  • 2007 Mazda 3 transmission fluid and filter change. Are you having issues with hard shifting problems with your 2007 Mazda 3? My Mazda started jerking really hard when driving in speeds of 30-50 mph. The only indicator light that would come up was the AT light. I hooked up an OBD reader and there were no codes shown.
Since I bought the vehicle in 2007, I have never changed out the filter. I did change out the transmission fluid few years back. I figured it was time to change out the filter....maybe that was causing the hard shifting.
After filling up the car with new transmission fluid, I took it out for a spin. Question of the day - Do you think the transmission filter and fluid change fixed the hard shifting?

I just did a transmission pan, filter, and fluid change on my Mazda 3. Tip - there is a reverse plug on the pan you can remove to drain the fluid before removing the pan, less mess.
I used Valvoline MaxLife ATF, around 5 quarts.

That loose part that plugs (loosely) into your filter is a heat sensor.

top tip: use silicone grease on a rubber gasket. that way it stays put and you can have your holes line up

Not an expert here , have read that automatic transmissions that have not had the fluid changed for a long time and likely worn internal parts get used to a certain viscosity and changing it too much in one direction can lead to shifting problems or even the end of a transmission prematurely. Some guys only drain about 2 quarts through the drain plug and then replace that much to the full level - less of a shock to the internals.
One old mechanic said replace the tranny fluid and filter every 2nd or 3rd oil change and not stomping on the accelerator will make the tranny last longer .

For those that want to use a synthetic ATF instead of Mazda MV :
    Compared to Mazda MV :
Motul Multi ATF is just a little too thick,
Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF and Eneos Eco ATF are both just a little too thin.
(Mobil 1 is also a little too expensive)
But they are very very close .. so in fact they all work!
I mix 2 liters motul with 1 litre of Eneos, so as to get closer to the original viscosity. (premix them to prevent foaming)
Thick ATF is better for smoother shifting.
Thin ATF is better for performance
These three have almost the same viscosity when cold.
Motul retains a little more viscosity when hot. The other two can not ..
MV curve remains in the middle..
