Love to know who else could have taken simple sounds like the sidestick and handclap sounds and turned them into something from another dimension just by pitching them down.
james brasfield if you look up the Revolution interview from last year Wendy and Lisa explain why Prince had them say that intro. It’s real interesting.
What I have noticed is the kick and snare are pretty basic in all of these patterns. It's the claps, hi-hats and percussion that gives them their real character.
True. Ultimately it’s the hardware and the nitrate of the samples. That thing sounds Phenomenal!!! I’ve done a few Prince re-creations on my page with the VProm VST by Aly James. Very close in sound, but nowhere near as crisp and chunky as a real Linn!!
@@taosophymusic I have a sample collection of damned near every drum machine ever made. I have both LM-1 and Linndrum collections but to do his artist stuff, LM-1 is the requirement. I've heard amazing things about the VProm
I just toured Paisley Part this past weekend and Prince's LM-1 is displayed there. His unit was highly modified with numerous extra toggle switches added!
Love that the description is a leftover of the days when anything Prince on UA-cam was strictly forbidden and even the mere utterance of his name meant you could get copyright strikes. I do not miss those days, but it’s a shame how they came to an end.
Good luck finding one. Only 500 units have been made and very hard to come by. The Aly James VPROM vst plugin is the closest thing. I highly recommend checking it out.
I bought a used LinnDrum back in 1986 for $200. I couldn't believe it. It worked perfectly and was in really good shape. It got stolen, which really depressed the hell out of me.
at around 1:30 u can hear what an average musician will hear when he is playing around with all these drummachines and synths. and then on the other side the song 1999 will show u you what a true gifted musical talent will hear when he is using all this equipment. and thats it, thats all the diffrence it takes between humans like prince and the average, and that difference will always be there, no matter if its a linn drum or a a piece of metalic trash or a whatever u play on.
@Doctor Too-Much Let's not go overboard with the Prince-tinted shades, shall we? He liked experimenting with such equipment because he wanted to find a definitive sound. Anyone with a vast knowledge and experience playing different genres like he did can come up with such sounds. Don't believe me? Check out Phoenix's Bankrupt! and Pond's The Weather albums. And Prince was no God, he was a mere mortal.
kingsoutherly He’s saying that you can use the same equipment as a great musician but never be them. True to an extent but it all depends on who we’re talking about.
I've always wondered how Prince would make the Linn drum work in a live concert they way he did. Transition smoothly the rhythm patterns from song to song as well as from concern to concert (as he changed the setlists slightly). I mean, the whole thing looked highly spontaneous despite the coldness of a drum machine. And, in the end, make this his signature sound... Genius!
I never got to see him live and he was my childhood hero, in terms of music anyway lol. Its possible that Prince wouldn't have even been doing that himself since he has so many other instruments/things to tend to. I'll have to look this up 🤔
The drummer Bobby had the LM next to his kit. They rehearsed for hours and hours, so he'd have had it down and possibly notes. On the rehearsal tapes you can hear prince tell him to slow it down a few BPM. There's talk his kit was modded to trigger the LINN. The patterns mostly remained static.
Hey mate, well your wish has come true. I hear the LM-1 all over pop today. Check out Taylor Swifts song "Style" and the song "Safe and Sound" by an artist I cant recall.
Steve Porcaro suggested that Roger Linn recorded samples of drum sounds onto Eproms so he did that but can't remember which drummers provided the samples. Roger himself grew dissatisfied of analog drum machines at the time claiming that they sounded like a box of crickets and could only play presets.
In the 1987 Kidsongs version of the song "Footloose", the Linn LM-1 sounds and the 196?/probably 1965 overdrive/distored/electric guitars and the Oberheim OB-8 patch "Brass Ensemble" mixed with the Yamaha DX7 internal patch "Pipes 1" were heard, someone who recorded the Linn LM-1.
During the Purple Rain tour, while Singing Delirious, he'd use the Let's Go Crazy pattern. Plus in the middle of it he'd play the change from the extended mix of Let's Go Crazy from the movie (when you see everyone running around)
Let’s face it, Prince could’ve made musical magic from inanimate objects you find around the home! The secret ingredient isn’t the LINN it’s him❤ Fantastic video though NEW SUB HERE!!!🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I've always had a weird fascination with the "knock on a door" drum playing throughout these albums, kind of like a secondary snare. Never heard it anywhere else but I love it.
1:44 Let's go crazyyy! One of my all time favourites of Prince 🙌🏼 Sounds pretty similar 2:43 OMG this is one of my favourite Prince drum beats, hell yes!
Performing these live is an ethical dilemma, depending on your stance on electronics vs live performance. If as a drummer you play Computer Blue live, for example, it sounds like it’s missing something if it’s just live drums. Those Linn sounds really make that beat. Purists might hate it if a drummer triggered the Linn snare and it was blended with the acoustic snare live, or even the whole Linn beat ran concurrently with the drums- but it really would help the song translate live. Ultimately Prince’s drummers used samples of iconic claps and snares that they triggered to augment the sound of their acoustic live drums in his performances.
It starts of with the beat of "When Doves Cry" then moves on... I also hear "Delirious" beats are crossed in with the opposite song... "Let's Go Crazy" mixed in with "Delirious" beat and so on. Great work though!
I realize that this video was about the LM-1. I’ve got to ask a question though. Realizing that the LinnDrum was not designed and assembled with the same editing capabilities as this one, has one ever been modified to include those other features?
No one can program the linn drumm like Prince. He made it an art form just being the genious that he was
Harold Foster Genius?
Harold Foster Someone who isn’t me told everyone that the LinnDrum was heard in the songs “1999” and “Little Red Corvette”.

That lil “tapping” sound was signature Prince

Must be the flanger he uses for the hi-hat or rimshot for some of the tunes.
A De-tuned Rimshot.

Great job. Have you tried using the separate outputs to run some through BOSS pedals?
Does it have a looper, like layer instruments over it and playback as play along?
Yes , that's exactly how it works, however only with its built in sounds. Its not a sequencer.
Lucky to own one myself :) serial under 100 and script buttons and large stop/start. It’s the beast! Unmatched to-date!

What is the effect clap sound on the intro of "let's pretend we're married"?
Question...if the LM-1 was doing all of this WTF was the drummer doing? Was he just for show and fill-in parts?
He was a live drummer, more cymbals than anything.
If you listen to the song 777-9311 I can tell you that the bass and snare was played by a drummer, but the hi-hat was played on a Linn-LM1

Fills , cymbals, hi hats, and live performances.
