    good question. it actually doesn't matter which variable is on the top and which is on the bottom, just as long as it's the same in both cases. for example, 4/2 = 2/1, and i can flip both and say 2/4 = 1/2. so you can write it as V1/n1 = V2/n2, or n1/V1 = n2/V2, whichever you like better.

    the 32.0 has 2 significant figures, not 3. The 0 after the decimal isnt significant unless there are numbers behind it. Nitpicking, i know. But yeah while you were solving it the first time around, i decided to not convert it to moles and solve it. Worked fine. then i converted it to moles and still worked. I like how you take time to check to see everything cancels out and your units are correct.

    • @Erik200619
      @Erik200619 7 років тому +3

      Incorrect. All trailing numbers (including zero) after a decimal point are significant. If you're going to be presumptuous enough to try correcting someone who actually teaches chemistry, it's probably a good idea to also make sure you know what you're talking about.

  • @olojondro73

    You can absolutely keep working with mass instead of moles since 32 g/mol is a common factor on both sides of the ecuation and just cancels out, as evidenced by how your first step was to divide by 32 and your last step was to multiply by 32. By doing this, though, the error is conceptual, since n usually denotes moles, so saying n = 50g is wrong from a nomenclature standpoint, but mathematically it works. It's important to know WHY it works, though, because as simple as it looks in this example, other problems are much harder and you gotta keep track of what your n is, what your m is, what your molar mass is, and how they are all related.

  • @yukelid
    @yukelid 8 років тому

    Conversion into moles isn't necessary as mass is proportional to number of moles. Solving for n2/79=50/48 also yields 83.

  • @cmac8893
    @cmac8893 11 років тому +1

    It wasn't really necessary to convert to moles haha. I used grams to solve: 79L x 50.0g/48L and got 82ish which is probably a little more accurate since the rounding with moles is skipped. It doesn't really matter I guess though. It's good mole conversion practice anyway haha XD

    I have just done my calculation without converting between mole and gram. I have got the same answer: 50g/48L= n/79L --> n = 82.29g. Tyler, can you please explain this? Thanks.

      It works without converting because they are the same gas (both O2, which means they have the same conversion factor between grams and moles). I can’t imagine a situation where it would be 100% necessary to convert unless you were doing a very complex problem with chemical reactions and gas changes.
