work as Luffy has cemented her as, in my opinion, one of the greatest voice actors of all time!!
I just had a crazy idea. So.. you know how AI voice can make you sound like anything, right? And it requires a large sample library to make an accurate voice.
Know what has an insane sample library?
One Piece.
Build an AI filter of the japanese VAs, then feed it the english dub.
And now, you have true english One Piece, with the OG japanese VAs, plus, the mouth flaps match, because the english dub team already did that.
How has no one done this?
@@Volyren The AI usually sounds like a convincing impression but doesn't have much emotion, or can't do difficult things like comedic timing and conveying hidden meaning or intention.
Also the library of sample data is saying words and sounds from JP language, so it would likely sound strange saying english words.
Maybe I'm wrong though ... it is an interesting idea and if you tried it I would love to see how it turned out!
Luffy's voice actress is still kickin. she kills luffy's psychopath laugh, it gives me goosbumps.
It's really amazing how her laugh for Luffy sounds and feels much more different than her laugh for Krillin, who she's been voicing since '87.

Its insane how well Luffy's voice actress is doing. She's 68 and has been voicing Luffy for over 20 years.

One thing you will notice happening in the background is Chooper's and Zoro's surprisingly wholesome relationship.
It's the best part about One Piece imo, the entire crew just being a big happy (found) family. Zoro always looks after Chopper like he is his little brother, and Chopper looks up to Zoro as his big brother. Definitely the most underrated character relationship in OP imo.
when they were running away and got split up, it's because vivi said to go left, but luffy was turned back, so he actually did go to HIS left.
Fun fact:
Oda was actually worried that he wouldn't finish the series before Luffy's VA eventually dies. Think it's safe to say that nobody could replace her.
Also apparently, Luffy is going to be her last VA role. Iirc, she's planning on retiring after One Piece is over. Hell, Oda himself is planning on retiring after One Piece. Can't blame them, either. They've both been doing this for so damn long.
I mean, it makes sense it'll be her last. She's 68 now, and the anime will probably go for another 4 or 5 years at the least..

His voice changes slightly but it's a good change, since it makes sense people's voices change over time. It's like 95% the same voice though.

I mean, it mainly changes cause the actress (being over 40 when she started Luffy) is 25 years older now.

Also, slight correction. He isn't the second in command, he said that he is the 2nd division commander. Meaning that there is a 1st division commander above him, so he is 3rd in the crew. He has to deal with Blackbeard becasue he was part of the second division before jumping ship.
In theory, every division commander is Whitebeard's second in command. As you get more troops, you create more divisions, hence the numbering, but it's not a ranking. Think of another fleet in One Piece, that has divisions and commanders. They're also not ranked, just numbered. In practice and in the story, it does seem like Ace is third with the 1st division commander being the second in command, but I wouldn't say it's because of the division rankings, more like proximity to Whitebeard.
Don't even let your suspicion taint Ace, he is a bro through and through
Ace is an extremely cool, loyal complex and fun character with an intense past and some faults of his own. He's one of the BEST characters in one piece!

For your question about Ace being so polite, being thoughtful of others, and showing only good things: Ace is the older brother and Luffy is the younger one, so it makes sense that Ace is like that in that context. Luffy is a good kid overall even tho he is feral, and it makes sense his brother who he gets along with would be similar.
Additionally, when Ace asks Luffy to join Whitebeard's crew, and when Luffy asks Ace if he was sure he didnt want to join his crew-- that's not them trying to fight or dominate each other, it's because they genuinely like being together.
Some of the reactions from Ace, he's questioning the fit of Luffy and the rest of the crew. If they're respecting him or not, if he's leading them as a Captain, .. those type things.

Ace in the manga actually leaves right away. His leaving right away really highlights his urgency to find Blackbeard. But I always liked the way the anime did it because it means we get more time with Ace. The next time Ace shows up is a while from now.

Note: in the manga, Ace appeared directly in the ship for salute everyone then after he give a shot to the Baroque Works ships he leave, but in the anime they decided to include Ace for a while with the crew so Ace its a additional filler in this Arabasta trip on the desert :3

Luffy's voice does get a bit deeper later as he becomes a bit more mature and serious but you might not even notice it, the voice actress is still the same to this day

Ace is absolutely the cool guy in One Piece, he's a great character, loved your happy reaction. Also yes this show reminds you that while there's funny moments there's a civil war going on. I'll warn you the next two episodes (98-99) are filler, but they help with the world building of Alabasta. If anyone seems different during those 2 that's why. Thanks for the video as always.
It does change due to the nature of her just getting older and the voice sort of settling in her range after doing it for so long but she doesn't really go out of her way to change it to a large degree.

I'm glad they gave us more time with ace, it did a good job when anime viewers later felt closer to him and had a more layered experience as compared to manga readers during THOSE episodes.

Luffy's voice gets very slightly deeper to the point that you probably wouldn't notice it unless you watched episode 1000 and then watched episode 1. His voice doesn't break or anything, but it matures a lil bit over time as his character does. Not for quite some time tho 😁

Yeah, you got the sandstorm part right, but as far as the sand tornadoes you first asked about, they're called "dust devils". It's a pretty niche one, as we don't really encounter those too much in the states. Here in the south, we'll get leaf or dirt versions of dust devils occasionally. Drove by a tiny one the other day about 2-3 ft. high, but I've seen them a good bit taller.
luffy didn't get lost from the others. remember that as they running away, everyone was running forwards and luffy was running backwards to see the fight between ace and smoker. when nami said to "go left", luffy went left, from his position. so when everyone went to their left, luffy, still facing backwards, went to his left.

Feel free to ignore, because I might accidentally be talking out of my ass a bit, but Japanese Voice Acting is taken fairly seriously for anime. I.E.; making sure the VA for a character will always be the VA for that character. That’s why it was such a HUGE deal, and a big tragedy, when the Japanese voice actress for Bulma (From the “Dragon Ball” series) died, after being Bulma’s voice for 31 years. (rest in peace.😭)

Ace seems off when they start crossing the desert is cuz in manga he continued his own journey. He was so popular that they added him to couple more episodes. The writing for him was just clumsy in these episodes

I agree she does awesome. Imo the VA for Luffy kills it throughout. I think she maybe does Luffy's voice a little more mature later on, but for me, her performance is perfect. I honestly wasn't crazy about Luffy's voice very early on, but it grew on me to the point where now, it's one of my favorite performances by a VA of all time. Absolutely iconic role. You're spot on she's amazing I feel
