It didn't really start until Mariah Carey came along, and even though we know she is mixed, the fact that she was very fair and could sing added to her success and while many artists before had been utilizing melisma for days, it's not until she came along that it seemed to have gone through the roof. So yes, it's screaming or something else when it's straight from the source.
But where is she screaming them tho, she executes them well and was giving the crowd what they wanted, in other atmospheres I’m sure she holds back more and I will say there were more than a normal main stream song will need but she is definitely a beast vocalist...
