Much appreciation this video but clearly unbelievable with BROTHER for this happening. I still can't get it apart, why in the world would this even be happening to switch your label paper. I am beyond pissed right now, either gonna break it trying cause either way I have no way of using my label printer for my business due to not being able to get it apart. Other people's comments have helped to say it is glued. This BROTHER product is beyond ridiculous
This is brilliant thank you. I'm desperately trying to keep my plastic waste down and this design is so stupid! If I'd known about this issue I wouldn't have bought the printer.
Thanks for the video. I have a Brother P-Touch QL-1050. The crafty buggers must have started gluing the end on. I used a small straight screwdriver after trying to muscle it over and over. It finally popped off, but I could see where it was either glued or fused on the end. Anyway, SUCCESS! Did I mention that you are awesome? It works great!
Excellent! Had trouble popping the end off - it had been glued as other commenters had mentioned. Used a small pair of needle-nose pliers to get a good grip and leverage on the end piece and it came right off with little effort.
Many thanks. I bought a box with the carriages, however the next lot will be rolls :-) I found it easy to break the seal by placing the smaller side in a vice and working the cylinder free that way. Once you break the seal of glue, it falls out easy.
SOO helpful! Mine had glue at the bottom of the spool as well. I used a small screwdriver with a hammer to make indentions all the way around the main spool which seemed to loosen up the glue. I was then able to pop off the end.
Thanks man!!!! There's always someone in the world with the same problem. In my case the sliding piece was with pasted with glue at the end of the other cylinder, so we had to apply torque and almost break the piece, but from now on we know the technique :) Thanks again!
Tried this today. My two spare plastic spindles are glued together tightly. However, my two spare rolls and the one currently in my printer are reusable and the plastic spindles popped apart with no problem. I went to Amazon to look at the DK-2205s (by Betckey) and found two options - one with 10 rolls and two reusable spindle units and the other with 10 rolls each having its own single-use spindle unit. I will be hanging onto my reusable spindle units and purchasing refills with the reusable spindles as well.
Thanks so much for making this video. I kept trying to pry at the wrong end when I bought a box of 2000 labels that were incompatible with my printer. It was past the return date, and I didn't want to throw them away. Then I tried to roll them onto the old spool and that took for ever and it still didn't work! The end of mine was also glued on (bought printer in 2021), but all it took was a precision screw driver wedged into the bottom and work your way around the cylinder you'll see it start to come up a bit. It took maybe 2 minutes!
Awesome to hear KiLLrFOX916! I had a similar experience which is why I decided to post the video. Seems that many are using a screwdriver so I better see if there’s a better solution to post. Hope you have a great week!
Thank you. Very helpful. I saw the guy with the screw driver video and I was going to do what he did until i said to myself, there must be an easier way, then I saw your video. Much better and easier. Getting the base off was a bit a struggle for me, couldn't get it off with my hands so I applied so WD40 to it and it snapped right off. Very cool. Thanks for the information. Thank Goodness there is UA-cam.
Thx for the helpful video. I had also trouble popping the end off. I put a small screw driver with the big end first into the hole and push strongly on a table with the front tip until the end popped off, also almost broke it but it still works to put it together....
Love hearing about your ingenuity Marcus! Sometimes we need to push things to the edge of breaking to get the results we need! Hope you have an awesome week!
Very Helpful. I would have never figured this out. Mine was glued together (I could see the glue points inside) and took a lot of muscle. After it was disassembled there was a small chip in the cylinder but it still went back together
I am not strong enough to separate it. I used wise loosely, put 1 inch open wrench on bottom portion . One light knock with hammer and cartridge work like charm. Thank you for showing me which part to hit.
I was really confused about watching a couple of you cut the roll off or use water to get the roll off. I did not need to do this. I skipped that step, and just applied some pressure and took the end off with my hands, and then changed the roll once I noticed that's all you did to disassemble it once the roll was off. I'd suggest everyone skip the useless steps and just take the end off and change the roll. 💃 Good luck.
Thanks for the input and for watching. I’ve heard from other viewers that the Brother Label rolls have changed a few times since this video was made several years ago. I have also seen one video where the guy turned the bottom of the end of the roll holder outward as he pulled and it popped right off. Some say theirs is glued, others say theirs is pressed in. Some say it pulls right off, others couldn’t get it at all. Too bad Brother just doesn’t make it easier for people. Regardless, I enjoy hearing updates from people and advice that can help others. Thanks again!
Worked for me! But I recommend oil. I soaked the end that separates in vegetable oil for a minute...then applied torque. Just make you wash thoroughly with warm soapy water!
Where I was I had no water available, so I took a screwdriver and pryed between the empty roll and the end support and it came right out. Tad bit of force but it was fine. Probably saved a lot of time
The piece to remove have glue, you can help you with a tiny screwdriver and leverage on the outside piece. After, take an exacto and remove the glue on the pieces.
Thanks! Great input. I think in the time since my video was made they have tried to make it harder to remove the piece. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
No need to get it all wet and remove the old roll. The old roll actually makes it easier to pop the side off took me about 2 sec to pop it off it is attached so the first time is kinda difficult and you feel like it broke but it just press fit back in with the new labels
2022 update: they now glue the removable parts together. Used the soak method, then took a good bit of force / slight twisting to separate. (others have used a screw driver with this success too)
