she also becomes much more open towards others later on too. at first she is the model, stoic leader who, out of all the gems steven feels he knows the least well, and becomes much more open towards steven, and arguably to the others too. pearl and amethyst both overestimate her fortitude at times, or are even afraid of disappointing her, when really they are all pretty much on equal ground. she makes as many mistakes as any of the major cast do, and like you said even ruby and sapphire get development that effects and strengthens their own relationship and thus garnet's existance too. her arc is just more subtle because she doesn't have major, apparent changes likes the other crystal gems.

@@lionclan4575 Also all the gems become much more open to interacting with and making friends with humans. Pearl is the most obvious, who goes from wanting to bring the fence back to training Connie and getting a group of human friends in Future but all the Gems including Garnet are seen interacting with human voluntarily at points toward the end of the show. E.g. Obviously they didn't have to have the townie's at their wedding, and there's the concept of the wedding in the first place and engaging more with human culture in a meaningful way for them.

Okay, I'm not a music guy. In fact, I can't carry a tune even if it was in a bucket. But, like, I like "What's The Use of Feeling Blue" and it's almost 4 AM, so I'm gonna say my piece. I think the song being clunky and uneven is a bit of the point. Cause Yellow Diamond isn't a singer - shes a soldier, a general. She's trying to comfort Blue over Pink's supposed "death". But her idea of dealing with it is to lash out, be angry, and try to forcefully move past it. It's a very soft way of telling someone to shut up and get over it, even though Yellow herself isn't over it and it's reflected in the discorded singing of the Pearls and the music that follows after. And, of course, how the song ends with Yellow remembering her own pain and hitting the wall.
An analysis by me, someone who is tone deaf. Now take my like and have a good night. Or morning. Afternoon? IDK.

@@pearlyp9898yes! I think it’s exactly why the song starts with the pearls singing a dissonant tune. It’s uncomfortable and a bit jarring, but that’s because Yellow herself is uncomfortable and her true feelings are dissonant with the persona she puts on. She dedicates herself to being a leader and a diamond, believing that her own feelings are distractions, but that’s due to the pressure she puts on herself to live up to high expectations and the way she doesn’t want to think about her own grief and pain. She doesn’t want to have these feelings at all, she wants to be a perfect robotic leader, never looking back, in stark contrast to blue who wallows in her misery and grief and refuses to move on.

As Rebecca Sugar used to say all the time when it was airing “ There are no filler episodes of Steven universe.” The show isn’t called “ the fight of the Crystal gems” it’s called “ Steven universe”. And Steven universe isn’t just a gem. He’s half human. So I don’t know why people for some reason expect the show to ignore his human half. Which goes against the message of the show regarding Steven. The whole point is that he’s not just human and not just gem. He is both. So the show is going to show both sides of his life. So you can’t call them filler. They’re all important.

Same, Cat Fingers is probably my least favorite episode in the entire show. Not only is it weird and kind of gross, but it also has absolutely zero payoff later down the line (Steven never uses his shapeshifting to turn into things other than older/younger versions of himself, which is showcased much better in Too Many Birthdays) and the ending outright betrays Rebecca Sugar's vision for the show in that she "never wanted it to feel mean or ironic", yet the ending has Garnet scold Pearl for getting concerned about the cat fingers saying they should all trust more in Steven when it was GREG who saved the day. This episode is nothing but an off-putting waste of time.

    • @caseydia3957
      @caseydia3957 3 місяці тому +20

@@rainpooper7088 They all grow to respect Greg more as the show goes on. It's clear from context clues at the start of the show that Greg was sort of a deadbeat before Steven started growing up a little. They didn't see him as useful for anything because he hadn't been since Rose left. I don't remember if they mention it, but the guy was almost definitely depressed, and they were angry at and not willing to acknowledge him because someone so powerless caused their leader and friend to disappear forever. Regardless, the payoff of that episode is learning that Steven doesn't shapeshift the way the rest of them do. He can alter himself but if he tries to manifest something, it'll appear as its own creature. This is because of his pink diamond powers, similar to growing sentient watermelons or his healing abilities. Amethyst can mimic other creatures, Steven can create them because he's a diamond and his powers work differently. This is one of the first hints we get that Steven isn't like the other gems so I'd say there's some payoff later down the line.

