From Fort to Château: The Rich History of Saint-Louis in Old Quebec

- Welcome to Hai Hai Channel! Today, let’s go together to the Saint-Louis Forts and Châteaux National Historic Site located in Old Quebec City. This place is packed with history. Picture this: beneath the Dufferin Terrace, you’ll find what used to be the heart of colonial Quebec from 1620 to 1834. This place was where the French and later the British governors lived and ran things.
It all started with Samuel de Champlain, who built a wooden fort here in 1620 to protect the colony. Later, Governor Frontenac replaced it with a stone château in the late 1600s. This fort and château went through a lot - they were attacked, rebuilt, and expanded many times. Notably, the British laid siege to it in 1690 and then took over after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759.
When the British took control, they kept using the château. They made some changes, and it became even grander before it was destroyed by fire in 1834.
Today, the site is an archaeological treasure trove. You can walk among the remains of the old fortifications and see the foundations and artifacts from both the French and British periods. There are interactive displays and panels that tell you all about the history and significance of what you're seeing.
Guided tours offered by Parks Canada are fantastic. They share in-depth stories about the governors, military events, and everyday life in colonial Quebec. They also have educational programs and activities, making it a great spot for families.
And let’s not forget the location. It’s beneath Dufferin Terrace, which is a popular promenade with stunning views of the St. Lawrence River and Old Quebec. The whole area is steeped in history, and the views are just beautiful.
The Saint-Louis Forts and Châteaux National Historic Site is crucial for understanding Quebec's role in North American history. It shows how French and British heritage shaped the region and offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. It's a must-visit to truly appreciate Canadian history.
