- Osher Rainforest is an indoor rainforest at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. There are free flying butterflies galore in a San Francisco's rainforest. This inside public exhibit at Cal Academy is perfect for exploring or family time.
This four-story indoor rainforest is one of the most famous exhibits at the Academy. Guests step inside a lush 90-foot-diameter glass dome filled with 1,600+ live plants and animals including 250+ free-flying birds and butterflies. You can come face-to-face with two blue-and-yellow macaws, poison-dart frogs, sun beetles, leafcutter ants, brilliant blue morpho butterflies and more exciting species. Descend four floors down via elevator to the Flooded Forest tunnel, where you’ll walk through a 100,000-gallon freshwater tank filled with tropical fish.
The dome maintains temperatures of 82-85° F, and a special misting system ensures a 65% or above humidity. A spiraling ramp, leading up to the top, passes through samples of rainforest flora and fauna from Borneo, Madagascar, and Costa Rica (representing the three areas of the world with the most extant rainforest: Southeast Asia, Africa, and Central and South America).
The Academy of Science recently re-opened this exhibit after a 3 month closure. The three-month closure was needed to clean the exhibit and make repairs to the dome. It required all of the animals-except for the tropical fish-to be temporarily relocated. Imagine that task!
The Osher Rainforest exhibit is included with the price of daily admission at the California Academy of Sciences.
Osher Rainforest opens 30 minutes after the museum opens Monday-Saturday.
Monday-Saturday, 10 am-4:45 pm
Sunday, 11 am-4:45 pm

What an incredible recreation of a tropical rain forest in the 'Rainforest and Butterfly Avery', California! It's size, maintenance and accuracy with respect to the weather, flora and fauna is mindboggling. Omg, the macaw 🦜greeted you and friendly butterflies🦋 on you back and knuckle! Hats off to the Cal Academy workers in San Francisco for creating and maintaining the rain forest! Those who grew up here got to go to the old Academy which was nice too but the newest version is stunning. Thank you for the great video and telling us about the flora and fauna!

I really am impressived by the wide diversity and especially all the butterflies in their different sizes residing there! Seeing places like this amaze me, because although i am strictly against captivity, places like these allow humans to experience the animals and flora and eventually care more about their environment!
