I'm retired from NASA space Center out of Mississippi, they are claiming to take vibration away is faults, it does not do anything except add weight to the Shaft and to the Armature, it does not quite and the noise, it does not make it perform any better. Is just an extra piece on the trolling motor that's it. You will have bearing noise to contend with brushes on the Armature as it rotates and you will have electrical noise also. All Armature's that small of application should be balanced in a field range of .23 mills
I fish for a living,guiding, tournaments ect. (MLF Toyota Series) I’m on the water 300 days a year literally...About a year ago I dropped a cylinder on my Mercury ProXS 250 and at the time didn’t have the 8500$ bucks to replace the power head and believe this or not I raised the money for the repairs doing some odd jobs but mostly traveling to tournaments still, some up to 4 hour away with a outboard that wouldn’t run totally depended on the trolling motor (Lowrance Ghost with 3 brand new group 31 AGM blue tops) In this 7 long months of raising 8k for repairs still fishing from the rig daily I got to be VERY in tune with the range,performance, and the feel of the power threw out the day sometimes traveling 4 to 5 miles one way then making it back.... At the time I wanted all the advantages I could get from the electric motor being solely dependent on the unit.... This is where the prop nut came in from BOB’s Machine Shop.. Supposedly the best on the market at the time and still claim to be the most consistent and balanced... Very quickly within 3 hours of using the product there was was a noticeable increase of power being drawn from my battery’s.. I wouldn’t be scared to say up to 25% more power was being used basically any given hour actually cutting my fishing time, or better yet my trolling motor travel I guess you’d call it bye 25 to 30%.... Fishing literally every single day on tour trolling motor you’d be surprised how in tune you get with your electric motor... Needless to say I quickly removed the prop nut and went back with the original washer and locknut.. Everything went back to normal for me... Basically if it weighs more (which it weights 30 times more than a single locknut) it’s going to use more power, Period!! The guys that get one on there boat from the get go don’t really notice any difference nor had anything else to compare it too because they always ran one and typically gona be the guys that’ll argue with you that it’s doesn’t make a difference.. Take it or leave it 🤷♂️... Is what it is honestly.. I really wanted to run one for the convenience of changing the shear pin if need be without any tools..... They look cool,about it really
Being from a technical/ construction/ engineering background, I had my doubts that it would make any difference, and this test proves it. All hype- But it does have a bling factor, I guess. I'm buying baits, instead.....
I know this is an older vid….. but to add to the convo for those reviewing in present day, these type of nuts add a potential major problem. If you were to ever bust your shear pin, there is no way to get the prop off, as you cannot access the screwdriver slot on the shaft to hold the shaft in place to twist off the nut. You would need to cut the prop off to get the shaft to hold it, to then get the nut off.
My take from all that was that (numbers being accurate and correct) the Hydronut is all fluff and no buff. With little to no significant value to factually show that it can, in fact, do as advertised to do... which is to dampen the noise of your trolling motor and significantly enough to justify dropping a decent coin on a piece of scrap metal that actually performed almost worse when using it. Talk about FALSE ADVERTISING! Thank you for doing the independent evaluation and testing that clearly shows the FRAUD in this particular product from a company that thought anglers wouldn't be able to get "THE REAL" facts. Hopefully this video gets spread around enough (goes viral) to expose the actual TRUTH about this fraudulent so-called fishing product and how the "Elite" pro anglers whom endorse this product are either misinformed or are just trying to scam the public into buying a useless product showing/proving that the so-called "pros" don't have a clue ! While you have it apart. Tune/sync your motor. It’s two small bolts and twist it to find the sweet spot then tighten back up. That along with the nut should be a dynamic difference. You can feel it through a transom mount trolling motor.
This reminds me of the high dollar one way kayak scupper plug that was suppose to let water out but not in. I tested them and when out of the water they did let the water out. When the kayak was in the water the pressure from the water pushing up on the bottom of the scupper plug kept any water from draining out. UGH!
Another problem with the Hydronut is that, unless you drill a hole through the center of it, you cannot use a screwdriver to hold that shaft while unscrewing it. If your shear pin breaks, you are screwed.

for $60 I'd try making something, maybe a cut off and well positioned soda pop bottle. I made 2 little V's out of sheet metal, say 12 inches tall and put one in front of the 'down tube' and the other behind it, you cut through the water with less splashing and that means less noise and even a bit of battery savings from not having to throw that water up into the air. thanks for posting this
If your prop is a little out of balance i can see where this product would help dampen the sound some as well as help your motor run more efficient. By adding weight closer to the center of the shaft there would be less wobble of the prop.. I wish you would have done the same experiment on multiple motors, it definitely would have been more scientific.

I'm perplexed about one thing: If the shear pin actually shears while the Hydro-Nut is installed, how do you get it off? The armature shaft is completely covered, so you can't put a screwdriver in the end slot. The propeller (normally held when installing/removing Hydro-Nut) will spin freely on the shaft because of the broken shear pin. I believe that anyone who uses a Hydro-Nut should drill the center so that a screwdriver has access to the end of the armature shaft.
This is true. I asked about this a long time ago. They won’t respond to this question. Iaconelli at one time was promoting this product or a similar one and I asked him as well. Was ignored. They know this is a problem and refuse to address it.
Another guy mentioned this too above he said you’d have to drill a hole in the centre of the hydro-nut well enough size hole to get a screw driver in to hold the shaft properly

ALSO How about putting the MIC on the side of your boat in the water so it gets a better true reading of the noise and not so far from it. After all Isn't your boat where you are fishing from and where your fish finder is and not on the bank..

What about if you break the shear pin? Then you need a saw to cut your prop off. I’ll just carry an adjustable and screwdriver because those are small and easy lol. It’s funny how people act like those are exotic tools to have onboard
This is a marketing ploy. Does not work as either a sound dampener or heat sink. Worse of all, if you break the shear pin, which is a safety device, you cannot remove the prop because access to the shaft end screwdriver slot is blocked. You will need to saw off the conical end to access the motor shaft. I would not recommend buying. Stay with the Minn Kota washer and nylock nut !!

The biggest advance I see is easy to take prop off to check if it has line on it, which means you will check it more often.

A prop with nicks in it will be very loud under water. I keep my props smoothed out with sandpaper.

Good point. This tested audible noise. It didn't test vibration in the water. That test would be interesting to see done.