I love that you singled out "It's Over" as being just about the best song in the show, because it's actually just so good. Deedee Magno Hall actually sang it way harder than was expected, to the point that they actually revised the scene to match the emotion she was putting into the song. If you look at the storyboards, Pearl looks a lot more reserved than she did in the final scene, and the fact that they had to change it to that degree just shows that it is one of, possibly THE best song in the show (Outside of one or two bangers in the movie in my opinion, but I mean if we're just talking the main series)

"What's the Use in Feeling Blue" is jilted and unsteady, it rocks around and stumbles over the beat. I... absolutely adore it. It is meant to show that Yellow Diamond is putting on this absolutely unbreakable facade but she's falling apart behind it. It is a very difficult song to sing, which I believe was to show off Patti LuPone's ability. Everything you said is absolutely true, but to me it all comes together to make this beautiful song about denying the pain of losing a family member.

To be honest, I detest how the term "Filler" has gone from "Episodes of an anime that are thrown together and not based on the source material because the show is catching up too fast" to just mean "any episode of any show that isn't advancing the main story or cast." Some folks are in too much of a hurry to get through a show, and it weirds me out because some of the "Filler" is great. Hell, Tiger Millionaire and Beach Party are some of my favorite episodes.

in anime there are non filler episodes that focus on slice of life and characters... but with steven universe most slice of life and character focused episodes end on... returns to the status quo which is more like a filler episode than a character episode.
AND on top of that they rush past any important plot episodes (the last episode is literally "changing hitlers mind"... it took them like 20 episodes for peridot but white is just... instant?!?)

Two things you said during this video that I really wish more people online could take to heart
    1. It’s okay to not like things because you don’t like them. You don’t need to make up reasons. Just let people enjoy what they like and know that you can just…not like something. Also people who don’t like things because they just don’t are valid.
    2. Everything has problems, and it’s perfectly fine for people to just not care if they’re inconsequential. This doesn’t excuse, like, not caring if your favorite music artist is guilty of murder and got out after a year because they’re famous. It’s like stuff like Foafy said, characters being off model, pacing dragging, jokes not landing, and all that stuff.
TL;DR People can like and dislike what they please, neither needs justification. Art is subjective.

I watched season 1 as it aired when I was 8, and I kept up with it all the way to the end. We matured together. I think I was the exact target audience for this show. As the show (and my life) progressed, I was not only uncovering Gem Mysteries with Steven, but uncovering things about the real world as well. Steven and I were discovering how to be capable, intelligent, and empathetic people.
Some critics only view the show through its fantasy/sci-fi side. Seeing it this way, it's easy to be annoyed with the "filler" Beach City episodes that seemingly add nothing to the lore. But I feel like for the target audience, the Beach City filler was just as, if not more, important. I was just as excited to see Steven go to the Big Donut as I was to see him battle the Diamonds. And as for the pacing issues, those were NOT a problem for me, or anyone I knew, at the time of airing. It is a little distracting if I binge the show now though haha
Overall, I think the show totally holds up. The story is beautiful, the world is creative, and the representation is beneficial for young people to see. It will probably be enjoyed on streaming services for years to come by children and adults alike. But, for me, so much of the show is about the experience I had growing up with Steven. That feeling can never be replicated.

From what I know the bulk of the shows problems were due to the horrific level of infighting amongst staff behind the scenes. The show was not managed well and different people wanted different things. You had one writer who wanted Peridot to be with Lapis, one who wanted Peridot to be ace, and one who didn't care about any of that and wanted to do a redemption arc, and Rebecca just shrugging and not really reigning it in. The art issues are a sympton of this disfunction, they aren't an issue on their own, but
This also caused a lot of the pacing issues(though CN bares some blame there by inventing Steven Bombs), and the issues with the diamonds. Rebecca wanted them to mostly be used as a metaphor for dysfunctional families.
Some writers trying to stick to that leaned them in-universe to be more akin to Greek or Roman goddesses, you can't really stop them, but they can learn and not pull Zeus-tier shenanigans on the regular(looking at you too Pink). But you also had writers(especially in S2 or 3) going more for the Space Dictatorship vibe(allegedly both the way Yellow was written in Message Received and the villainous shot of the Diamond in the full version of the S2 intro were both hated by Rebecca). Plus there was the chronic issue of the S1 era writers who wanted to do episodic character and townie episodes putting heads with the newer writers who wanted to focus on the ongoing story.
SU was an objectively badly run show.

