Madam Mayor you hit the nail on the head. Patrick Brown is the reason for a lot of the issues that Ontario is having right now, including Doug Ford. There is a whole deep chasm when looking at the Conservative movement in Canada. And while no political party or movement is perfect the Manning-Day-Harper realignment is almost to weird to be taken seriously.
Thank you for your journalistic venture. This is a breath of fresh air in the modern corporate media landscape. I hope you hold true and when the allure of money is presented to obfuscate the truth you see it for what it is.
    Best Wishes.

All the bad things I did when I was young was because I had nothing better to do. The mayor is absolutely right about taking care of people to reduce crime. I wonder if the police boards knew Ford was planning to order the closure of CTS sites, then offer police sweeping powers to arrest and charge people who are "suspected" of using drugs, (but not alcohol), "publicly" while in a tent, where they reside because the shelters are full - despite being infested, a dangerous, and separating families...
The bill will criminalize homelessness to an even greater degree with cumulative charges, and appears that it can be used to criminalize outreach workers as well.
Fortunately the legislature doesn't sit again until March, so we all have some time to talk to our local representatives, who will be at home speaking with their constituents (that's what those incredibly long breaks are allegedly for) so as they're preparing to court our votes, we can tell them we hope their shoes contain one LEGO each, for all of eternity, if they vote for another bill that ignores abundant evidence to the contrary.
And please: While fulfilling your social obligations this season - don't stay silent. If it is safe for you to do so, please ruin the evening by explaining why they shouldn't be voting for the "leopards who eat people's faces party". Very nearly all of us are closer to being homeless than wealthy enough to ever matter to a politician more than lip service.
As much as I like what I'm hearing Carolyn, I heard the copaganda. You're not the first politician who's let me down on this one.
You saw how the institution works. You had to leave in order to act ethically. They're hiding data and hoping you won't ask the right questions. Institutions that do that, also do that to their lowest ranking members. They teach them not to question. So even if they are kind, and truly equity delivering individuals... it's hard to stay that way in that culture.
Same as there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. You do your best, and you're still doing harm.
We have to be real about that.

I'm not from Mayor Parrish's community, but I don't think that matters. What does matter is her recounting of her experience at the local police board and the board terms of reference regarding meetings. Nothing about her observations should surprise us about people holding public office these days, whether it be in a post office, township or houses of parliament.
A long time ago, not in this country that I am aware of, there was a time when individuals that were accepted for public service positions were appraised on their obligation to respect The Nolan Principles. What we see today is no obligations, no respect and no ACCOUNTABILITY.

I live in Alberta where police fly around in helicopters 24/7. They use them for surveillance, not for assisting in high speed chases, or emergency situations. Considering that the average police department in Canada has five helicopters; it costs over $5000 an hour to have them in the air, each (including personnel, fuel, maintenance and upkeep. That’s approximately $840,000 a year per chopper. Considering the rate of unsolved and violent crime going unsolved or even being investigated, spending close to five million a year to fly around doing nothing but surveillance is ridiculous! If they want more money, tell them to stop using the police for spying on law abiding citizens, and start using the money to put boots on the ground and do their jobs!!!

I don't understand: can't whichever ministry oversees ON police services order an audit or review of the structure of their budgeting and other accounting records (that 'line' format part), a review of the transparency of several of their procedures (like secrecy etc), a review of the composition of the board (not just Police)? They're a public service after all. They are supposed to work for us, not hide behind a heavy veil of secrecy and incomprehensible fuzzy records. I automatically think of the Auditor General, but this is provincial and I don't know the processes available to make this board more accountable, its financial demands more transparent, and maybe also conclude that some of this money would be better spent on the services Mayor Parrish suggested. Especially if experience has shown they will not be able to actually train 300 officers in any case, they should only get money for those they do train, and then maybe older people like me will still be able to pay all our taxes. Great interview, thanks!

In my opinion, the RCMP's contract policing model works better than a city's municipal police force model. With the contracted RCMP, they work directly for the city and if the city doesn't like how they do things they can choose not to renew the contract (which holds them accountable to the city). With a municipal service, they are their own entity. Look at Surrey Police Service, DUI Doug McCallum's argument was he wanted the city of Surrey to have control over their own police service. When Mayor Locke got into office and tried to disband the service, the chief of SPS said the city doesn't have the authority to make those decisions.

I think you really need to consider the quality of existing policing too do they need more officers because only one in four of them currently does their job properly as is? Be assertive and fire the bad ones defund them individually. Vancouver has Canadas highest paid cops for example but they can murder someone for a minor offence like Myles Gray and keep their jobs and don't even budget for body cameras either but tax payers should hire more evil unaccountable thugs but them new cars etc? Surrey too has a hell of a time with their RCMP the provincial safety minister says the city needs to switch to municipal police instead they are so terrible. Then yes they want to criminalize poverty next some nice easy targets elderly and disabled on fixed incomes while they turn a blind eye to violent repeat offenders car thieves etc?

I would beware of Conservatives that want to defund the CBC too for investigating cops that don't want to investigate themselves.

One of our Social Issues is a lack of accountability, and I see it at every single level of society. Policing needs to be stepped up. Big time.

Sounds like the literal lack of accountability is within the police department.

@@leannefranson1198 Not true. Our police force is actually quit progressive, and the members are held accountable. Shame on you for falling for the biased Corporate media. The biggest problem is irresponsible parents, especially mothers.
