I beat it once. It took me 5 long agonizing months of playing it everyday and on occasion 2 times a day which I documented in my battletoads updates that I put out monthly a few years back
Yeah, 5 months of playing it every day sounds about right. Every few years or so I play it for a couple days and am usually able to get a little bit farther. I think stage 7 or 8 is where I got to last.
I beat the Turbo Tunnel level!!! I beat it!! Finally!!🎉 That was one of the most triumphant yes! screams I ever gave for beating a level. It almost felt like beating a tough video game, that is tough but a lot less tough than Battletoads😅 Level 4 was really fun. I think I got like halfway and that was it. Now I have a new challenge to overcome.😮
It's my favorite NES title followed by Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. I don't think it's likely THE hardest but there's a good reason why it's up there. The Turbo Tunnels isn't the only difficult section either.
I loved Castlevania 3 for a bit, but then I got to a level that just wouldn't end. It had the anxiety song playing (awesome song) and multiple bosses to beat. As well as, of course, the one with the dragon skeleton that was too long. You would think I would have more tolerance, given that I love battletoads, but the dragon level and dracula boss fight, it's rough.
Yet I've never finished Castlevania series, I've tried its not easy the tough hard aspects draws me to it but I'm kinda not in the mood of getting my butt whupped right now😂
@@b01tact10n yeah, that's understandable, es when you get older. You just don't have that much free time anymore and you don't want to play hard games because if you play it for only like 10 or 20 minutes you might leave with a bitter feeling.
Battletoads is a game I'd like to beat one day, but I just don't have the time to tackle this now. I never owned it as a kid, and I don't own it now. UCanBeatVideoGames put a video out on it, and it has some great pointers, so maybe I will try it and see where I get with it. Games I thought were hard? NES Ghosts n Goblins. That game was brutal... I don't even think I have a desire to beat this one. There is hard, and then there is... we REALLY want to break your spirits, and not in a way that keeps you coming back for more.
Most of kids I knew back then never actually passed the turbo tunnel level, and they would always react with shock when I told them that after hundreds of tries, I would often go through it on my very first try (and ramping up lives at it), only to get pummeled by the much tougher stages later in the game. As a kid, the rat race was my final straw, and I gave up on Battletoads after actually smashing my control against the wall in a moment of pure frustration/rage (didn't have the cartridge, and my mom's patience to rent it was growing thinner). I only revisited the game to finally beat like 15 years later hahaha.
It's so funny, man. I've always loved this game and I've never beat the turbo tunnel. I played it recently and had the same old result and my love for this game is still unchanged.
The hardest ever? Short answer, no. Everything can seem hard a first but practice practice practice and you will succeed. The key is to rack up as many 1ups as you can early on in the game. A hard game is not a bad thing either. Other games like Ninja Gaiden and Ghost n' Goblins are memorable because of their difficulty.
I own this game nowadays, but I never did as a kid. I rented it a bunch of times. Despite its difficulty, I really enjoyed it. The turbo tunnel was never that difficult for me. The ice stage is usually where I died. I made it to the 5th level a couple of times.
Oh battletoads. God I love these games. I didn't play a ton of NES growing up as everyone seemed to have a SNES so I played a TONNNN of Super Battle toads. I still played this one quite a bit but I was a kid so of course have never beat it. I played the one on rare replay and beat it though
Probably took me a month to beat. It's a lot about memorization. Of the later levels I found Clinger Winger to be the easiest. Apparently this level is almost impossible if you're not playing on a CRT television.
I’m actually able to beat CW each time I play it on my non crt tv Panasonic from like 2006. I’ve kept it to play old systems on and it plays Battletoads beautifully. I think I have a video of beating on my channel uploaded.
nice man a battletoads video lol. I like how u said ppl that hate a game cause its to hard, i could for sure argue that with a game being to easy so its boring. Doing the no death run of battletoads will forever put this game in a special place for me. There are games that are hard because of bad controls or just made cheaply then there is battletoads and memorization. This game has a great balance of fun/difficulty. Its so rewarding to beat a stage for the first time
Ah I did that once too - the no death run. No other Battletoads game was as good for me as the original! I bet we would have had a blast working on it co-op. I had a friend who could make it up to the surfing level with me but no further.