He didn’t address one of the biggest and actual criticism of the show which is the only thing people still for now-days
The redemption and message of peace
People will occasionally complain about the messy schedule, the amount of focus given to Tertiary characters and the constant whiplash (also the awful comedy)
But things like how Bismuth is 100% dismissed on getting rid of the diamonds when the diamonds have a body count on the millions, or how Lapis was the abusive one in the malachite relationship (lapis herself said she liked hurting Jasper) and how UNSATISFACTORY was to see the diamonds just cry and never face the consequences of making things like the cluster or destroying all organic life from hundreds of planets (yes I know it was done because they were too powerful to be dethroned but that doesn’t mean it isn’t unsatisfactory)
I can see what you were trying to do but when saying the reason the show is so hated for “bad faith criticism” and “hate towards fandom” while dismissing this one glaring issue people still mention to this day (seriously, every time steven is mentioned is to hype up a show which punishes their villains)

My history with Steven Universe is really complicated. When I saw commercials for it as a kid I honestly thought it looked really stupid. In my defense this was the same year Cartoon Network premiered Teen Titans Go and Uncle Grandpa so I thought it was gonna be something like that. So I ignored it for a long time until a few years later when I started becoming active online and I heard people praising the show left and right. So naturally that peaked my curiosity, but then of course I also started hearing a lot of backlash as well and that left me a bit confused. So I decided I'd finally give it a chance and watched the entire thing on Max a couple years ago. And now it's one of my favorite cartoons of all time, I loved it.

I do still love the show regardless, as it is a phenomenal work of art in so many ways. • @zackar8072
      @zackar8072 2 місяці тому

I see a lot of people complain about that, and while i totally get it, the two main reasons why it feels like its dismissing fascism is because 1, CN cancelling the show (thus pretty much destroying the Diamonds realistically realizing that what they're doing is wrong) and 2, which i think is the most important part when talking about this: diamonds weren't meant (or at least primarily) to represent fascism. Rebecca Sugar has gone on record to say that the empire was meant to represent a dysfunctional family, and she HATED how some shots in the show (who were put there by animators) made them look more like space dictators.
They're meant to represent a dysfunctional family and how trauma and the cycle of violence affect everybody in it- how some families force their peers to be stuck in roles and are faced with harsh expectations, etc. This especially becomes apparent when you look at Pink diamond's abuse by the diamonds- with Pink Diamond at first trying very hard to be like them and continue the abuse they've done to her (like with Pink Pearl), until she realizes that what they're doing (and what SHE is doing) is wrong and that things need to change.
White diamond is also a pretty obvious case of this, what with her whole ''everybody needs to be perfect like me and i cannot fathom myself having a flaw, as such, i will shove all the expectations i put on myself on others and force them to hid their flaws/reject them if they have flaws- everybody should be perfect, and I'm perfect, so everybody should be like me' which is something that can happen in abusive families who put too much expectations on their peers.
That's also why Steven realizing that what Blue diamond is doing to him (making him cry) isn't okay is pretty important, because Steven has grown into a family who, while they have MANY problems, weren't abusive, and weren't forcefully making him cry to punish him- He KNOWS what a healthy family (with flaws) is like, and it's NOT the diamonds.
Now I'm not going to say whether or not the show dealt with this theme very well, or that it even fits perfectly into it, that's really an opinion that people need to form by themselves, but i think it's still important to acknowledge that the Diamonds (and their relationship to each other and homeworld) weren't made with the (at least sole) purpose to represent fascism when talking about if the show dealt with the space dictatorship problem very well or not.
Sorry if the English is bad or if this doesn't make much sense, just needed to put this out here.

    • @danieljacobpearson
      @danieljacobpearson 2 місяці тому

@@zackar8072 I think you've made a very sharp and accurate analysis of the abusive relationships in SU. Kudos!
But forget the concept of fascism as applied to the diamonds for a moment. There's no doubt that the Gem society enforced by the diamonds was imperialist and colonialist, and that the creators of the show intended that. I think one of the greatest points of genius in SU is the fact that empire is a metaphor for abusive family and *simultaneously* that abusive family is a metaphor for empire. The comparison of one to the other can give us extremely valuable insights into both types of dynamics. Both are dynamics in which power is imbalanced and unchecked.

