Hey Matt, great job on this one! I wanted to say I appreciated you bringing up how much of a slog the Rocket section is in Crystal, that’s nuts! Maybe the rest of them could still be there but just face away? And I’d def support making them get higher level Pokémon to equal out the old experience. But that’s just nuts, that’s so much unnecessary filler in the game.
It would be more trouble that it's worth. The reality is that it does cost time but the amount of time to mod it out, balance it, test it out, and get it into position to where I thought it was good enough, I'd just have to redo the runs over again and it becomes a never ending cycle. I can't change too much because some people don't think in game time is a serious metric. I could win 45 Scott races in a row but people only think you are worth a shit if you just parrot his exact ruleset every video. Mini rant but the solo running community sucks on that front haha.

Now all these years later and I'd rather have the Kangaskhan because he's so obnoxious to catch.

I think the only visual things I could think of to make this better would've been the very messed up option of just. Replacing the Kangaskhan sprite with Cubone when they go down, and the cute thing of giving the baby a box of fries for the leftovers. The double crown and pink bow though were great, and thanks again for doing this run.

It did pretty well but doing this and some other tests brought me to a bit of a crisis. It's about that time of year where I'm a little burned out and I feel like potentially we are going to see 99% of Crystal runs be in the 3h 40m to 3h 50m range with very little variance and that makes me sad but we'll just have to do more runs to truly see. Farfetch'd is the earliest SD user and in gen 1 it did great there and Scizor is great too! I think even Scyther will be pretty good in here as well. Glad to see you paying attention! This was an older build. It has been corrected and I just double checked on the recent Granbull stream I did a couple of weeks ago! I play a big chunk of runs and edit later and this one had been sitting around for a minute.
It depends on the person but doing 500 battles and being high level feels like a waste of time to me personally. I find my enjoyment from seeing how fast a Pokemon can go and seeing where it leads after trimming down routes a few times. Anyone can beat Red casually strolling through the game without caring about the time or how many battles they do but you aren't going to see many 3h 42m in game times out there.
It’s always weird. You’ll hear someone say Fire Blast is bad then say Mega Horn is pretty good when they are the same. 70% is not my favorite but 50% is at least interesting.
Matt, would you agree that your ideal niche in this community is to be the very best? I feel like your channel’s vibe, your particular style, is “I played this Pokemon as fast as it could possibly be played”. Are you intentionally trying to portray yourself as the authority on fastest possible times? I mean, I don’t mind if you are, but that is the vibe I personally get from most of your videos.
I would disagree. Maybe at some point in life I wanted to prove I was good and could hang but then I nearly won back to back Scott races (Alakazam crit lol), and that's all the personal validation I need for a lifetime. I'd say the vibe is that I'm someone that enjoys and studies speedruns and I base my runs off of that so when I make content, that's the mindset and I just explain things through that lens. That's the start and end of it. I don't care if little Timmy does one awful run based off someone else's rules or if Pokemon speedrun champion Chad does 78 runs. I'm just doing my own thing and having fun in my own lane. I would never say I'm the best or the authority at anything. UA-cam doesn't mean that much to me to have such an arrogant view on something that's just a hobby and isn't my identity.
Lmao. Counting the Granbull stream, this is only the 6th optimized Crystal run under the new rules. Unless it's worse than Forretress, I'd say that's a pretty safe bet lol.
Regarding your excessive misses with comet punch...I have a "Conspiracy theory" that pokemon have a hidden accuracy stat that varies with IVs. I Can't "prove" this.....but in a recent HG/SS run I had a dratini i picked up from the casino...but it had a "naughty" nature and couldn't hit with ice beam to save its life(literally, as I got pissed and shoved it into the PC box hell fainted) Thoughts? I feel like your gas can here might be under that category....I know i've had other pokemon that I abruptly retired due to this, but I drink a lot so I Can't remember.
My thoughts is that is just anecdotal evidence. I’ve seen the game code and it’s publicly available to go through and nothing of the sort exists. Ice Beam even has 100% accuracy so it’s impossible for it to miss unless something happened in the battle.
For sure. There's rom hacks for all 3 gens to have physical/special split if that's your thing but I just play the games as they are with minor quality of life changes.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 yeah I think I knew that from your older videos, I think my mind just jumped to the strong Pokémon I think about dying to a x4 weakness most easily.

