Hi everyone, I hope you are staying safe and healthy and not panicking 💕 there's an r/MerriamStyle subreddit if you want to talk about body types and colours! You can say things like 'warm and radiant' without confusing everyone 😂
I am a theatrical romantic body type, but a romantic face type, and my face only looks good with a little amoud of make up. Face powder with some pigmentation, blush, lip gloss, a little bit of eye makeup, and it is enough. Such a small thing as black eyeliner makes me look 10 years older.
It really makes sense that rounded types aren't properly served by mostly matte makeup. I can only speak for me, but I've always felt that matte looks were too heavy on my face. Like even the texture of matte foundation was enough to drag my features down. It's almost too harsh for rounded types! I think satin matte is the most I can do rn. Or matte cheeks and everything else sheeny, lol
@@813amanda I have a theory that matte makeup _needs_ some sort of structure to drape across, otherwise it just slides down. Kinda like wearing a big bulky sweater. If you're shoulders are too narrow or sloped, the sweater will fall right off. Another rounded characteristic, lol
Yes! Absolutely! The hardest part is bringing lines and colors together. And I find it even more difficult to Shop for clothes, now, that i learned so much about body geometry. Because you know, what suits you, but it's just not there. It's never ideal!! 😰
I am Warm and delicate and I see that cool and delicate colors also look nice on me. Some cool colors also don’t look that bad at all, warm bright colors look the worst so really there are a lot of other options outside your undertone range.
Merriam, thank you sooooooo much for talking about beveled types with sharpness, because I always felt highlight looked odd on me, it just look over the top on me... thank you so much, I just realized that now! also, the smokey eyeliner look MUCH more beautiful than the sharper one. It just click me out somenthing I didn't was seeing ☺️🥰❤
This is THE video I’ve been looking for! Both questions, and the way you answered them, helped me so much! I’m a dramatic classic and always found it frustrating why I couldn’t do bright colors. Darkening the colors and keeping the lines crisp makes so much sense for us sharp-lined ladies. Also, I’m a dramatic classic who’s cool delicate coloring always clashed with my lines....until I did exactly what you said- went with medium tones! Medium grey is my lifeline! Black looks good with my lines but washes out my skin tone so a saturated grey (no mottled or faded fabrics!) with black shoes, black trim, or black jewelry gives me the drama I need without overwhelming my delicate coloring. A dark muted green looks better than a rich emerald green. It’s hard to tell the difference sometimes but I’m getting the hang of it. Dark muted tones for the win!
So this clenched the fact that I am indeed a softened type! I look terrible in matte, glowy is my friend. Even glitter in small amounts (corners of eyes) ... shhhh ... Thanks for this, because with the new system I started doubting if I had enough softness to even bother. It's either softened sharp with a dash of blended, or sharp plus a lot of soft classic for me. Also good to know that warm and delicate doesn't have to worry so much about colors. Considering, as you've pointed out, cool brilliant turns warm and delicate with some time on the sun. Though I think I always look like death in terracotta 😬 Just gonna stick with CB colors and transition to the less bright end of the spectrum.
I am some kind of natural with a little bit of classic features and I cannot handle highlighters but I cannot handle Matte makeup. Lip gloss is my friend and I always mix matte-ish foundation with moisturizer and somehow that little glow works out 😂
As a FN, I can’t help but love shimmer and gloss. I feel like my face looks flat without it. Charlotte Tilbury does very shimmery makeup and I think it looks beautiful on everyone.
Brandi Davis I adore CT but her makeup tends to be very warm which makes me look dead but I do have some of the few items that work for me and I adore them.
oh my god THANK YOU!!! i'm a dramatic classic and warm and delicate and i had the same problem!! this really helped me!! i love you and your channel!! :)
I wish I knew this before spending so much money on make up that I love but doesn't suit me at all and I didn't understand why T-T now I know, thank you ❣️
If you look at metamorphosis some body types were said to benefit from more contrasting colors, such as mixed types, naturals are said to look good in earthy tones etc. In my case I'm soft beveled and warm and delicate, so both are in alignment (erathy autumnal colors are great) but if you are told you need bold contrast but are delicate in coloring, you get contradicting information.
