This is right up my alley. Decided to make this year my year to get serious about putting more miles together after not doing much running in my life at all besides sports. Metal to the core, beer brewer and drinker, and now trail runner. Need to link up with y'all. I'm local to Bristol, TN.
I hear ya man, I'm trying to rebuild my running legs and overall fitness this year as well. Love this, I have heard of the group for years, but not yet made a race....this all makes sense, Jason is a VA boy, so am I...I got to get down there! The reason I started my YT channel was to help people, show them if I can do it, they can too, to motivate and inspire those who wonder if they can do it....My channel is the Yes to them. This video got recommended to me when it came out, and because of it I’m currently signed up and training for this year’s race. I have only ran halves (no full), and since I was turning 50 this year (today to be exact) you gave me idea of doing a 50k at 50. So thanks for an awesome video and I’m currently up here suffering on the local trails of Knoxville because of it.

@@TrailRunningZen Update I got hurt last year (bad high ankle sprain in late August) and I had a DNS. That said I did run the Dam Yeti 55K in June and I think I have survived my training this year (one more day to go), so it looks like Sunday morning I will finally be able to run it. Thanks again your for your video. I will be cussing you Sunday at around 24 tho...

To be a high school kid able to decide for himself that he loves skateboarding and loves to run in the woods and will do both unless some myopic adult decides he can't is to be a lucky high school kid. That's rare.
You're right, his mother was super supportive, there were a lot of stories he told about his childhood that didn't make the final cut about how his parents choose vacation spots that would give him a great place to skate. On the flipside Jason's the type of guy that probably would've just did his own thing in spite of myopic adults, lol
Blaming your parents is valid until age 20, after that it's on you to grow. With or without your parents. I surpassed my parents intellect level years ago

There are a few POC that do, (some are in this film), but ultrarunning does seem to be an activity dominated by white people, not sure why that is....perhaps that’d make a great subject to explore for a future documentary 🤔
