as a massive swiftie and kpop stan, i personally believe shes this popular because of her versatility and because she is weirdly the most ungeneric generic woman alive. generic in the way that shes a beautiful, blonde haired-blue eyed American popstar but ungeneric in the way that she is can be anything for anyone. taylor swift is generic enough that shes not too niche but niche enough that shes not too generic. taylor swift doesn't produce experimental hyperpop, but she also doesn't JUST do average, produced for tiktok pop. you can project taylor to be whoever you want her to be. shes also constantly evolving. if taylor stayed in her country, girl-next-door-era she would've never taken off. she adapted with the release of Red. in 2020, she adapted again and switched from the sweet pop album of lover to the alternative, cottagecore feel of folklore because thats what people wanted.
the other reason taylor swift is so world dominating is because she is literally a cult leader in the most unharmful way possible. she has something for everybody, she is what tons of people aspire to be, she has central enemies that swifties unanimously hate (scooter braun, kanye west, john mayer) being a swiftie offers a sort of 'exclusivity' mindset, we have special terms (era, lyric references, meme references, the number 13 lmao), and she just offers a sense of community to those who need it most.
None of that explains why you see people are literally having mental breakdowns when seeing her in concert. It's just celebrity worship syndrome running amoke
Go listen to two of Taylor Swifts best albums (Folklore- 2020 and Evermore- 2021) and you will understand why Taylor is so huge right now.

I think one of the reasons Taylor Swift’s music is so popular is because it’s easily digestible and accessible. it’s not very niche or too controversial

Probably gonna get hate for this but hear me out, Taylor Swift is definitely not more popular than michael jackson and the beatles. Although she’s more popular with younger people now, however, she isn’t as well known with all generations and cultures. To compare TS with the beatles is crazy. Before you come for me, the beatles paved the way for all musicians, they were way ahead of their time. Think of Helter Skelter, a song from 1968 that sounds way ahead of its time. I don’t know as much about michael jackson, but i do know he also revived the music industry and was a music legend, along with the beatles. I just don’t think Taylor swift has that legend status yet. I do respect that she writes her own music, way too many artist now don’t even write their own music, but I do think her music is pretty mainstream (omg i’m about to get attacked by swifties, she’s good, not my style but i do respect her, and i don’t discriminate against people that like her, you can like whatever music you want)
Is Taylor Swift as influential as The Beatles? No. Although she has defined pop music over the last decade at least, she hasn’t completely redefined the genre. Is she as famous as The Beatles were at their peak? If she isn’t, she’s certainly very close to that level of fame. She is insanely popular, to the point where, at least where I am, I could go up to a random person on the street and expect them to know who she is.

A lot of music sales rely on popularity, Yes. Michael Jackson was very, very talented but he had suits controlling his every move for for PR and musical popularity. Back then they (the suits) were able to pigeonhole artists. Now with the internet there's much more competition and for someone who has been around as long as TS with this growing generation, her PR team and the internet and the fact that she is basically Switzerland, gives her a great ground to jump off of into eternal stardom. Unfortunately, MJ 's reputation has been eternally stained by accusations and strange behavior. If he were alive, I'm sorry his music would not be popular. He would have been completely reliant on other people just to survive. His music will forever live on and is still relevant to society, because at least 1/3 of our generation knows about his music. May he RIP.