Thanks for the info! I had also wondered how to use the refill rolls. I ended up just prying it apart without soaking the cardboard; I just took the cardboard roll off once it was apart. :-)
It seems this can also work in some cases. Soaking the roll just allows a better grip. Especially for the hard to remove cartridges. Some seem harder to remove than others. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks this was super helpful. I agree with a comment below that it is hard to snap it off. I needed two hands and it was tough but I got it! Next time I am sure it will be easier. Great video, thanks again.
When he said very quietly under his breath that it isn't as easy to pry off because he had already previously done it, that is a massive understatement I have been pulling with all of my might sort of not breaking it and it will not come off. Wish there was more details of what it was like the first time to get it off. Appreciate the video though but that small little nugget of info that was said very quietly and fast LOL falls into the category of the small print where the devil resides LOL. Brother should be ashamed for purposely designing something so difficult to take apart. I'm not an engineer but I can look at this design and see many different ways to make this so that it isn't difficult. They most likely want you to buy the whole replacement part every time.
When I made this video long ago I think they were just pressed in. Based on what people have been saying, it seems they started glueing them (maybe to further prevent people from disassembling them). Pretty sure they rather people be forced to buy their replacements. Did you ever get it off?
I literally just put a bit of hair oil on it waited 5 mins and pulled hard came right off. Someone else in the comments said they used vegetable oil, wd-40 so use any type of oil, wait and pull.
Hi What do you use this label printer for if you don't mind me asking? I'm not sure if it's the best thing to print shipping labels with. I've already bought one just thinking what other things I can use it for
Have you looked carefully everywhere to make sure there is nothing obstructing the labels path? Maybe like a small piece of label jammed in somewhere? I just had a similar issue with a receipt printer. The paper wouldn’t feed through and was crumpling up at the end. I knew it was jammed, but couldn’t see anything. After a few minutes with a flashlight I found the issue and that’s exactly what it was. If you can’t figure it out after a day or so just make a short video with your problem. Sure someone can help you out and I would definitely be willing to take a look.
Works well but you dont need to do any dipping it in water first or trying to remove the cardboard tube. If you think about it, the side pulls right off after hes messed about removing the tube, so why bother, just pull that side off first, and slip the tube off. Worked for me.
Mike Hallam Thanks for the pointer. Sure it could work either way, but the reason I dip it in the water first and remove the cardboard is so that I can get a better grip on both ends of the cylinder. Hope that helps. Have a great day
That’s weird. Not sure why that would happen. Maybe the cartridge isn’t seating properly. Please post here again if you figure it out. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope you find a resolution.
I just got mine couple days ago. I literally just put a bit of hair oil on it waited 5 mins and pulled hard came right off. Someone else in the comments said they used vegetable oil, wd-40 so use any type of oil, wait and pull.
6min Video and in the end the roll is not installed... Seems it helped a lot of people, but i just wasted my time, let's see if there is another video which actually shows how to install the label roll.
If you don't have one already, you will need the 1 inch wide cartridge. I think the cheapest way to get one is to buy a single roll with the tape. Here's an example of a cheap reusable one amzn.to/2K0IR4k
Here is a tutorial on using Brother p-Touch Editor free software to create label templates, in case it helps someone. ua-cam.com/video/v4FL7ryHvvY/v-deo.htmlsi=I6837gLRUlHxzE9a I have a QL700 and find the software frustrating to use on my PC. But it has great functionality, in theory, you can print labels in bulk from a CSV spreadsheet. Think mailing labels for Christmas Cards, or mail merge.
I’ve been wanting to get a label printer for my small business for the longest time and finally pulled the trigger. I’m glad I did ! This machine is great ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxw55tQTywUAAOsbrlwxONZULry77sFF1Q and the blue/green color matches the rest of the accents in my office. My favorite part is how small the footprint is. It’s less than 1/4 the size of my regular printer.Set up was fairly easy. Seller will email you a link with video instructions Which I found to be more helpful than the written instructions. I use a Mac and had no issues. They even included an adaptor for USB to USB-c which is great because I’m always losing mine! I had a few issues getting the labels to print properly and wasted quite a few sheets. You need to play around with the settings to get everything adjusted just right. If you have the wrong settings, it’ll crop off the edges or feed through blank labels. These aren’t issues with the machine though, just user error.
David Jimenez No. Sounds like it may be a communication error. Check your connection with cables, etc and make sure the cartridge is inserted all the way in the machine and not loose. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the advice. I have upgraded my equipment and will be making much better videos soon that will be posted on my channel. Thanks again and stay tuned.
@njp But he's showing a Brother cartridge in this video, it must be possible to separate the pieces without breaking or ungluing them? Hopefully I can figure it out in the next 90 seconds as I need to print labels and get to the Post Office.
Sorry for not replying sooner and for the difficulty with your attempt. Did you ever get it open? I think using warm/hot water helps a lot. Thanks for sharing.
Haha that’s actually pretty funny and true. The video is admittedly terrible and hard to watch. It’s from 2016 and one of my first videos. I can’t believe it still gets views and never expected it to get so many. I now have a nice tripod and the quality of my videos is now much better. Please check them out if you have a chance. New content will be coming in the next few days. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Thanks again and have a great day!
Haha I agree. This video is terrible. I keep planning on remaking it. Maybe I’ll post the new version soon. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a great week!

