Bought a 19 with a Aisin to replace my 14 with a 68 rfe. The new transmission seems to be a bit “grumpier” than the older one with hard shifts at times. Only have 35k miles on the truck. I took it to Auburn dodge and they said there wasn’t anything wrong with it but I’m not sure what to think at this point
The Aisin shits you into gear because it thinks your permanently towing 20,000 + lb. Almost swapped to Aisin but ended up doing a Revmax with all billet parts and mine still kicks like a horse sometimes between 2-4th gears. Pretty sure the stock 68fre comes with a weak valve body and clutch that doesn’t lock so it feels smoother but is actually just operating slower.
Aisin Trans shifts harder then 68rfe. It was kinda weird at first when i got my 19 especially when it downshift from 2nd n back down to 1st when your pulling heavy trailer of road . Or it likes to shift from 1st to 2nd sooner then i like .but found It's built that way. Ive notice 4th gen and older ram with aisin shifts smoother . Got a 14 Laramie recently with 146k on it for $33k. Anyhow, the truck is lifted on 35’s. My biggest complaint is sloppy/loose steering and pretty bad bump steer. I replaced the steering box because when I bought it someone definitely overtightened the set screw on the steering box and it was all over the road and clunking when I turned the wheel had to replace it because the set screw did not want to budge. Now I don’t get the clunking and it doesn’t wander everywhere like it used to with the new box. I also put a power steering box brace on it, and put an adjustable track bar on it, yet still fairly sloppy steering and a decent amount of play in the wheel. I know it’s just kinda going to happen with a lifted truck no matter what, they have weird steering issues but I want to at least try to make it better. What do you think I could do to help reduce the sloppy steering and bad bump steer?
It would have sold here for $33 in a minute in W-NY. I balked on a '18 3500 Tradesman single axle HD w/Aisin w/150k miles for $30k, it had been just driven and not worked. (parts runner). I've regretted it since 8( --gary
