    Thanks for showing us how beautiful the city is. Most folks in the U.S. only hear the bad things of Mexico. If you watch the news in the U.S., the only thing that makes the news is bad news. The city of San Miguel de Allende is a real show stopper!

    SMA is breathtakingly expensive compared to other places in Mexico (something that's been difficult for locals priced out of their own neighborhoods) but it's incredibly beautiful. I recommend it to anyone visiting Mexico. That said, make sure you get to Guanajuato! We lived there for two years and I fell in love with its callejones and tunnels. Also make sure to put Xilitla and the Jardín Surrealista on your list... there's SO much to do/see in Mexico!

      I was just there last week and totally agree. $11 for a margarita? I passed one restaurant with a menu and no prices listed. Yes, it's beautiful, but sorry, if I want that, I'll go to Manhattan or L.A.

      @jefffarris1288 too Many Mexican Americans, gringos and Canadians. It is becoming Americanized and the business owners are capitalizing from it. The only ones hurting is the locals. Even so, they can work at a restaurant and bank.

    After visiting twice and then spending months at a time there, I have learned that the best part of living in San Miguel is the social, cultural, and intellectual life here. I have lived and traveled all over the world and have never found anything like it. Almost every day and evening there is something intellectually stimulating, creative, or just plain fun to do with truly amazing humans, including lectures, art exhibits, plays, and concerts. And we walk almost everywhere! After first living here for only five weeks, I had thirty-four people at my birthday party whom I adore and continue to see regularly. They are kind, intelligent, loving, adventuresome, open-minded, witty, and spiritually inclined humans who care deeply about making the world a better place. Whether they are young or old, they are still so open-hearted, intentional, active, accomplished, smart, and incredibly alive! BUT, there are also drawbacks to living here, including questionable air quality on many days, a water shortage that could become dire (plus the need to purify it to safely drink it regularly), dry but HOT weather in May and the first part of June, and, although SMA seems to always be a safe little magical bubble, there are nearby towns that we are cautioned not to visit, especially at night. Hopefully SMA stays as safe as it has always been since we first visited 26 years ago, but there’s always a risk that it will not. There are pros and cons to every city, and those are the cons that few people discuss. Those cons are worth the risk to us because we are so happy here, but a balanced assessment might help others decide whether to move here.

    I signed a years lease as a retired nurse and I am living here since October 2023. It is not cheap. Food at the large grocery stores are the same as home in Chicago. Rent is high here as compared to other cities in Mexico. Dinners out equal US. What is great here is the weather. There's not a bad day and it's not humid. Nights are cool and wool blankets feel great. I know there is crime all around SMA, but it feels safe here to walk around alone (with my Frenchie). I love that I can take my dog almost everywhere....even the double decker modern buses allow me to buy a seat for my dog! I am not crazy about living amongst so many gringos in SMA. I'm considering now moving to Guanajuato City! I love it there and I love your video about it!

    I've lived in SMA for three years and probably will be here for the duration. My favorite cities to live came down to Guanajuato and SMA. Guanajuato is equally lovely with fewer gringos, but SMA has a great public library-the second largest collection of English language books in Mexico.

    We were just in SMA in the first week of January. And also spent time in Guanajuato City. Really loved both cities. GC is certainly less expensive and I love the university vibe. My favorite city in the whole world is Cuenca, Ecuador... and SMA does have 80-85 of that sort of vibe. I especially love the art galleries and the food. And going to the main square after dark. All those square trees with hanging and blinking lights, the cathedral lit from top to bottom like an alien pink spacecraft, the main streets all lit up from the hanging star lights... really is a beautiful place.
    I mainly came by though to compliment you guys on your camera work. I watch a lot of UA-cam travel videos. The two of you really, really deliver with high resolution and excellent color on all your videos. No blurry pans or garbled audio... it feels like you are right there. And obviously the drone work is great as well but I'm a total newbie at that... but as a photography guy going back to the B&W film days... I appreciate the quality of your work. You make it look so easy but I'm sure it takes hours of equipment preparation and then post on a computer to pull it all together. Really excellent work.

      Wow thank you SO MUCH for those compliments. We put a lot of time and effort into creating high quality footage but often wonder if anyone even notices/cares with so much IPhone footage out there these days. But we really do love the art of creating work we’re proud of 😊 Glad you appreciate it. Also you should try out drone work… it’s fun and addicting 😉

      I would love to know more about Cuenca Ecuador I am considering a housesit their Christmas time and from what I see Christmas New Year’s is supposed to be magical there with Folklorico dance in the streets. I’d love to know more because I’m choosing between Puerto Morelis Christmas time housesit, or Cuenca

    • @gregorygreenwood882
      @gregorygreenwood882 10 місяців тому

      There are a LOT of Cuenca UA-cam videos. Including some from Eric and Sarah. I love SMA and GC... but I really believe in our case that I love them the most for long vacations. Cuenca IMO is better for an actual residence for expats. (I haven't been there at Christmas so I can't help you there.) The Cuenca cost of living is lower across the board. The medical care is a tie. The natural environment is a clear win for Cuenca... in the city itself and an easy, easy win ouside the city. The fact that EC uses the US Dollar is a plus. I personally have no problems with the altitude but some people do... to me it is a plus because it helps keep the weather perfect and eliminates practically all insect problems! There are a LOT of expats from around the world in Cuenca... the various groups that get together and help each other out and socialize are part of the attraction to me. And while the restaurant scene in SMA is wonderful... IMO again... it is equally good in Cuenca... and your bill will be substantially lower.
      It does take longer to get down there from the US. Not going to drive down from Texas like you can do to SMA. You have to do something like Miami to Quito to Cuenca. But... maybe that is a good thing? I can't imagine how much more "touristy" Cuenca could be if it was as close to the US as SMA! There is somewhere around 12-12k full time expats there now... and the planes are constantly landing and taking off every day... the Centro is always busy. @@kroyal4296

    SMA is absolutely beautiful, thanks for sharing your trip. I’m from guanajuato and SMA is one of my favorite spots. Although it has been changing a lot. Prices 3-4 blocks from la parroquia have skyrocketed. Employees are no longer friendly to nationals all they want is tourists money. The most beautiful places are reserved for the Americans and foreigners. Friday sat sun super crowded not kidding. The city is owned by the west. I’m skipping SMA next time. Hotels food places are super expensive. In my opinion even more expensive than Cancun I prefer to pay to be at the beach than in this town any day.

So I'd avoid there, for now, or without a guide. But Morelia ia safe. Capital. Historic. Alot of expats quietly finding it. I think it would make fabulous video, real educational. If you go, its very economical, greal food. Tarascan indians, indigenous, not taken over by aztecs.