A LIFESAVER. I actually didn't know that you had to buy a replace roll with the cartilage.

Agreed. Terrible design ideology from brother. I'd have done the same.
Props to the video maker for doing all of this one handed!
Agreed. I don't have enough power to open it😢

Not me at work panicking because I ran out of labels and need to replace it haha
Worked well for me, thank you!
I used hot water by using my electric cattle though.
Very Helpful. I would have never figured this out. Mine was glued together (I could see the glue points inside) and took a lot of muscle. After it was disassembled there was a small chip in the cylinder but it still went back together
You can also saw it in half with a knife and the paper roll holds it together whilst printing ;) I couldn't get mine off, so this was my solution.
Good job working with what you got. I think some are probably glued on better than others. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do!

or aceton nails remover )
Hey, thanks man, I knew there had to be a way to do this!
Super helpful, worked like a charm.
the pressed end is also glued so you will need a lot of force but careful enough not to snap the plastic.
I had to use a c clamp 🗜️
Where I was I had no water available, so I took a screwdriver and pryed between the empty roll and the end support and it came right out. Tad bit of force but it was fine. Probably saved a lot of time
Sounds like a good strategy Jerry! Thanks for sharing!
i oiled the pressed side, grabbed both ends with a rag and pulld them apart. i believe the lubrication helped it pull apart.
Great idea! Thanks for the comment!
The piece to remove have glue, you can help you with a tiny screwdriver and leverage on the outside piece. After, take an exacto and remove the glue on the pieces.

