    Hi Cody, Richard here. The optimal method to strop is to angle the knife until it catches the leather which is where your sharp edge is. Then using that angle, pull back using NO FORCE, or very light pressure. The instructions you gave will likely have no effect from stropping at too low of an angle, or will round over and dull the edge on lots of your subscribers' knives because of too much force. I learned this from the man himself, the living legend, Mike Stewart. You should join the Bark River Knives community, it would be fun to have you!

    This is exactly how you DONT strop a knife lol angle and pressure are very important and while not as hard as sharpening, it does take some practice to do well. Doing it this way is going to at best, convex your scandi edge and at worst, completely round off the apex of your edge.

    Stropping works to an extent. It will help freshen up the edge so long as there is no real degredation or wear and no chipping.
    Itll bring back that keen "bite" to a sharp edge perhaps 2 to 5 times.
    But after that it will require a proper sharpening.
    If youve been rough on your blade stropping just wont help much.
    But once sharpened, keep your blade alive and well with a daily stropping.
    I strop daily and repair any real wear with a ceramic rod (Spyderco Sharpmaker) between sharpenings.
    Once ive exhausted an edge it goes to the stones, either my DMT diamond plates and whet stones manually or onto one of my consistent angle sharpeners followed up by a good stropping.
    BTW, Knives Plus has an excellent strop pre-loaded with rouge that will last for years. For those that like it simple and dont want to bother with a bunch of different components and compounds etc, grab a Knives Plus strop. Its all you need.
    Add a ceramic rod sharpener for quickly repairing lightly dulled, damaged or chipped blades and for the pros, add a good clamp style consistent angle sharpener like the KME, Hapstone, Edge Pro etc and youve got it covered.

  • @RedBeardActual
    @RedBeardActual 3 місяці тому +5

    This only works on convex edges. If you do this to any other type of grind and you push that hard onto a strop it will roll your edge and do nothing but dull the knife. Light pressure if it's not a convex edge

    This is quite literally how to NOT strop a knife lol.

  • @Will_and_a_Way
    @Will_and_a_Way 3 місяці тому +3

    If you strop “really hard, using lots of pressure” you’re going to repeatedly round the apex of the edge on alternating sides and you will not end up with a good/sharp edge unless you have a great deal of experience. A proper apex needs to be established and stropping is usually for knocking off the burr after reprofiling or touching up the edge (honing). He knows a lot about certain things but not knives and especially not sharpening knives.
    By the way, don’t get that green jeweler’s rouge - it’s garbage and it’s ineffective for modern super steels. Look into polycrystalline diamond emulsions.

    Been using my Stropman Strop for years now. It’s definitely a great way to maintain your edge. The only time you want to use pressure with a strop is when you are maintaining a convex edge though and unless the knife was hand made a convex edge is pretty rare to find. If you have a convex edge you use more pressure so the leather bends around the edge and doesn’t start to flatten it. Angle is still pretty important though. You can dull an edge pretty fast if you are stopping at the wrong angle or uneven side to side. It does take a little practice and just a little knowledge of the type of edge you are working with.

If you leather is big enough put another piece on other side of board with grain side up and repeat for a finer polish

    I went to the arts and crafts store for a strip of leather for a belt for cheap. I'm a huge advocate for stropping!

    I have two of my great great grandfathers leather strops. Go in to me by my grandmother. He used them to sharpen his straight razors during his day. I have them hanging in my garage, they are a cool conversation piece.

    Rouge is great, there is also a compound named Picasso blue that I use mainly to Polish platinum, gives a great finish to harder metals

    I have a set of stones that came with a strop, polishing material, stone fixer, ect. Only catch is, the blade I want to sharpen is recurved. So I have to be careful or it'll wear down the stone prematurely. I think that jewlers stuff is the "polishing material" that came with mine lol. It's green too. Like some kind of hard wax.

    Strop is All good, knowing how to put a angle on a blade and what the different degrees is is something every knife owner should know.

    Get yourself a hone as well. If you strop and hone it'll need a whetstone once or twice a year depending on use.
    For quality blades only too

    No no no, no pressure! barely any at all. Putting pressure causes the leather to curve around the edge and ROUNDS the edge making it dull. Light strokes only!

    Started with square bales at age 8,
    Been working since.. masonry caprentry plumbing atm, fabrication.
    Few years ago, i just started using my palm as a strop. Works pretty good.
    Thay was after discovering that i can feel the curvature of the edge better with my lips than my fingers. With the same, but lighter, motion as stropping.

    And if you're into bread knives use a felt wheel on a Dremel tool. I always used red compound, dico tripoli. Now i have to learn about the different grit designations of buffing compounds.
