England went to Rome top of the European Group 2 final game, needing just one point to achieve automatic qualification for the 1998 World Cup. They did what they needed to do and battled out a 0-0 draw with Paul Ince suffering a bad head injury.

I was at this game when I was 13. I'm an Italian Canadian and was visiting Italy. The game was absolutely terrifying as a foreign spectator. The crowd was rioting the entire time. The english and italian supporters were sectioned off from one another, and I was sitting in neutral section. The italians and english were literally ripping their seats off and throwing them over the glass to the opposing sections. The riot police went in a few times and beat the shit out of people with batons. Most people werent even paying attention to the game. Looking back, it's absolutely insane the level of talent in this game, on both sides. I wish I was more aware at the time to realize it. I remember just being upset that Baggio wasn't there and didnt know who half the other players were lol.
Gazza was excellent in this game but only 5 months later his international career was finished forever.

A great League and a lot of cups win like Club nobody can say contrary but but too many times your national football team has embarrassing matches! 4 exaple against Icelands!

@@danielnuttman6511 1966 World Cup was fixed. Before and after that, in fact, England never existed at high level. From the last 30 years then, it's going even worse, if possible.
There is cricket, badminton, perhaps bocce but please guys, leave football alone.

I had to check wikipedia to remind myself what actually happened to Italy at WC98. Had completely forgotten: beat Norway, then 0-0 against France, out on penalties. They're not talked about at all in that tournament. The matches everyone remembers are:
England vs Argentina
Argentina vs Holland
Croatia vs Germany
Holland vs Brazil
Croatia vs France
Brazil vs France
It was a fun world cup, but Italy were completely anonymous at it.

Italy was anonymous at W.C.98 'cause we won an anonynous group (Chile, Austria, Cameroon), after the group stage: 1-0 against Norway and eliminated by France in quarter finals on penalties...despite Baggio, Del Piero, Vieri, Inzaghi, Maldini, Cannavaro that wasn't a memorable tournament for us but still we left as unbeaten and also the only team which the french world champions couldn't defeat; Penalty shoot-out are cruel

They said Italy would get thrashed by Germany. I am half italian half English, now the English have been treating Italy like trash lately but what they didnt realise is that Italy came top. Now we have to pray Italy will beat Spain on Sunday.... they deserve it. :/

the best 0-0 match of all time...this england team full with legend and emerging talent of beckham, scholes, owen...deserved at least semi final place at france 98...but somehow lost to romania in group stage and must meet red hot argentina in 2nd round...
They lost ro Romania because Romania had a great team back then.

Hey well guess what Einstein that's exactly what I did. The reason for the comment is to suggest to a usually quite good FATV to use less annoying music in the future or not to bother at all - is there really any need when you've already got commentary? Even when you tunr it down, you can still hera the music! :@
I agree entirely, just makes me press mute button on my keyboard. I WANT to hear the commentary and crowd noise, why do people feel the need to cover up sporting content with music? Boxing, football-the viewers enjoy watching these sports and the sound is part of it. If there isn't any sound for whatever reason, you are better off leaving it silent.

It is not dived. English is always cheated overrated and garbage Tony Adam caught Delpiero leg and it was a penalty. It will definitely penalty if Owen or the English strikers felt like del Piero did. Remember Steven Geread did in UCL final 2005. England always cheat and lies.
