Hi - I live in Portland, Oregon where we have Powell's Books. A glorious place - 3 locations in fact. It's a place where you can find new and used books side by side. I went today to sell books - you know, to make money and room for more books. With my store credit I got White Oleander (used, hardback) and The Passion According to GH (new, paperback). With more store credit to use next time. Thanks for the inspiration.🥰
Oh my favorite reads of winter?? Omg im gonna have to say Martyr! By Kaveh Akbar and A Minor Chorus by Billy-Ray Belcourt. The poet-turned-novelists are killin it for me lately!
Great video. I almost lost it when you showed your copy of "Of Mice and Men" because I grew up seeing that copy on my brother's bookshelf; that, and "The Pearl" from the same publisher. "The Pearl" is another tiny book you need to read with a box of tissues near you. This winter, the 3 best books I read were "Sula" by Toni Morrison, "Parable of the Sower" by Octavia Butler and "Killers of the Flower Moon" by David Grann. I loved the book much more than the movie. PS: I liked that final Jack Nicholson stare down.
Hahaha! Kubrick was in the room with me. And wow, that’s my dad’s copy. Do you know when they were distributed? I like that cover so much. I have one similar from a friend of Tortilla Flats.
I’ve listened to The Shards because of your recommendation and…IM OBSESSED TOO. I’ve finished it today and I just cannot stop thinking how good it was!!
Like you, I was all in with The Shards until, at a certain point, credulity was stretched way beyond the breaking point and from that juncture it became a 600 page, this is silly, eye roll. The very Gena Rowlands drunken mother scene at the beginning did provoke a kind of nostalgia. There was something about the book that felt like a Mike Nichols or Paul Mazursky film. I can’t decide whether this is hackneyed or retro.
I finished House of Leaves a week ago. I gave myself permission to skim or skip certain footnotes and footnoted chapters if the words did not contribute to the "main" storyline. I thought about the book for two days afterwards, it had a lingering effect on me that was oddly soothing. Yes, that $12 Million Stuffed Shark book needs an update with more recent stats and examples... and either a new book focused on digital art or have a new section about it. Imagine the intro to NFTs.
Oh wow, yeah House of Leaves is up there for me. I don’t hate fractured storytelling like that, but when I’m twisting my book around in public, I might feel silly.
@@AnaWallaceJohnson It's also so dang heavy.... imagine turning it upside down or to the side while waiting for your latte to come, and you drop the thing. It'll be fine, but it will may take the napkins and the salt shaker with it to the ground. Hahaha.
Hey, Ana! I think my favourite book this year has been 'The Fury' by Alex Michaelides - if you're ever in the mood for a thriller, his novels are incredible! 'The Silent Patient' is probably the best😊
favorite books so far! Sula (obvi) Tinfoil butterfly (earl is such a vivid character and i think about him once a week) and Down the Drain (i would listen to this on my little walks and it felt fun and dark and perfect)
ANA maybe you've already read but Small Fry by Lisa Brennan-Jobs is incredible-- especially if you're interested in tech/Steve Jobs. It's his daughters memoir and it was so cool to read about that world from her perspective
NEED to hear what you think about the ending of The Shards after you've finished it! I personally found the book a bit redundant sometimes but the ending changed my whole opinion on it! One "scene" gave me the biggest chills.. so good!
Oooh it had to be I Who Have Never Known Men. Amazing! Ps. I am part of the Ana Cult, all the more so since I’ve been playing catch up and having a binge.
I knew it was White Oleander from the spine!!! I have a copy of it for so long and still haven't read it :/ knowing it's your number one read so far this year so I definitely should grab the book asap!
@@AnaWallaceJohnson It was solid. It was a three star cute read for most of us. It was also interesting to get context from people who lived in NYC in the 90s
38 books since the beginning of the year for me. That’s crazy. I’ve discovered Kazuo Ishiguro; I will read every books. I loved Klara and the sun, Never let me go and the short stories about music. I am reading Jawbone by Monica Ojeda. I recommend. 22/11/63 by Stephen King was another love.
Just a Brooklyn boy. Always merry and bright. Henry Miller, Tropic of Capricorn (not Cancer) is the best "transgressive" and one of the holiest books I've read. It's arse-tarnishingly pathetic and real, passionate, intelligent, fantastic, revelatory, excoriating, paradoxical, surreal, pelagic, legendary, fabulous, funny and sad. White Oleander is on my list. Oleanders growing outside her door Soon they're gonna be in bloom up in Annandale I can't stand her Doing what she did before Living like a gypsy queen in a fairy tale Well, I hear the whistle but I can't go, I'm gonna Take her down to Mexico, she said oh no Guadalajara won't do
You talking about loving Steve Jobs brings back memories of my opposite feeling of him, he was a horrible person. I grew up in the Southbay (Silicon Valley) and he had a horrible reputation back in the 80s and into the early 2000s of degrading people and discarding his daughter.
I guess I didn’t love him, but more admired him as a kid. Then I got older and realized he was definitely void of any emotion. But there’s still a part of me that is fascinated by him (maybe that says something about me!)
Have you watched the movie of Crash? I've seen the movie but not read the book. I think I might still be a little... not quite traumatized but close, by the movie even though i saw it 1996.
Haven’t watched the full movie, but just listened to a podcast on it. The podcast is called You Have to Remember This and there was an episode on crash and the controversy around it. So good. Might not even need to watch the movie lmao
GOSH I would love to join your cult... If I ever have a regular job then you will be the first person I pay on patreon without a doubt! In the meantime I may as well ramble about what books I am reading right now... I am currently reading the first volume of Marcel Proust's "On the Path of Lost Time" which is SO DIFFICULT but very very good. I did not realise it was 12 volumes long... yikes! I just read Just Kids by Patti Smith (because of you!) and I think it was a canon event for my existence... GOSH. I am now trying to put more collaborative art in my life! I also got a major kick out of the Albanian "Agamemnon's Daughter" by Ismail Kadare, which was super super fun and that I highly recommend (Two novellas about the Albanian dictatorship). I have recently been sent the book "The Monkey's Mask" by Dorothy Porter, a lesbian detective verse novel which I hope to read as soon as possible, but I must finish Proust's volume for class. Also! I bought my first non-school play because of you! Phaedra's Love by Sarah Kane which promises to be horrifying. I would like to one day write an essay about Phaedra and feminine abuse and how her character has been depicted between the Greek antique and us. I would like you to know that my being subscribed to you has drastically widened my literary comfort zone and I could not be more grateful. (By the way, I sent you a friend request on Goodreads where I am Sophie Eikli. It's totally up to you if you accept it or not haha.)
Straight hair, who this? :) Do we all have to straighten our hair to join the Ana Cult ? Just curious because I think you look amazing but i don't have the motivation to straighten my hair. I could wear a white outfit though. The Gospel according to GH is amazing. I am hit or miss with Clarice but I loved that one. I have been meaning to read Crash for ages but keep putting it off for some reason . As for Bret Easton Ellis - I really really really want to read him. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about his writing but I'm afraid of animal abuse in his books (like what i've heard about american psycho)
Fun Fact: The song 'Video Killed the Radio Star' was inspired by one of Ballard's short stories.
Omg hahahaha I WANT MY MTV. Which story, do you know? He’s a wild boy
@@AnaWallaceJohnson It’s ‘The Sound Sweep’ story!
The passion according to G. H is such a fantastic novel.
Straight hair slay!!!!! Love the curls but this is a look. Another fabulous video Ana.

