I bought Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike because it had "Tales of" in the title and I took the risk that it was connected to the series that Symphonia (at the time, my only Tales) was part of. Didn't know a thing about it, just brought it. I loved it so much that I decided to get the 360 game and that remained my absolute 2nd favorite Tales until Arise (which just barely edged it out). I love this movie still and cry every time I watch.

Ok here is my analysis: Flynn might be feeling that his father’s death was a result to him disobeying orders and because of that he became convinced that a rebellious, anti- establishment way of thinking like yuri’s is not the best way to resolve things and will only end up hurting lots of innocents and the loss of many lives , he is trying to improve things from within the system, by improving the imperial knights from within which then will lead to the improvement of everything else .
Also in a way , Flynn is trying to protect yuri from going down the same self destructive path that his father went into during their time as knights together, he saw yuri’s way of thinking as similar to his dad which would have led yuri and others to cause disorderly conduct within the ranks of the knights which would have only served to make things worse for everyone, he tried to make yuri see things in his way and stop him from doing something that would get him , and possibly others killed.
It is possible also that yuri by the end of the film understood Flynn point of view and in part agreed with Flynn ideals, he definitely feels that if anyone can improve things within the ranks of the empire, Flynn is the guy to do so , but he couldn’t stand idly knowing and seeing the misery that is happening and knowing that he left the knights, it is also possible that one of the reasons why he left is because he felt that he would have been an obstacle to Flynn goals if he stayed with the knights, that Flynn wouldn’t achieve the changes he desires with yuri conflicting ideals with his , so he removed himself in order for Flynn to lead the knights without the burden of someone butting heads with him

I personally think Flynn was attacking Garista in a blind rage. Garista is pretty much confirmed as the one who killed Flynn's dad and hours earlier his actions killed Niron Fedrock. And Garista shows no desire to slow down. Flynn even seems to have a bit of a struggling look on his face before drawing his sword and rushing the bastard. This was definitely in my mind a rage fueled action by Flynn. Though i do question why after this Flynn wasn't more suspicious on the Empire given how Garista stated his actions were possibly known by others. Then again Flynn spent 3 years later being groomed among knights so maybe that's why.

I think for me, there were minor continuity errors that bugged me, I can't remember them off the top of my head since I haven't touched the movie and game in a hot sec. Mostly concerning the guilds. (apparently, he forgets what a guild is(?) in 2 years or something.) Overall I enjoyed the movie a lot, and this video speaks to some of the questions I had.

First of all I've finished ToV:DE yesterday and I really really loved it.
Unfortunately the only thing that made me like this movie is the animations and the character designs. And baby Repede of course~
I think the story has a lot of flaws especially when you've played the game first,
Also Flynn's backstory about his father was supposed to be revealed in the game iirc, not the prequel movie itself, and he and Yuri were supposed to be like the best of friends and not bitter rivals in the movie, it honestly washes down the part when a rift was dividing between Flynn and Yuri's morals in the game. I really agree with your point on the part where Flynn played a part in killing his father's killer, Garrista. It does add a lot of layers on his character however I wish they explored more into it in the game.
Alexei was written as a person who does not care for his subordinates and fellow knights even though the game and the Raven spinoff manga ((ToV: Empty Mask, (I suggest you read it! It's amazing!)) portray him otherwise, he honestly is shown as a man caring about them but the manga sheds more light on why he's acting that way in the game.
Rita was also shown to know about Aer Krenes as well even though she wasn't supposed to know a thing about it until Duke explains to her their purpose.
    Overall I think the movie was enjoyable at least! Subbed and followed on twt! I'm glad people are still talking about ToV to this day, it's my first Tales game and I'm in the process of starting the other ones ;;;

You're not wrong, this movie definitely has its flaws. I think it can still be an enjoyable entry to Vesperia's universe, but maybe it shouldn't be taken as "canon" without a grain of salt.
I have actually read some of The Empty Mask! (There's someone translating it on tumblr iirc, they do an incredible job!) It's definitely a fascinating read, since we learn so much not even just about Raven but about a whole bunch of other characters (egg. Don Whitehorse and Alexei). I wish it could have been officially released in the west, I'd have loved to see that whole story!
Thanks for the comment and the support! I agree, it's really nice to see people talking about Vesperia (especially since it felt like such an underappreciated game when I first played it).

I know I do lots of superheroes references that it’s annoying , but hear me out on this one , in a way yuri and Flynn are similar in their conflictive ideology to Superman and Batman, they both have the same goals but approach them differently, and they are mostly in disagreement on how they handle things , but remain friends .
While Superman/ Flynn believe in working with and within the system and the authority, Batman/ Yuri take a more vigilante , outlaw approach ( Batman still doesn’t kill though and yuri do )
Also , much like Batman, Yuri did gather a surrogate family around him , Karol is his robin, raven is Alfred, Judith is cat woman, Rita is batgirl, repitde is Ace the bat hound , I got nothing for patty and Estelle, but you see the point

Sounds to me that you favor Flynn over yuri since you talked about his side of the story more than yuris

I actually tend to prefer Yuri over Flynn, to be honest! It's just that the information we learn about Flynn in the movie had me curious, and I felt like talking about it! Yuri's story in the film is amazing, don't get me wrong, but I think it mostly confirmed for me what I knew about him from the game, as well as giving some nice background information. I think we learn a lot about Flynn from the movie, especially coming from the position of someone who is only recently getting more information about Flynn from the game since he wasn't as prominent in the Xbox version of it.