About time fury cutter gets some respect on its name🎉
Literally heard someone the other day say it was trash. I guess it's easy to say when you just overlevel.
Citizen Kangaskhan!
All of my 80+ year old viewers get it!
Kangaskhan a classic and i have used one before
Nice!
Dynamic punch is the focus miss of gen 2
It’s always weird. You’ll hear someone say Fire Blast is bad then say Mega Horn is pretty good when they are the same. 70% is not my favorite but 50% is at least interesting.
Matt, would you agree that your ideal niche in this community is to be the very best? I feel like your channel’s vibe, your particular style, is “I played this Pokemon as fast as it could possibly be played”. Are you intentionally trying to portray yourself as the authority on fastest possible times? I mean, I don’t mind if you are, but that is the vibe I personally get from most of your videos.
Not to hate but there’s better youtubers in what u saying 🫡🙏🏻
Name a couple Carlito. Just in terms of skills. I'd like to know what an anonymous user thinks on that subject.
To be the very best? Like no one ever was???
@@realperson69 exactly!
9:20 would picking up some Sriracha not help fire punch? 🔥 🤛 haha
Not sure what floor I'd pick it up on.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I’ve started watching your Charmander Live and you mentioned about it on that.
Ha, I don't even remember what I said in my last stream, much less one from last year.
Got myself a sody pop and I’m hoping to get the pinned comment… LET’S GOOOO!!
I've been doing this for a long time and I've never had anyone ask to be the pinned comment lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 for real? I’m a bit of a newb and I’ve had like 4 people ask me lol
It must be the age range.
29:27 What is this from? I'd love to know what music this is.
Pokemon Coral, a rom hack. Excellent soundtrack!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Thanks! I’ll check it out.
If Kangaskhan isn't top 5, I'll be shocked.
Lmao. Counting the Granbull stream, this is only the 6th optimized Crystal run under the new rules. Unless it's worse than Forretress, I'd say that's a pretty safe bet lol.
Another playlist done
Almost to the end!
Ice vs Lance? As second time Spa is useful
Nah, it was Koga. Something has to resist return and be double weak to special for it to be worth it with 40 base special attack.
It’s like if a Kangaroo was actually a dinosaur
Edit so I don’t leave too many comments: I love the 2nd pink bow on the baby.
I can't say I get it but I respect your decision to say it lol.
Let's go ! 🦘🦘🦘
Get it!
Regarding your excessive misses with comet punch...I have a "Conspiracy theory" that pokemon have a hidden accuracy stat that varies with IVs. I Can't "prove" this.....but in a recent HG/SS run I had a dratini i picked up from the casino...but it had a "naughty" nature and couldn't hit with ice beam to save its life(literally, as I got pissed and shoved it into the PC box hell fainted)
Thoughts? I feel like your gas can here might be under that category....I know i've had other pokemon that I abruptly retired due to this, but I drink a lot so I Can't remember.
My thoughts is that is just anecdotal evidence. I’ve seen the game code and it’s publicly available to go through and nothing of the sort exists. Ice Beam even has 100% accuracy so it’s impossible for it to miss unless something happened in the battle.
Chuck Brotha!!
Just Chuckin' around.
I was with family today couldn't comment earlier but here I am
Videos are forever!
Is there a Gen. 2 patch? That would allow you to fix the physical special split
I don’t think it’s broken but playing gens 1-3 means no split and I’m fine with it. I don’t want the game to be that different.
Not a patch par se but you can do it by editing the assembly code and compiling.
For sure. There's rom hacks for all 3 gens to have physical/special split if that's your thing but I just play the games as they are with minor quality of life changes.
Is the other special move thunder punch vs a gyarados?
Edit: sadge
So close but return needs to be resisted for it to be out damaged!
Chuck Brother!
Appreciate it!
Engagement, engage!
Appreciate it!
Uhhh Lance. Liar with Fliers. That’s my guess. And my third comment, so…
The fire punch should have tipped you off!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I saw Ice Punch on the learnset and didn’t think it was a red herring!
I generally make the condensed learnset before I even do the first run. It's more or less 'what I think will be useful' not the actual learnset.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 yeah I think I knew that from your older videos, I think my mind just jumped to the strong Pokémon I think about dying to a x4 weakness most easily.
Dizzy Punch It All
Lmao, Dizzy Punch won't be used a single time.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I was saddened whilst watching
But i do like the fact Kangaskhan is a better boxer then Hitmonchan up until gen 4.
1 more punch in gen 1
more special in 2 and 3.
And Mega Kangaskhan was broken due too power-up punch in gen 6.
Yea mega Kang was great. You just learn dizzy punch way too late for it to be of any use.
Hi Matt!
H
Ice punch lance
Decent guess but no dice.
Fire punch the steelix?
I felt I covered why I didn’t use it in the video!
Karen?
?
I meant koga lol. You asked which trainer that kangeskahns sp. Att. Stat would be useful against. Karen was my bad guess
That's correct! I was confused. The no context name of an Elite 4 member had me like 'what?'.