You cracked me up with your card song at the end! 😂 Great video!

I read "Crash" because of you and I would just like to say THANK YOU! It was such a wild reading experience and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Hahahaha definitely has that vibe written all over it, but somehow it worked for me. I am a drama lover and this just rubbed me so right
The straight hair! Okay- you gotta do more day in the life vids or talk about how you get through so much reading. Also stoked for the book club read!
You made me order White Oleander!!! can't wait

Thank you so much! 😊

Promise by Rachel Eliza Griffith, Shark Heart by Emily Habeck and Snow Hare by Paula Lichtarowicz
You’re just so stylish, and I love that I know where the outro music is from 😂 officially a member of the cult!!
ANA maybe you've already read but Small Fry by Lisa Brennan-Jobs is incredible-- especially if you're interested in tech/Steve Jobs. It's his daughters memoir and it was so cool to read about that world from her perspective
Recently read Another Brooklyn, great!
NEED to hear what you think about the ending of The Shards after you've finished it! I personally found the book a bit redundant sometimes but the ending changed my whole opinion on it! One "scene" gave me the biggest chills.. so good!

I’m a fan by Sheena Patel and Anne Franks’s diary- a re-read for my childhood. So so good
Oh wow. It really is the season of the reread! I’ve never read Anne Frank’s diary and I’m not sure why!
My book club is now reading laser writer II because we're all pretty much based in New York!

@@AnaWallaceJohnson It was solid. It was a three star cute read for most of us. It was also interesting to get context from people who lived in NYC in the 90s
I would ABSOLUTELY join your cult, it would be so slay💅✨
I would recommend "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace
