There was also the fact that war was seen as something amazing to take part in
      "Fight for your country"
      "Honor your family"
Children were always encouraged to join the army..
There is a poem "Dulce et decorum est"
      That talks about it
They were never warned of the horrors of war..only encouraged to lay their lives down..Glorification of war..

    • @akiokami9367

The great war was a concept of wonder. Reports did it no justice, but there were actually too many people volunteering (for Britain at least, and in the beginning). It became a spectacle, with soldiers talking of the excitement of war and encouraging others to join in. But then it turned, war advanced, and soldiers were taken down. WW2 was when the true turn happened, ptsd wasn't as prevalent in the first. But we quickly had a name for it during the second. The second was no spectacle, it was brutal, one that had no surplus of volunteers, and one that many injured themselves to avoid.

    ‘My son lost his face
    Not by losing a race
    Not by telling a lie
    Why did he fight?’
Sinistrous trenches will never lead the right way
Sun had choked with the beast’s fumes before it rose
Metal hail is hungry for flesh, ready to suppress the beating
Which in my ears is louder than commander’s orders
Like commandments rehashed, heads will doze
Bodies will keep the mantra of motion, competing
With their creator, who temporarily ignores dismay
    ‘My son lost his face
    Not by losing a race
    Not by telling a lie
    Why did he fight?’
To have spat acid lungs for me seems a stroke of luck
I just looked out once to see my lucky star soaring
Only to see it plunge, as if it was telling me to duck
In vain - cheekbones opened in warm wet welcoming
Steel kissed my eyes promising a mask worthy the opera
It’s better to lose one’s face than give up honour, is it?
Since when is slaughter honourable and proper?
    ‘My son lost his face
    Not by losing a race
    Not by telling a lie
    Why did he fight?’

She never deserved that heartbreak. It feels like something that's ingrained in my family. I wish my grandmother never lost her sons and my dad never lost his brothers. The lyrics “What a waste, army dreamers.” Remind me of him, his dream was this, he thrived for this and struggled many rough years, but what he got was death, he died on the battle field, I find myself visiting this song and even though it was created a few months ago, I think it’s relatable for me.

As a teenager, I had this thought. That I wished that armies weren't necessary. That they didn't exist. I said this to someone who was an EMT, who went to work with the military. I understand better why he didn't like that sentiment. A halfbaked, incomplete thought from a kid. Not even from their country. Who is very privileged.
As an adult, I still feel that way, though. I wish that armies and the military were not necessary. That no one had to take up arms to protect the lives of innocents from people who want to do harm. That no one had to make friendships so strong that you'd die for each other, only for that to actually happen because of the occupation. That no one had to come home feeling disconnected from the people around them because still they carry around all that horror from being deployed. I can better form the thought now. And at the end of it, remember to thank those people for taking on the things that break so many, keeping millions of people like me from having to go through it.
I wish I could apologize to that person.

I used to listen to this song and thought it was about something romantic, melancholic, or even sweetly sad, but now the reality reveals itself in a devastating and irreparable way. Kate was extremely wise to create this song exactly in the context of the time it was released. The reality of war is incomprehensibly cruel and hard to digest, especially when we think of the human suffering of young lives that are destroyed, and the families left with an eternal hole in their hearts. It's unbearably sad to think of so many young men going to war, carrying dreams and hopes, believing they're fighting for something greater, or simply hoping to come back with the sense of a mission accomplished, only for it all to be brutally torn away. With that, everything is taken from them: their lives, their futures, the chance to grow, to err, to learn, to form families, and to live in peace. Each of these men had a story, a smile, a unique way of seeing the world, precious memories... and all of that is undone, often by something even the people involved don’t fully understand or control. The cruelty of this reality is painful and hard to accept, because we all know that the suffering caused by these events (and so many other violences around the world) is indescribable, irreparable, and irreversible. Yet the war machine keeps turning, muffling the voices of those who suffer, the voices of mothers who will never again hear, see, or speak to their sons. Honestly, I don't think I'll ever listen to this song the same way again, but the art that Kate Bush managed to create with it, so melancholic and tragic, remains one of the greatest works of reflection on human suffering. Simply incredible.

This hit hard because deep down inside I kinda want to join law enforcement , I didn’t tell anyone. My parents want me to be a doctor or a lawyer, father says lawyer, my mother says doctor bc I’m good at bio and an excellent debater or so they say. I think both medicine and law are fun but I’m indecisive and don’t know what career path to pick. I’m seventeen and next year will be my last high school year. What sparked this sudden urge to join law enforcement was this game I got as a gift a week or two ago. My father gifted me the latest RE4 remake since I was doing well on my exams. The game is really fun, I have a weak heart but I personally felt a shift in myself. Like I’m not as frightened by things as I was before. I may not be someone that knows the insides of the military and how they operate. But I'm pretty sure they have people that would manage reports and logistics. After all, an army can't sustain itself and it has to have someone plot out supply line routes and whatnot. Furthermore, if you're someone that can speak multiple language I'm sure it'd be great to have you as a radio operator to intercept any comms and gather intel.

When I hear this song, I think of him. He's almost 12 years old.

Is it just be or does the song seemed rushed at times? Like how war rushes many to an early death?
Its starts slow and peaceful and gets more and more turbulent, until it settles down, and eventually ends. Even the humming at the end that sounds like someone crying. So sad.

Sorry but you seem like the troll here, since you've been making snarky remarks about people's ties to the song.

There's so many boys who died without wars, just serving at military service, sometimes by misunderstandings between soldiers, sometimes by injuries that they're got while in military service. Sometimes by keeping the area they're forced to keep from criminals. I feel sad for all soldiers who died by wars or just by being in military service. 😢 You all heroes! RIP 🕊
