In 1946, the U.S. and the Philippines signed the Treaty of Manila, whereupon the United States recognized the independence and sovereignty of the Republic of the Philippines. The Treaty contained a provision that allowed the U.S. to retain existing military bases and assets, which the U.S. continues to actively use.
The Japanese occupation of the Philippines occurred between 1942 and 1945 during WWII. Filipinos staged guerrilla resistance against the Japanese until 1945. The Philippines was liberated from Japanese control by Allied forces in 1944. The Philippines was granted full independence by the United States in 1946.

Filipinos claim that the map drawn by Spanish Catholic priest Pedro in 1734 is "the first scientific map of the Philippines". This map in addition to the“Ghost Island Reef” error, there are obvious errors in the mapping of northwest Luzon and other coastlines, but the Filipinos pretended not to see it. The Philippines believes that the Panacot Island Reef among the 3 islands off the coast of Luzon in this erroneous map is the Huangyan Island. In short, during the period before 1778, due to the continuous errors in the longitude of Huangyan Island on the map, it was seriously eastward, making it more like an offshore island in the Philippines, so that some erroneous maps painted Huangyan Island in the same color as Luzon Island, and the so-called "sovereignty" has been wrongly placed by cartographers. From 1734 to 1778, only 44 years later, the error on the map of Scarborough Shoal was corrected. Although Huangyan Island was once classified as a Spanish colony together with the western Pacific islands, it has never been included in the sovereignty of the Philippines.
It was not until 1748 that the British ship Scarborough ran aground on the rocks of Huangyan Island, prompting the British to re-understand Huangyan Island. In the early days, the British still marked the location of Huangyan Island according to the original erroneous map. Finally, due to solving the technical problems of clock technology and longitude measurement, in 1778, Huangyan Island was accurately marked on the map for the first time, but at this time, two non-existent "ghost island reefs" still coexisted with the real Huangyan Island until it was completely abandoned by western cartography circles in the first half of the 19th century. After the map location is accurate, the sovereignty of Huangyan Island can no longer be mistakenly assigned to a colony.

This map makes detailed measurements of the Xisha and Zhongsha Islands, also adopts the Spanish measurement of Huangyan Island in 1800, and announced that in the 1734 map drawn by Spanish Catholic priest Pedro, the three islands and reefs off the coast of Luzon identified by the Philippines no longer exist. In other words, based on the absence of islands and reefs, the Philippines claimsto have 'sovereignty' over Huangyan Island. Due unable to face it, the Philippine government has been avoiding such more accurate maps of the period.