This video was super helpful. Thank you a lot!!🥰🥰🥰
You're so welcome!
Thank you for a straight forward vid on how to do this.
if you are looking for how to replace the roll, it starts at 3:25 and ends at 3:35...
Thanks!
Wearing dishing washing gloves after it has been oiled also helps to get a good grip when pulling this device apart.
That’s a great tip! Thanks for sharing and for watching!

Yeah I think it varies from roll to roll. Thanks for the advice and for watching!
Thanks for posting! Haven't run out of my sample yet! But will try when I run out!
Thanks for the comment. Did you run out of paper yet? Did it work for you?
Thank you for your video deep thinker.
Thank you very much for learning me your carefull steps with this. Great help!
THANK YOU
2022 update: they now glue the removable parts together. Used the soak method, then took a good bit of force / slight twisting to separate. (others have used a screw driver with this success too)

Pretty sure mine is super glued LOL I cannot get this thing apart for the life of me. That's unfortunate I have a whole box of rolls
You are really the best! Thank you
Thanks so much for sharing this! 👌
Worked perfect, thanks!
Thanks !! It was great help !!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Fernando!
great tutorial, thanks!

Awesome! Glad I could help. Thanks for sharing!
I like your content :)
Thank you so much😍😍😍
I can’t seem to pry the piece off, any recommendations?
I literally just put a bit of hair oil on it waited 5 mins and pulled hard came right off. Someone else in the comments said they used vegetable oil, wd-40 so use any type of oil, wait and pull.
I submerged mine in very hot water for like 2 minutes and it came right off!!
Thanks man 👍🏼
Hi
What do you use this label printer for if you don't mind me asking? I'm not sure if it's the best thing to print shipping labels with. I've already bought one just thinking what other things I can use it for
I used mine to label bags for products I was selling. A lot of people use it for shipping labels as well. Thanks for watching!
Can you load this printer with non-label thermal paper, for point-of-sale use? Realizing it might require the registration marks on the edge. Thanks!
Not sure, but I wouldn’t think so unless Brother made paper specifically for that reason. Good luck.
Really nice
OMG!! THANKS MAN.
I've only used one roll on my brother q800 and I'm having a hell of a time getting the new roll through the feed, any ideas?? appreciate it
Have you looked carefully everywhere to make sure there is nothing obstructing the labels path? Maybe like a small piece of label jammed in somewhere? I just had a similar issue with a receipt printer. The paper wouldn’t feed through and was crumpling up at the end. I knew it was jammed, but couldn’t see anything. After a few minutes with a flashlight I found the issue and that’s exactly what it was. If you can’t figure it out after a day or so just make a short video with your problem. Sure someone can help you out and I would definitely be willing to take a look.
You could pushed on the cardboard roll on the side to open the slot and than slide the roll off. 😂
That didn’t work for me, but definitely worth trying first!
Cheers mate, saves you some dolla!
Glad to help!
hi do you think I can use 57mm instead of 62mm please ?
You mean can use a smaller label roll on a larger roll holder? I’m sure it’s possible especially if you use some kind of makeshift spacer.
thank u so much
I had the same model, same exact as the video, yet it didn't work at all.
Awesome trick!
Let me ask you a question; Can I use that printer to use on eBay from an iPhone?
Thanks!
This printer is not intended to be used with a iPhone or other mobile device but here is a link to the new wireless printer that is amzn.to/2NPLFnc
Thank you!
Your welcome! Thanks for the comment.
Only whispering is quieter than this volume in the video. 🤔
Vielen Dank
If it is glued together WD40 will do the trick
Works well but you dont need to do any dipping it in water first or trying to remove the cardboard tube. If you think about it, the side pulls right off after hes messed about removing the tube, so why bother, just pull that side off first, and slip the tube off. Worked for me.
Mike Hallam
Thanks for the pointer. Sure it could work either way, but the reason I dip it in the water first and remove the cardboard is so that I can get a better grip on both ends of the cylinder. Hope that helps. Have a great day
Could be hot water or oil helps to weaken the glue?
You don't need to put in water, just use little more muscle. :)
Great idea but wish it went as easy, could not prise mine apart for love or the money 🙄 but thanks anyway
Thanks A lot
Your welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting.
will it work with the ql 800?
I did this and it worked, but now my printer is printing blanks and has a red flashing light...
That’s weird. Not sure why that would happen. Maybe the cartridge isn’t seating properly. Please post here again if you figure it out. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope you find a resolution.
They must be making them different now because there’s no way you can snap that off with one hand much less two hands. The struggle is real.
Mine will not come off even if I slam it with a hammer...
I just got mine couple days ago. I literally just put a bit of hair oil on it waited 5 mins and pulled hard came right off. Someone else in the comments said they used vegetable oil, wd-40 so use any type of oil, wait and pull.
I love you
The labels now come with plastic rolls that cannot be removed. ARRGH!
Then I will buy one of those and figure out a workaround for us! Stay posted!
6min Video and in the end the roll is not installed... Seems it helped a lot of people, but i just wasted my time, let's see if there is another video which actually shows how to install the label roll.
Sorry. Hope you found what you’re looking for.
Thanks!!!
Your welcome Rodrigo! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Please, i have a 1 inch wide roll, any idea how i can get it to work on this machine?
If you don't have one already, you will need the 1 inch wide cartridge. I think the cheapest way to get one is to buy a single roll with the tape. Here's an example of a cheap reusable one amzn.to/2K0IR4k
It would be helpful to see how the other side is installed
Thanks for the excellent feedback. I will be making another version of this video soon and will keep this in mind when doing so. Thanks again!
aceton helps better

