Ive been doing this for a while now , i go from closed and down pw through 8 then start to loosen my grip and go through from 7 to 5 and thats as far as go with irons , but doing this is building my confidence to drop the 5 hyb for a more versatile 4i .
That said i like to play closed and down long irons into wind as i like the late lift you can get occasionally .
I really like the wrist angle input , this is the most comprehensive explanation i have yet seen on u tube .

Thanks Stuart! This video reinforces a change I made to my grip a while ago to help with my long irons. I started hitting low hooks with them rather than the tight draw that I hit with 6-P when swinging well. At first I tried just holding off the release which caused what felt like a tentative swing and a 2 way miss. When I weakened my grip a bit I found I could make a committed swing and release which really helped stabilize the ball flight. 👍🏼

I’m always amazed at how you can adjust your swing and grip and still hit decent shots. If I tried that I’d be hitting all over the face along with fat and thin shots, and shanks. That’s one of the many differences between a pro and an amateur. 🙂 I like hitting long irons, but I’m not good at it, so I stick to hybrids, which I hit much better. Another excellent video, Stuart, keep up the good work. Cheers.

Thanks buddy - it’s not as hard as you think, well, certainly not after 35 years of playing the game 😂😂

Brother you made my Thanksgiving day here in the USA … I requested this sometime back and you delivered … This was excellent … you kept it real and it really lets me know what I need to work on … fantastic use of the data with emphasis on launch angle … 🤓😝🤓😎😎

Great video as always. I am a big fan of your teaching and you are making a big difference in my game. Thanks a million. One question on this video, if I weaken my grip a little and add more loft to my 4 iron, would not that replicate my 5 iron with my usual strong grip in terms of trajectory and distance? Other than some help from the 0.5-inch longer shaft, how is the increase in dynamic loft going to help my 4-iron carry distance over my 5 iron? What am I missing?

There is an optimisation of launch, spin that my video will encourage you to create if applied well. This will up your speed because of what you see in the sky. Don't dismiss the .5inch longer club so readily too... Hope that helps.. Best wishes Stu 😊

Tried weakening the grip this morning in the 5 iron the difference was dramatic. 4 iron will probably never enter into the equation since I have the club head speed of a toddler. Went through your checklist and only needed to look at the face angle. Revisited the grip and problem alleviated. Many thanks as usual! Best wishes my friend. NWH

Great info. Would you recommend a weaker grip with long hybrids and fairway woods as well?

If you are battling with spin and ball flight, absolutely 😊

Some really useful information. I have always tended to do the former, weakening grip across long irons through to driver, but agree that if not done well can introduce some right shots. I like the idea of the stronger grip, but from a consistency point, would it be sensible to do it across all irons. That is one of my biggest issues at the moment, I always come back from the range feeling like I have had to use two different swings.

Another helpful segment- most seniors unless swing speed is 85 minimum with 4 iron and good technique- probably need hybrid- this strong grip and left wrist condition and motion is golden- Happy Thanksgiving 🦃

But aren’t you creating a 6i !?, you must be loosing distance when weakening the grip.