I think the reason most of the people who can't stand Steven Universe is that Rose Quartz plot twist and the ending (the White Diamond redemption)
I was iffy about those two, but its a shame how bad critisism those aspects receive - there's clearly lot of thought and build up into the reveal of Rose Quartz and if you ignore White Diamonds getting redeemed too easily, the ending of original show is awesome (we see some crazy fusions and Steven split, which was heavily forshadowed).
I was trying to figure out, why most of the people hate it so much.
The best asnwer i could come up with is that... fans felt betrayed.
People been feeling very emotional about the show. In their eyes the Rose plot twist was a huge character assassination for most of the cast, because it completely recontextualize... everything and perhaps even ruins some of the characters development (like Garnet). It's also difficult to understand Pink diamond motivation. She looks extremely selfish on the surface, thats why the reveal might feel dumb, when it actually has so much layers.
Similarly with White Diamond, she was build up to such an opressing, inhumane force that people really had high expectation (aspecially since finally showed her to be even more threatening than we thought), so defeating her so easily seems very unrealistic - the fact is though, you can't really have a different ending. Shatering her was not an option.
There's also other thing why people hate the ending i think - it's the heaviness of the themes around the White Diamond.
I think for many people White Diamond is almost an allegory for conservative parent who wants to control everything in their family life. Steven facing her, it's almost like theallegory of someone getting out of closet.
So for people relating to this so heavily, for the conflict to be resolved so easily with some magic emotion powers, is just a betreyal. You can't use the cheap way like that when dealing with your parents.
But ironically thats exactly the reason, why they couldnt imprison or kill her!
Honestly, I think Rebbecca and her stuff simply wrote themselves into a corner. There is No good way of resolving this conflict easily in a way it would both feel realistic way of defeating a space tyrant AND make amends with her as Steven's family. This two things shouldn't be tangled together.
The only way to do it realistically is to have a long arc of redemption just like Peridot had, with lot of struggle and even rebounds. But again, we dont have time for it.
I think the way i would wrote it... I would switch the things a little. I would make White Diamond visit the Earth BEFORE her change of mind and not after.
She clearly lives in a bubble and believes she knows best and makes everyone the happiest they can be. L:et her see the horror of cluster, mutated gems, forced fusion. Show her how she literally made everything worse. It wouldn't be enough to villain to go 180, but it would put a crack on the shell she lives inside.
Wow i didn't expect to write so much, sorry for my bad english and if you managed to read all of this, props to you, thank's for your time

The White redemption I could almost let slide cause its a kids show.
But the way they treated Rose, especially from the movie onward, never sat right with me. It had the same implications as digging through someones ancient social media history to find something to smear the current them with. It goes agaisnt the idea that people can change for the better.
And the crazy thing is, even at her worst she was still the best of the diamonds. She recognized alien life other then her own, fought against her family to stop genocide, and gave people like Garnet acceptence. But its all somehow spun as her being the source of every problem of the show. Like its somehow her fault the other Diamonds corrupted the gems and not, you know, the actual people who cast the spell!
Even Steven, and by extension the fandom, comes to hate her by the end, which just feels so wrong. Especially when he's being chill with the other Diamonds.

I actually enjoy the continuity. I like figuring it out on initial watch and the revisiting it on a re-watch, it is the main reason why adventure time is my favorite show. When something seemingly small in the show is introduced and then called back in an insane and world twisting way, it is just so cool seeing how big the world is and how things that come back years down the line. Obviously there are times where it is done poorly and it gets messy and overloaded but most of the time it is so good

Whats the use of feeling blue is honestly one of my favorites from the show and I sing it to myself sometimes to cheer up. I find the discordant harmony and out of sync backing vocals gives it and unsteady, disorganized feeling, which is contrasted with the message of pulling yourself together and getting out of a slump. It really encapsulates a certain feeling.

"joyful mc becomes more jaded," SOOOO many franchises and movies have done this especially in anime which both these works are obviously inspired by
"enemies send ufos to hunt our heroes" happens all of the time in space/alien media
"the good guys leader is actually a villain who was on the bad guys side" not exactly what happened in SU but that is not unique to either show, the "rebellion is being led by a dissenting member of the elite" happens plenty, usually its a runaway prince who objects to the evil ways of the court oh hey thats what happened in SU!
"the bad guys commit gemocide" WOW its almost like genocide is a very obviously bad thing that "the bad guys" do all of the time in media :,D!!
"mc goes to the enemy homeworld," again happens all of the time in space/alien media basically any time the heroes are fighting an alien army or even just involves aliens that's gonna happen
"the alien invaders are not what they seem" WOW I CAN'T BELIEVE IT seriously though SO many shows that have a war between heroes and villains will have the heroes realize that the "evil side" isn't just a flat 2D charicature of endless unfeeling Saturday morning cartoon villains
the most unique similarities are that they have an a race of genderless femme presenting humanoid gem people who can be shattered but not really die and can fuse together, which a lot of that feels fairly obvious stemming from the question "What would a species made up of gems look like?" and the following questions "can/how do they die?" "do the mangled bodies just sit there crying in agony for eternity?" "do they have biological sexes and sexual dimorphism?" (the answer for both creators was obviously was no I want to draw a bunch of pretty women and there's nothing wrong with that)
Actually they both feel like just the femme versions of the typical "Rock people species" that exist in all sorts of media!! i.e. big gray mostly masculine piles of rocks so the real starting question would have been "what if a species of rocks wasn't just a bunch of big gray men?" everything is inspired by something, also not every idea has to be unique! :D sometimes good ideas get reused this dosen't automatically make them bad because they existed before.

31:19 the problem with the consistency is that you can have characters go off model for comedy... but when the story gets serious? you have to have a consistent baseline for the characters (teen titans constantly went off model but whenever the fights were on? you never though "wait is beast boy bigger than cyborg?" which... happens in stephen universe... a LOT)

    • @Gatekid3
      @Gatekid3 3 місяці тому +1

Thats the thing though. you say you "have" to have a consistent baseline for a serious narrative.
I don't think so. I think that's just what we are used to. If you are deep in the story, you look past the animation errors and forget that these are not real people. when it comes to the media we love the writing, music, sound, and visuals all work to pull you in, but there will always be parts we look past in favor of the bits we like.
I feel like if the off model stuff is enough to put a person off the show there are other bigger things they don't like, and the inconsistency stands out more when you aren't fully locked in.
That's not to say visuals c
ant ruin a scene, they can, but I always question how much people really are bothered by the off model stuff, or if that's just the end of a much longer list of gripes.

    • @legomeaker101potato
      @legomeaker101potato 3 місяці тому +1

@@Gatekid3 writing and visuals are affected by the consistency of the animation. character sizes determine certain leverage and actions that can be taken in a fight, but if the sizes are constantly changing it is hard to imagine how they can change the tide of the battle or how they can be at and advantage/disadvantage.
can people ignore things they don't mind? sure. but that doesn't change the fact that it IS a problem and that it can take some people out of the story. (if it doesn't for you? thats great... but it was an issue for me and for some other people)
when I am deep into a story? I look deeper into it, I don't look past it, hell that is why I love the peridot arc but hate the white diamond one, because once you look deep into the character motivations and writing you see how the characters go from evil to good by having their beliefs be challenged constantly until they see how their ways aren't right and how they need to change is awesome... and then when the story skips past that for the final villain it just... falls flat...
also... there is a reason why we are used to consistency... because it is a standard, and shows we like should be held up to high standards and not just look past the issues because we like them. for me being a fan of something isn't mindlessly accepting everything it does, being a fan is being won over by something and being critical when those things are no longer being done

@@legomeaker101potato You are kind of jumping to all kinds of extremes
I'm not saying visuals don't matter. You are right. in a show where height is important, having characters change shape all the time could ruin everything. Steven universe doesn't rely on that same visual clarity **(except with Pink's gem. the amount/shape of facets on pink and steven's gem are different and thats the only visual error that bugged me because that is the big twist of the show).**
Even if Amethyst's height shifts, it's never to the point where it could have changed the outcome of any fight. She's always shorter than Jasper so the dynamic is never in question.
I'm not even saying it CAN'T be an issue. I'm just saying I have a hard time believing thats the main thing if it puts you off of the show. If its a flaw you see in a show you like, fine.
I have problems with some of the writing.By "look past", all i mean is this flaw doesnt ruin the show.
I'm talking specifically about being bothered by it enough to think the show isnt worth watching, because some people bring it up like it's a much bigger deal than it is.
being a fan isnt blindly accepting. I'm sure your favorite show has flaws that bug you, and some that don't. I'm not going to call you a blind worshiper for being able to enjoy SU despite hating the white diamond arc.
Hope that makes what I said more clear. I also nitpick shows more when I like them, but generally its easier for me to say art mistakes are a bigger deal when I'm already snowballing from other issues.

I will say, as someone who watched through Steven Universe as it was coming out, because of that attention to worldbuilding that you mention, most fans didn't really have a problem with the "Filler" episodes early on. Everyone, myself included was having fun learning about the characters, but also, were working to try and figure out all of the secrets that the series was hiding from us and trying to tell us via worldbuilding. There wasn't much that felt like filler because every episode gave us a piece of the tapestry making up the history of the gems, and the fandom actually figured out a lot waaaaay before any of the big reveals. By maybe like halfway in Season 1, we knew Garnet was a fusion, knew that gems had specific roles/castes, and knew about the existence of a Pink Diamond (The theory that Rose was Pink Diamond was even already floating around at this point).
I think that the filler only REALLY started to feel like filler around the time of the Aquamarine arc, and that was 100% due to Steven Bomb fatigue. I think it had been maybe 6 or 7 months since the last episodes at that point, and things were building up, but all 5 episodes were townie episodes with only the big one at the end setting up the trial arc. That was the point where the fandom really broke and truly came to hate "filler". If memory serves though, the sentiment had already been growing for awhile and it was due to the Steven Bombs, since it created the mentality of "We only get 5 episodes, why are we wasting it on this?" even if the episode was not a waste.
Personally though, I've always been a fan of the townie episodes. They're incredibly imporant to Steven's character growth and the theming of the show, as the whole focus is Steven being half-human and half gem. You can't have the show focus on that theme if Steven is only ever doing gem stuff. Plus, I just found it really cool that these characters who would just be background elements in any other show are all fully fleshed out characters.

About a month ago I rewatched SU for the first time since it ended too, but also with 2 of my friends who never watched it before. We all really enjoyed it, but only until the end of season 3. Season 4 had barely anything of importance and same for season 5 until the very end. There were way too many filler episodes right in the middle of important plot points we wanted to get back to seeing. There’s another reason why people hate on the show though that you didn’t touch on, and it’s that Steven turns from a goofy guy into someone who wants to solve everybody’s problems & becomes a huge asshole about it to all his friends. The climax of the show is someone pretty much forgiving nazis’ from all the genocide they did and want them to become good. The thing is, I’m all for trying to change the minds of people for the better, but not when it’s nazis who commit planet-wide genocide. This was addressed in Future, and we all really enjoyed the movie & future. The ending to future still brought me to tears just like it did when I watched it on TV. There’s some people out there who deserve forgiveness and I don’t think the diamonds should of been forgiven. There should of been some sort of consequences that just were never there. Other than that though show was pretty good.
It’s mentioned at the end of Undertale that there’s some people you’re just unable to reason with. Sometimes you have to resort to violence to serve the justice that is needed. That is how the real world works. I feel like that should of been applied to the ending of SU too.

But i genuinely think that SU wouldn’t be able to survive today because of the current industry, so I’m happy that it came out and got to tell a finished and well developed story before it went away for good. It laid so much more foundation for representation and experimentation for cartoons airing today! I truly think it’s a special and important show that should be respected.

My last comment I'll leave (I swear on Culver's Double Deluxes) is that the show's character models always rubbed me the wrong way and they should have had a dedicated character sheets for everyone because the show was more grounded, serious, and sometimes dipped into horror than being silly and exaggerated. So with that vibe, the character models and animation came off as the artists being lazy and/or incompetent.
Also, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic had a lot of bangers for being a little girl's show. Seriously, for the three songs of the Steven Universe whole franchise that I like and think are good, there are 10+ songs from MLP G4 that are solid hits. Seriously, the show was blessed to have Daniel Ingram as their musical composer.

In the Steven bomb format people had months to process big events so to finally get episodes only for it to be "filler" was infuriating. But when bingeing the show you don't have the same process time and the filler episodes work because they give you that downtime to think and process main events. I think one criticism of the story that really makes it difficult to enjoy the show for me is the way the show sympathizes with the colonizer in its later parts. Like, I don't care how sad the Diamonds are, they literally killed people, did awful experiments that resulted in the creation of crimes against nature so horrifying it caused one of the most stoic characters in the series cry, have a literal, actual human zoo and show no remorse for most of the things they did. It's a pretty hard sell, and the show's insistence that the types of people who commit these kinds of atrocities can be talked down to is laughable and quite distracting. I understand this is a family show about forgiveness, but one of the most important lessons regarding forgiveness is that not everyone deserves it, and some things just cross a line where forgiveness shouldn't even be considered.