David Jimenez
No. Sounds like it may be a communication error. Check your connection with cables, etc and make sure the cartridge is inserted all the way in the machine and not loose. Thanks for watching.
I knew there had to be a trick, I spent 10.00 on a new cartridge but I have 2 printers. By the way get a tripod, it will make for better videos.
Thanks for the advice. I have upgraded my equipment and will be making much better videos soon that will be posted on my channel. Thanks again and stay tuned.
My roll its so hard to open My hands hurt so much :(
keep trying! i just did! i found they stick the part we try to take off!!!!
Did you get it apart? Try using warm/hot water when soaking the roll. Thanks for your comment.
OMG use a phone holder/mini tripod. Why do people do youtube videos with one hand?
I CAN´T GET IT OPEN :( IT´S THE FIRST TIME
Stupidest machine ever, i'm about to break it apart
me too I´m almost crying its so hard
@njp But he's showing a Brother cartridge in this video, it must be possible to separate the pieces without breaking or ungluing them?
Hopefully I can figure it out in the next 90 seconds as I need to print labels and get to the Post Office.
Sorry for not replying sooner and for the difficulty with your attempt. Did you ever get it open? I think using warm/hot water helps a lot. Thanks for sharing.
Why don't you use your DIY skills to make a holder for your camera, freeing up your other hand for much better videos
Thanks again and have a great day!

you could have made this video 30 seconds long instead of me listening to you whine for 5 minutes
but thanks for showing me how to do it
Haha I agree. This video is terrible. I keep planning on remaking it. Maybe I’ll post the new version soon. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a great week!

Mumble mumble waffle waffle. Sheesh.

Speak more clearly, take the tape off and run it through the machine. Show how it works after installing the new roll.
Completely agree. Thanks for the feedback. Next version of this video will be much better quality and will be posted soon. Thanks again!
Thank You