I have never heard of this game and I could make the excuse that I was 5 when I played my dads nes and was obsessed with Mario, but that aside I want to play this game really bad now.
I loved NES Battletoads up until the turbo tunnel. The already brutal difficulty combined with only 3 continues was enough for me. As a kid I loved hard games but in the case of Battletoads it just took all the fun away.
I had alot of fun playing BATTLETOADS! I still play it to this day along with the Ninja Gaiden trilogy, but i couldn't get into Castlevania for some reason but... i make a run at them pretty soon😁👍👍
This game was hard for me because I was 3 or 4 when I first played it. Went back to it a couple of years ago and I just don’t want to dedicate the time to “get good” lol
Is the all stars version the same as the rerelease for the gba? Because that was my first run in the mario. Someone brought there gba to school and we all would huddle around for literal weeks attempting to beat it.
In the Turbo Tunnel dodging the walls and traps isn’t too bad for me, nor hitting the ramps; where I get messed up is that part when you see that exclamation point and you’re supposed to jump from one platform to the other. It looks like it shouldn’t even be hard but I always go flying off!! I’m open to advice.
Playing this on 2 player mode and beating each other up (mostly accidentally) was so satisfying. Even if it was downright near impossible to pass through the turbo tunnel in 2-player mode (required too much synchronization and was too damn distracting).
As much as I like Battletoads NES, it's not my favorite in the series because despite what the name implies you do way more platforming than battling. For my money I prefer Battletoads GB, Battletoads/Double Dragon SNES, and my #1 Battletoads Arcade.

Wow. It is so weird listening to old Retrobird videos. Retrobird's delivery feels off and scripted. In his current videos, he sounds so natural, but here it's like he's just a LITTLE slower than usual, and it's just enough to COMPLETELY break the illusion. It becomes blatantly obvious that he's reading from a script. It's feels like looking at an optical illusion from a slightly different angle and the illusion breaks apart. It's like a magic trick is being exposed. I'm not complaining. On the contrary, it's cool to see the evolution and improvement of content creators.
Yeah, it was definitely a process of just getting comfortable speaking into a mic. I always get a kick out of people's reactions to how slow I used to speak. I can't remember the last time I listened to one, but they startle me as well :)
Not even close to “the hardest of all time” tbh. Try the Ikari warriors with no abba code, the touhou series, the original rogue, or the I wanna kill the kamilia series. This games difficulty is overhyped honestly.
@@HerbivorousMuse lol, but excluding rogue, I wanna kill the kamilia 3 CLEARS this game 50 fold in difficulty. I was just saying that I don’t think this game is as hard as people say it is with a little practice.
This game is incredibly overrated. It isn't entirely a bad game, but you can tell how unconfident Rare was with releasing this. The story goes that Rare was upset that people were renting their games instead of buying them. I have no issue with games being difficult, but as mentioned, difficult*is* fun, but there's no continues, no password system and no save feature. Every true difficult game has something like that such as Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man, Ghosts N Goblins, Batman, etc. On top of that, the controls are stiff. Sometimes you need to jump high over an obstacle. Doesn't work. Maybe you need to dash fast to avoid the big metal wheel thing. Doesn't work. Perhaps youre trying to use a combo to beat at enemy. Doesn't work. Oh, and sometimes using a combo can be problematic as the animation for the boot or punch can slow down your attack, thus opening you up to be attacked. The big problem becomes that the game expects precision from a lot of the gameplay itself, so you're no longer having fun, you're just trying to gain muscle memory so you don't have to start over. That's not fun. On top of that, it's impossible to actually memorize this game as it can be random with where enemies spawn such as the fish, and those robots that shoot electricity can drain your lifebar due to a glitch, along with all the other cheap deaths such as getting stepped on. Any game that requires you to take leaps of faith such as in the snake level, navigate rooms of spikes with surgical precision, or memorize the layout of obstacles that will 1 hit KO you the millisecond they appear onscreen....thats bad game decision. It's too bad too, since Rare otherwise mostly makes good games, but this one rightly gets every bit of criticism it deserves.
I can’t even emphasize on how fun this game can be with it’s variety. I’ve beaten it 6 times, 3 times with warps and 3 times warpless. Great review!