Basically, the more dynamic your body type is, the more dynamic colors you can handle (and taking on less than you can handle always produces a somewhat unsatisfying effect, even if the beholder doesn't know where it's coming from). Also, colors have a certain visual weight, so if your body has more visual weight, then you'll look better in colors that match that (mostly deep/neutral colors), and if you have more softness, you'll look better in colors that appear more weightless (brighter colors, pastels etc.).
Im a SG, medium contrast, warm and delicate. I would say matte doesnt look the best on me 🤔, i guess that proves im a soft type. Also with the colours i agree that very bright and neon colours doesnt look good. Eventhough people told me that bright red suits me which im not sure about. Some cool colours but muted, like dark navy, look good too. I cant also pull too high contrast or too low contrast. I guess that coresponds both to my body type and to my colouring. But Id say shopping for my lines is more important since im warm and delicate. Its a really interesting concept.
LuziaLucia Wow! I'm very similar to you! I think I'm a SG with medium contrast, and might be warm and delicate too! I definitely look better in satin matte but not all matte and look horrible in heavy cakey full matte foundations like Huda Beauty. Also for makeup, I feel like I always need more contrasted makeup since I might be a gamine type with a bold lip and bold eyes, anything less makes me look washed out especially muted colors. I am still trying to figure out the best colors for me and like you, I can pull off muted cool light/dark colors and can't pull off yellows or super bright warm colors. Would love to know if you have any suggestions/recommendations for clothing and coloring that has worked for you!
@@schikoti28 Ohh thats so interesting!! Thank you for writing down your experience :). I actually found out I might be FG instead haha. But still its kinda similar and I use tips for SG as well. I havent experimented with makeup that much, because I usually wear something natural. I tried bold red lip and I'm still not sure if it looked good. Like you said, gamines look better in contrast, but my colouring is so muted that I easily look washed out. And it depends hugely on the lighting. Like in dim light my contrast looks higher :D. Also any lipstick that isnt muted washes me out (it can be somewhat darker but not bright). I heard spidery lashes being recommended to gamines...but that doesnt work on me. I think wearing black&white outfit on me is too overwhelming (too much contrast) whereas wearing all light outfit is too low (my eyes are a bit darker and need some support of darker colour in my outfit). But otherwise I love mixing different colours and patterns and fabrics! I think that really works well for gamines. The specific colours are hard to figure out - I like muted warm pink, navy, olive green, even black is fine. Still not sure what are my "best colours". What I figured out in clothes is that everything has to be fitted! Or Im easily drowning in clothes. Also fabrics are better when they arent too thick and stiff (that looks very heavy on me) or too lightweight and flowy (that doesnt support my yang, but it could work for you). Also trying higher necklines (I sometimes switch my tshirts front to back if possible) can do so much! Or rolling up my trousers...having waist emphasis works well, too.
I'm an FG soft autumn, so there's a pretty stark difference in recommendations. I'm only at the beginning of my makeover, but I think for make-up it's best to stick to soft autumn recommendations, although I think I can sport black lashes OR an earthy deep red lip (not the two at once though). For clothing, FG lines are definitely great on me. Regarding colours I think I can handle contrast better if it's between complimentary colours and not light/dark; and those complimentary colours should be on the soft autumn colour wheel. The trick is to find interesting patterns in muted, warm colours - which isn't exactly easy, but not impossible. A cheap, easy way to create more detail is layering. I love to wear an unbuttoned men's shirt in the right colour, size and lenght over t-shirts and tops. The result is an androgynous look that makes me look cute and feminine.
@@enielfblerta428 Ohh this are very insightful, I love your tips! (Nowadays I'm pretty sure I'm actually FG) I actually love complimentary colours together and was thinking about using a shirt as a layer recently as well!
