This was great when I watched it a few years ago, and then I watched it again a few weeks ago to make sure I was getting the right rails on eBay. Success! Now... what I did NOT anticipate is my rack is only 24" back-to-front and the rails are apparently for a 26½" rack. So server back to sitting on boxes for now. :( Open to any suggestions!
Are the rails you have adjusted to the minimum length? The mounting point in the back is adjustable and should slide back and forth to accommodate for racks of different depths.
I can't see where I could possibly make them any shorter. The inner rails that connect to the server are 26" long, and the outer rails extend from 26½ to 36 3/4". Alas.
This came in handy. Got my first SuperMicro server, my first rackmount server I've dealt with in person (normally the boxes I work with are in some datacenter somewhere, not my basement!) and I wasn't sure how the rails even worked. I at least thought to ask if it came with them. It didn't, so I ordered a rail kit to go along with the used server.
for sake of reference.... I bought a Compellent sc030(pre/early dell) and it has the NON rev B...... this thing was socket 771 era, not sure if that matches up with anything else but figured it might be helpful
Is the rail kit with (3) in the part number not going to break on a CSE 846 or CSE 847 chassis because it isn't in the compatibility list? only the shorter rail kit the one with the (7) inside the part number has the 846 and 847 in the compatibility list, but that rail-kit is too short to take the top cover off? I'm not sure what to order now...
Supermicro does not officially support using those rails on the 846/847 chassis. That said, I use them on my 846 chassis and have not had any problems.
I had the same question in my mind. I checked and both the 53 and the 57 use the same inner rail (the 115) and the difference is just in the outer rails (113 for the 53 vs. 117 for the 57). I was wondering if using a 53 and allowing a fully loaded 847 (all 36 bays loaded with HDDs, which are obviously heavier) to be pulled all the way out would stress the 53 enough to the point of failure. That's the only thing that I can think of that would justify Supermicro differentiating the two.
Hi i have a pair of the blue rails and a CSE846 chassis, is there any video of these actually being attached ? i just cant seem to figure out how this would go.
It should be pretty straight forward to attach the inner rails to the chassis. However, if you have a very old 846 chassis, these rails will not work with the older chassis which has "hooks" that are too wide for the newer rails. Is that what you have?
i have issues sliding out the inner rails. i can't seem to extend the rails enough for the latch to be accessible. also once i managed to release the latch somehow, but still could not slide out the rails... could not find any video on it anywhere...
@@ArtofServer turns out they sent me two right outer rails (and no let one), so i accidentaly slid in the left inner rail to the right outer rail. Finally managed somehow to pull it apart
No, not directly. These types of rails are designed to hook into the square hole racks. However, there are "adapter brackets" you can buy that will allow you to hook these in, and then the other side of the adapter has threaded holes for you to secure to the threaded holes of your rack. Look up Supermicro P/N MCP-290-00060-0N.
Hey! Sorry to be a bother, have you used the 53 rails with 346 chassis? It doesn't appear as compatible. A stupid question, my chasis is a cm too big for the rails, is there any way to adjust that? Thank you for your time, Vic
Do you offer a service for technical support for servers in general? I am getting these servers soon and it seems like I could really use a service like this. Thanks!
Okay so random question about these things. I just tried to install these in my server, and the rails installed in my standard 19 inch width server rack did not fit. The rails clothes in the clearance too much, are these supposed to fit a standard rack or some sort of special different type
heh. I thought I've found a solution to my rail kit problem but now I'm lost even more. I have a blue label outer rails with perfectly fine rev.b inner rains inside
I just bought a generic rail kit (comparable to MCP-290-00053-0N), went to install it on my CSE-827H-R1400B, only to notice there are no holes on the sides of the server! Okay, there are some very small holes that look like it may line up with the small offset hole shown at the top of your inner rails sitting on the table as you have them. However, they also don't look like they go all the way through, rather bottoming out with another piece of metal just barely below the hole. Have you experienced this? There is no way I can see to secure these rails, and that doesn't make me too happy!
I bought the 4U kit directly from Supermicro, part number CSE-PT26L-B, for a CSE-742 tower/4U chassis. I looked in disbelief, the entire chassis is held on the rails with 5-6 screws on each side, each screw is the smaller than a motherboard screw. How on earth are these screws going to hold 40-50Kgr I have no idea.
@@nautaki That's funny! It's also funny to look at this comment I made two years ago and what system I was working with back then. Things have changed so much in so little time...
I just bought a used pair of the blues and the inner rail doesn't seem to extend long enough for me to push the latch down to release it. I can see on the video your blue rails extend about an inch or two longer than mine judging my the mounting holes. Is this something I'm doing wrong, is there a trick to it or are the rails defective? Thank you!

Sorry, I'm not sure about that question.
MCP-290-00053-0N says its for 2 and 3u, which do I get for an 846?
I have used it with my 846 and it seems to work just fine. But Supermicro does not officially support it.
