    Have been looking forward to this. What a big scale this wilderness is on, and how stark and beautiful.

      Great to hear that! Yes, it truly is 'large scale' if you're used to other European landscapes. I just finished another hike called "Nordkalottleden" (sometimes called "Arctic Trail" in English) and let me tell you, that was wild! 😄 l hope you enjoy 'chapter 2' on Sunday!

    Hi Antonio. Nice one, that looked super tough. In hindsight do you think a pair of snow shoes would be worth taking ? You can get a pair weighing only 640g. I'm interested to hear how your tent and sleep pad worked out in the cold conditions. Were the trail runners OK or do you think boots would have been better with all the snow ? I'm amazed you didn't lose a couple of toes.

      Hi James and thanks for the contribution to the channel! Much appreciated 🙏 We only got snow on a couple of days (days 2 and 3) and we managed well without the snow shoes. Yes, we sank in the snow here and there, but not all the time so no need for snow shoes.
      I had a 'mobile heating' with me (wife) so it all worked well... Seriously, in hindsight, l wished l had bought the 'winter' version of my Thermarest pad (for all year long use) instead of the one l have (thermarest neoair xtherm instead of xlite). In my experience, if you aren't properly insulated from the ground, you'll have a hard time warming up. When buying for a sleeping pad, pay attentio to the 'R-value.' The tent did well, too, no problems there.
      Running shoes were perfectly fine for the conditions. If we had been walking only in snow all day long, one day after the other, then boots and gaiters are probably a must. Sam, the US guy you can see in the video was wearing Gore-Tex boots. They got flooded in the inside so he had even colder feet than us (if that is possible!😅) as the water never got out of his boots.
      Following up on the previous paragraph, while walking the "Nordkalottleden - Arctic Trail" (have you seen that video? My latest upload) l walked one full day on snow (postholing almost all day long, 25-27km). I did feared for my right toe. It got very, very painful and, until the other day that l went to have a pedicure (once here back to London), l had a suspicious 'black/dark brown' spot right where l had had the most intense pain. l even thought it could've been a bit of frostbite! Go figure... Now it's all fine (post pedicure). But yes, if you're expecting to walk all day in snow, then boots and gaiters are probably the safest option and surely the one l'd recommend.

      I should have posted these questions on your video of the Nordkalottleden because you seem to had really cold conditions and lots of snow. Would you change any of your answers to the above considering what you endured on the Nordkalottleden ? Thanks.

      @alwaysforwardyt  3 роки тому +1

      @@jameslogan8193 No problem! l actually answered the above having in mind all my experience with snow. But, let me add that my toughest day on the Nordkalottleden would've been easier had l had snow shoes. The rest of the time the snow levels were manageable, be it because there was less of it or because there was a path made by other hikers (thus making the going a lot easier. That was the case for most of the Finnish section, from Saarijärvi hut to the Norwegian hut called Somashytta).
