5 Things I Wish I Knew BEFORE I Started Composting In My Small Back Yard

  • It seems like there's a massive appetite from people wanting to compost on a small scale. Even though there's a lot of aspirational gardening videos on UA-cam (huge plots, enormous resources) the desire for people to figure out what they can do with what they already have is significant.
    The feedback in the form of comments was really useful in structuring this follow up video to last week.

    My water barrel in plastic cracked during the winter so I repurposed it as a compost bin. It won't be as efficient as my real hot compost bin, but with compost, you can never have enough. Waste not want not. :D It gets pretty cold in the winter here (Norway zone 4), but I don't mind as long as I get a portion of black gold to use in my beds every spring.

    Back when I had a yard, we would take a galvanized steel garbage can, drill 3/4" holes at the bottom and about two-thirds up the sides, then bury it so that only about 8 inches or so was exposed. This is where we disposed of kitchen and garden waste. We had two like this, so that by the time one was full, the other was full of compost! Oh, and we used bungee cords to keep the lid on and racoons out.

      Do you generate much woody stuff at the allotment? How is the composting going? You could do one in the polytunnel and help heat it! 😃

      @@tecmow4399 fruit tree prunings are the main brown but I'm really too lazy to chop them up smell. Mostly bring cardboard up from home. The hot bin is sitting at about 25°C but I'm so bad for just chucking bits in whole and never breaking them up. I started with a base layer of wood chip and hose manure to get things going!

    Some people are truly ignorant...I enjoy how you pronounce compost. We are from different areas of the country/world and how we speak to each other comes off as an accent. Nonetheless, you handled that ignoramus well. We know what the topic of the video is and it was very informative and helpful. Thank you. The comepot (hilarious)!!! 😂😂😂

    Honestly, some people are so picky, basically do what works for you and learn as you go along, I have been gardening for 30 years or more and we can invent some pretty spectacular messes that actually work! The problem is, when people watch so called 'garden experts' droning on about ratios, aeration and all the scientific methods, we forget, that nature does all the work for us basically and all the old methods that worked for our ancestors are getting lost because of these experts. I say, stuff em, do what makes you happy and don't worry about all those nay sayers!

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399  4 місяці тому +5

      Exactly, try something and adjust as you need to. I just wanted to share a principle that worked for me so other people could take something from it. If the ratios put people off trying entirely then theyre not helpful. I do keep them in mind but you’re right, theyre often used in an attempt for the presenter to elevate their intellectual standing

    Thanks for these videos on compote/ compost 😉
    I'm in Oregon, a similar climate, and appreciate vids from gardeners in different areas - different pronunciation is part of the fun!
    We have a couple of neighbors who like to use their weed blowers, and i asked them to leave the leaves in our yard for me/ my garden (which they did) ...
    Switching one lot into a bag for finishing partway through is a good idea with in a smaller system! We've got a bin from our local garbage and recycling company, and i keep leaves and cardboard nearby to layer in.

    Well if it works, it works
    Just going back to the original hotbin composter system. There could be some tweaks to make it even easier (?). Rather than being "man with a stick", woodchip mixed should create air gaps in your mixture.
    Counter intuitively if you add in a small hole in the top then you should get a chimney effect. Air being drawn in from the bottom weaving its way through, penetrating the gaps, created by the woodchips and aerating the pile. This works on the one I have built. Then less need for mixing.
    Although I admit when I add in fresh material I do like to mix it a bit, but you can buy those cheap chemical gauntlets and get right it.
    Lets not get into the term "come pot", if that is how you are spelling it 🤐🤣

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399  5 місяців тому +1

      The chimney effect sounds interesting, I’ll have to go look at that. Let’s avoid that term in this context, agreed 😂

    I think people missed the point of the video.. The point wasn't to get a fridge, it was that anything insulated, with a good mix of green stuff and brown stuff, will make decent compost, even in a small garden. Use what you find, ask your neighbours if you don't have a large tree or grass, use a brain cell or two.
    I also really can't believe someone told you, you say compost incorrectly..

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399  5 місяців тому +4

      Yes that’s very much what I was getting at! I just happen to live in a city where there are hundreds of fly tipped fridges. Insulate it with whatever you have in abundance that will do the trick. I don’t think the grammar police types ever understand the irony of what they believe to be a display of intelligence. Thanks for the thoughtful comment and hopefully see you in the comment section again soon 😊

    ...and only use the mower to chop it up IF you have the kind of mower with a collection bin! Otherwise, you will be stuck with raking all that up onto a tarp, and then dragging the tarp over to the garden compost bin.

    I would assume the concern regarding toxins in the fridge would be the refrigerant leaking (being fly tipped the pipes at the back could easily be damaged. I can't remember how if the gasses used now are dangerous, or if the pipe was simply cut and the gas allowed to escape, if it would continue to be a problem)

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399  6 місяців тому +2

      The gases had already escaped on this one because a scrap collector had already cut all the pipes and removed the compressor. A fridge engineer mentioned the same thing too so certainly something to watch out for. Thank you for pointing this out

    Can I keep composting in the winter even when it’s really wet and cold. Will it still heat up? I have a three pallet station and like two free to turn everything from time to time

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399  5 місяців тому +3

      You can definitely still compost all year. You tend to have a little bit less stuff to put in it with things growing less. I find it’s a useful time to accumulate brown materials like leaves and chipped up branches from cutting back trees and hedges. It might not get as hot as when you put a load of fresh green materials that are in abundance in the growing season. Mine still gets warm with food scraps and coffee grounds