I'm a SG and I don't associate Kibbe type with colors. It just works for me to keep the lines and colors separate. I enjoy your videos because it's good to have some of my own ideas (I'm very new Kibbe) challenged. I've always been naturally drawn to looks and make-up colors that suit me, even at 7 y.o. (I had party makeup), but then I began to listen to all the "experts" in my 20s (00s) and I tried to follow their advice, but I always ended up tweaking my look and throughout the "nude" years, I continued to wear bright or deep lipstick and less blended eyeliner than recommended. Just like colorful lips make some women feel overdone and self conscious, I feel really insecure about choosing nude shades. My coloring is of warm-neutral/Golden Beige, black hair (few white hairs) and black-brown eyes. What people typically associate with SE Asians. Often times, finding colors that suit me in make-up and clothes, can be an issue here in Denmark (I'm Danish-American, adopted from Thailand, not a dual citizen though, just Danish), but it's getting easier.
My other comment was very long. I just remembered that yesterday I watched a video where a YTber whose coloring is similar to me, described her neutrals like that of a sunset and something just clicked! I thought neutrals don't suit me, but now I've found my neutrals.😊
I totally agree with your advice to go darker despite the natural coloration. I am a flamboyant gamine and soft summer! Such a mistake:/ Can't find perfect clothes for such combination anywhere (extramaly rarely). Either the lines fit or the colors. Heavy contrasts with accents appear to work better for me than soft and muted colors, but they are not ideal too (I look much worse in them, than a winter would look and always have to dye my hair and straighten it). Being allergic to many makeup stuff makes it even worse. But nevertheless, contrasts on the darker side work better.
oof. i think i might be a dramatic classic, warm and delicate 😅 i can throw on a matte burgundy lip with no other makeup and look so effortless! my eyes already stand out, so i just add black mascara for my ultimate lazy face. my skeleton is fairly blended yang, but my flesh is suuuuper soft and i can get away with deep but shimmery colours. i wish i could focus on the lines only, but i have so much rosacea that my face is orange and i can’t pull off cool colours as a result 😛
You look prettier every time you upload. I think you are truly embodying your elegant aesthetic that you talked about liking and it really suits you. On a different topic, as a light warm and bright with low to medium contrast, I find that it is true that I can dip into the cool spectrum of colors but I cannot ever wear muted colors around my face and darker colors can overwhelm me. But really muted even makes me feel sad and unattractive when I go there...so I don't!
Great video! I have a question for you Meriam: I’m naturally ginger, some type of gamine and warm-delicate I’m my colors - why is it that I still look good in quite a lot of dramatic attributes and can carry off cool-radiant colors to a certain extent? Is it because I’m gamine which means I can do with a little more crazy in my outfits or because of my naturally red hair? Do you have a theory?
Hello, what about classic pls, you didnt talk about us here + in one of your videos you said that classic can add 1 thing in their style from other body types and it will look good on them and show their personnality, can this thing be colors ?
I‘m a Soft Natural and I have a high contrast, fair skin and dark eyes and hair. Should I just wear soft colors? I love a bright blue, a bright red or even black over all and it suits my complexion very well as a winter type 🤷🏻♀️ Pastells suits me too but I don’t wanna look every time soft and sensual 🤔
You said that if someone has sharpned bone structure they should go a bit darker. I guess that the more softness you have/ the more rounded you are, the lighter you can go no? Because as a mixed type with softness I still look better in darker colors. I'm cool and radiant, more than delicate, but my best colors are on the darker sides. I feel like for some cool colors I can go for lighter and/or more delicate version (pinks/purples) but not all (muted/light greens and blues are not the best on me) so I wonder whether it's due to a coloring matter or a color+body type matter?
@@kareng.7773 Maybe that's why. It might just be personal preference because I've noticed softer types look good in light colours even if they're high contrast. But it's not a hard and fast rule! If dark colours suit you then don't give them up :)

I tried color blocking, as suggested for mixed types, using more of light warm colors like Vanilla and Turquoise and Almond Green and Coral, but that looks...em...weird on me...
