    A good chair is a must. I use an adjustrite. The height is adjustable and it folds up so it can be portable.
    Also, a light for the music stand.

    Excellent video, Wendy! As a cellist who is about to graduate from a conservatory, I can confirm that these are must-haves.
    Another thing I would recommend for more advanced cellists is the CelloMind course (or something similar for mastering warm-ups). It is basically a left-hand focused textbook that has tons of intonation and warm-up exercises. It even comes with demonstrations on the website from young world-class cellists. You should definitely consider it because I find something like that to be so helpful!
    An alternative to the iPad is obviously any other tablet. Tablets are great for IMSLP in particular because you can simply download most music and draw on PDF's. There is also software that can turn the page for you in case you are interested in looking into that.
    Most tuners and metronomes are good just on the phone, but if a phone distracts you, there are some really good metronome/tuners.
    Peg dope is really handy if you find that your tuning pegs are not staying. Also, you should typically change your strings when the weather starts stabilizing in mid-spring.
    I love Kaplan rosin. It is a good alternative because it lasts a long time, comes in a convenient case, and is not too expensive given the quality.
    If anyone has any more recommendations, let us know! I love seeing comments and videos that help out cellists everywhere (new or experienced!)

      What advice would you give a beginner with small hands? I am 60, and have been playing for 3 months and I have a terrible time with extensions thus far. My hands on piano, stretch about 1/4 inch short of an octave from pinkie to thumb. Is this just a matter of practice and something that can be overcome, or should I consider switching to a 3/4 size cello? My hands ache terribly after playing, my hands and fingers are not strong, but I am trying to build up strength in my fingers and hands. Any advice would be much appreciated. I do not want to give up. :)

    • @theDUBMARK
      @theDUBMARK 3 роки тому +2

      @@carolann4087 I would recommend playing a 3/4 size cello! There is no difference with its sound, and sometimes it is less expensive than a full size. They also sell 7/8 cellos if I am not mistaken.
      The main reason that I would recommend this to you is that your hands ache terribly. If you notice that, I would say that you are doing more harm than good, and it is not worth the risk of getting hand cramps which could be permanent if you keep that up.
      I am so happy to hear that you are trying to build up the strength in your hands and that you are willing to persevere. I am also so happy that you picked up the cello recently - what a wonderful choice. Because you are building strength, there is no harm in considering a 3/4 or 7/8 size cello at all. The spacing is smaller yet the sound is the same.
      Thanks for reaching out, and feel free to reach out if you ever have any more questions about anything.

    Thanks Wendy for the really informative video! I do hope that you will do an "Apps for cello" video sometime. If you do that video though, could you please include some apps in your list that are available for Android? I know that you won't have as much expertise there but I don't currently use Apple products.
    As for the products in your video, I'm probably going to get myself a Manhasset music stand in the near future because my current flimsy foldable stand just isn't cutting it. We used Manhasset stands when I was in school but I never thought about getting one for home at all, partly because I assumed they were more expensive than they are.
    An idea that I had for another video would be to expand on your advice on what resources new cello players should use. The tip for the "Essential Elements" books is good because I think it is overwhelming figuring out where to get started. Myself, I'm relearning how to play cello after not playing for years and having trouble figuring out what learning material to use. I'm actually surprised how much I remember but eventually I'll probably need to get a tutor.

      @@sexymanicou3403 I have never ever seen anyone play the with the scroll on their right shoulder at all and I don't even see why you would need to. Playing a cello requires someone to learn a certain degree of being ambidextrous since you need to use both hands. A left handed person would actually have an advantage over a right handed person because to play a cello you need the most dexterity in your left hand which you already have. The right hand just controls the bow. In addition, if you are planning to ever play with others, then having the scroll on the right side would be very awkward for someone playing to the right of you.

      @@elangomattab @elangomattab Yes I have head it all before and have read almost a 43 comment, websites and threads, buy as a former violin player I am convinced that the cello ,like the violin (in my opinion) is righthanded (I. my opinion) for one example when it comes to writing changed on a music sheet in an ensemble I always have to wrest down the instrument pick up a pencil write, put down and back up the instrument, whilst a r-handed player simple pick up a pencil( bow down or not) and change their fingering with ease. for that and many other 'dis-comfortable' reasons I cease play at grade 5-6 ABRSM. Mr. elangomattab, I want to buy a cello ( tradition) and play it on my right should, hence me asking you: If you were to play your cello on your right shoulder; while you hand is in negative 1st position on the string if your hand will touch the pegs when playing , please. • @theDUBMARK
      @theDUBMARK 3 роки тому +2

      Hi Joel! Those brass pieces that you see on the G string towards the tailpiece is a Wolf-Tone Eliminator. Sometimes a couple of notes will be very "wobbly" on a cello, and that the brass piece does is it eliminates that issue by redistributing the weight on the string. Sometimes it's tough to eliminate. You can look into it more if you find the concept interesting because some people actually put a round weight on the surface of the cello (below the f-holes) to eliminate the Wolf (wobbly sound). Wolf notes tend to be in 3rd/4th position on the G string or 1st position on the D string (typically either Eb, E, F, or F# below middle C).
